Commodus had everything he ever wanted and Maximus right were he needed him. His need to feel loved by everyone got him killed
It's ironic because he didn't do anything to gain respect or love from anyone.
One of the first scenes he appears in even shows this, at the end of the battle he speaks with a soldier who informs him of the victory and that "the wounded are still coming in", a good leader would inspire loyalty and love by speaking with and thanking the wounded for their service, which would've been typically done to inspire the men.
