@@finnzweitname5905 I hear you. Ironically, the U.S. and Canada were literally built by the railway and we used to have great rail networks as well as extensive tram networks in all major cities. After the war the emphasis was placed on highways, buses and air travel. Most passenger rail was slashed to the bone and virtually all tram networks were ripped out. Now we're stuck in endless gridlock and queuing for hours in shitty airports to get just about anywhere.
I'll use Berlin as an example as I am most familiar with that city. I added up all of the S, U, Tram, RE and RB lines including route length, number of vehicles, stations, lines etc. and Berlin alone (pop. approx 4 million) has more public transit than all Canadian cities COMBINED! If you take every rail transit line in every city in Canada - subway, LRT, tram, commuter train etc. - everything - put them all together in one city, Berlin still has about 20% more. And all of our commuter and inter-city trains are still diesel ffs!! Decades of severe underinvestment have lead to this sad state of affairs. I don't see us ever catching up especially given Berlin's continuing expansion of just about everything.

Yeah, they are in process of installing Wifi to all IC trains (even the old IC1 stock). Sadly the Bombatdier IC2s were commisioned back when DB still thought of Wifi on a Train as luxury only to be available on ICEs and only in 1st class either (luckily public pressure made them change their mind since then).
The Bombardier IC2s have LTE repeaters though, so you at least can rely on mobile data most of the time.

Some things to consider in my opinion: Yes, those trains don't deliver the same quality as some of the old IC and all ICEs in general but they have a really significant advantage: Lower cost. As a customer, i could get a ticket for the same ride for this friday (worst day of the week) for only 29 Euros in the morning. But also the lower cost enables DB to connect a lot of cities to the InterCity-network which didn't have an IC connection before.

My friend works for DB Fernverkehr (the operator and owner of these trains). He says the Twindexx trains have horrible reliability; they breakdown much more often than other ICE and Intercity trainsets. Another problem with the design is that whole train is designed like an EMU. So if there's a problem with one coach, they must take the whole set out of service, along with the engine. Or if there's a problem with the engine, all the coaches get taken out of service, too. They can't just uncouple the problem coach and swap in a working one.

Sounds like the IC4 and IC2 trains here in Denmark. They're DMU trains with a lovely interior and great design and comfort (made for intercity standards)... but they break down all the time. The IC2's (the 2-car versions) ended up being scrapped entirely, and the IC4 trains (same train but with four cars) only have half the fleet in service at any given time, so that there are backups available - and even then, they mostly run regional services, with most of the InterCity trains being operated by much older IC3 (rubber-nose) trains (which have thankfully been refurbished and are almost as comfortable, and far more reliable). The number is for the number of cars, not the chronological order of the trains.

Usually privatising companies works in favor of the consumer but in the case of railway (and other forms of public transportation) it has never worked that way. It is impossible for companies to really compete. Usually one company is allowed to provide service to a region/track but that way they are the only one to operate there. Then they can charge really high prices to increase profit, while (partial) state-owned companies are run in a way to serve the interest of the people more. On the other hand the focus on passenger service in Europe leads to the result, that most of the cargo is hauled on trucks.
Especially in Germany the percentage of cargo transported by rail is falling for decades. Now politics want to boost railcargo. But the fact is, the schedule is so tight, that there is almost no „space“ for cargo. The little amount of cargo that is shipped by rail can only be transported at night, so Cargo won’t interfere with passenger trains.

Much prefer the upper decks as downstairs always feels a bit claustrophobic, especially on the SNCF TGVs. Totally agree with your comment about being able to see towns and villages from a train. Much prefer to use rail rather than air whenever possible.

Firstly, let me say I really enjoy watching your travel reports. I'm from Alfreton in Derbyshire and I've travelled pretty extensively within the UK, so I can relate easily to some of the journeys you make, although not on the newer trains. My girlfriend comes from Osnabrück in North West Germany and when I've visited her, I've travelled on quite a few of the double decker trains like on this video, between Düsseldorf and Munster and I love them cos it's great to have a decent view from the top deck. They are always clean and much quieter than UK trains. I've also travelled on their ICE's as well, which are also lovely trains. Their rail system is great. Pity the UK ones aren't as good yet!
Looking forward to your next update.

Important note: At 9:33 you write one of your favourites about train travelling is seeing all these villages and towns. I agree. But in Germany we build these green noise protection walls everywhere. At 13:46 you see a couple being just built up. On a trip were a couple of years ago I could see lovely villages, the River Mosel, vineyards etc, all I see now is green walls, endless green walls for miles over miles. And it is in fact one reason why I use trains less these days.
    A couple more notes:
You were lucky your train was on time. Two years ago I used right that train and it arrived in Dortmund half an hour late. This made me miss my connection, the next train for this connection - an hourly service at that - was cancelled altogether, the connection after that then was again heavily delayed. I arrived in Dortmund half an hour late, departed 3hrs late! Similar happens about every time I use a long distance train. To Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) a few years ago the train had 4hrs delay, so I only saw the show for half a day despite a full day ticket. On the return trip again over 2 hours lateness and I missed the last train for the last 50kms, had to get someone to pick me up despite having paid the DB, never got my money back despite it being their fault I missed the connection. This again is a reason why I use trains ever rarer.
On the internet, ever more trains are equipped with wifi now, but I believe Germany is one of the worst countries in Europe for internet infrastructure, so despite most trains having wifi now you will find it is really slow with many interruptions.

There is another kind of IC 2, made of Stadler KISS EMU's wich DB bought from the WESTbahn from austria. They're far more comfortable.
They're excluive on the line Rostock - Berlin - Dresden.
One train per day goes between Berlin and Vienna with them over night.
You might want to check them out.

    • @timm1998
      @timm1998 3 года назад +1

I would disagree with that. I ride the KISS IC2 from Dresden to Berlin regularily and it has a number of disadvantages compared to the other version althoug it is still really good.
The availabilty of storage for larger luggage pieces is very limited especially on the upper deck. And on the lower deck it is only available in one spot so depending on my seating position it is hard to keep an eye on my luggage.
The seats are comporable although i prefer the ones from Bombardier.
I find the reclinde position on the Bombardier trains better than the KISS train.
The passenger information system is much superior on the Bombardier trains and I also prefer the Blue and Wood Accents on the IC2 from Bombardier compared to the one from Stadler.
It comes down to your preferences.

I think they are great, and D.B. have chosen the routes on which they operate very carefully, and where they consider a full ICE unit inappropriate. The routes they operate are very similar to our Cross Country routes, and just think how superior one of these IC2 trains would be on the run from Aberdeen to Penzance ! It is also ironic that D.B run our Cross Country franchise, and have done little if anything to improve the cramped and noisy Voyagers. All (rail) maintenance vehicles - no matter what purpose - are yellow in Germany.
As you could see even the excavator at Halle Hbf (on the neighbouring track) was yellow - even though it is not owned by DB ...
Aside from that I don´t think we´ll see any bar/refreshment service anytime soon on those IC2´s.
Covid has put a halt on that anyway but even when that is over I doubt we´re going to see a Bar service really.

For what this service is, I think the price matches it very well. I think I wouldn't mind using it.

Thanks for the inter-holiday extra post. As usual, I trolled through everyone else's comments before offering my own. I can't believe how anyone could complain about the comfort level of these trains. They're certainly more comfortable and better riding than some of the cattle class crap we have to put up with in Australia. I have a feeling that Bombardier have vastly improved upon the NSW Intercity design (now around 50 years old) and would love to see this type of comfort downunder. Perhaps the questionable reliability of the sets mentioned in the comments is the source of the complaints.
I have to agree that wasps are a certifiable pest fit only for total extermination. I have had the misfortune to go to court over one that came into my car through a dashboard air vent and caused me to temporarily lose control and roll downhill into a red light camera intersection with the resultant mayhem and expensive photo. Fortunately, the magistrate gave me the benefit of the doubt and declared the wasp guilty instead of me. Discovery of a nest near my rear garage gave me incentive to boil the kettle and pour the contents down the nest entry. Hope this episode gives you a chuckle or two.
Thank you ever so much for sharing your many rail trip experiences during this difficult year. They are a source of great joy for many who haven't been able to travel this year and I hope you continue to earn a comfortable living from producing and posting them. I do hope you and your family are keeping warm and safe in wintry Inverness and can sing a hearty Auld Lang Syne to the worst year in world history since World War 2. My home city of Melbourne is being prudent this year in not having fireworks at midnight, although that rival city to our northeast seems bent on having their show of pride from the "coathanger" (Sydney Harbour Bridge) even while banning people from seeing it live from the harbourside and continuing to have more cases of COVID. I hope it pours with torrential rain at 2359 up there to prove a point. Enough negativity from this grumpy old man! Looking forward to your first 2021 posting this weekend. Cheers from Michael.
