Amazing, even today after 40 seasons, participants didn't learn how to use flint! All of them maniacally beat the metal part to create spark totally ignoring the opposite, magnesium side. All you need to do is to scrape a little white metal (magnesium), collect it to small pile and then create spark to ignite magnesium first, then transfer flame into coconut husk. It should take 30 seconds max!
@Hal Jordan yeah, I did that many times. Just hitting the flintstone is not enough, 1 spark can't start a good fire, you need a rapid sequence of sparks for a good shot at starting a fire. Also if you slide the blade on the corners of magnesium bar, it allows for slightly larger magnesium flakes to fall off, making them last longer as they catch a spark, increasing the chance of the husk to catch on fire as well.
@@camocreator5542 Yes really, you put the blade perpendicular to the rod, push against it, and then push down the rod in one smooth motion. It sends a shower of sparks to wherever you point the rod. I usually rest the tip of the rod in my tinder so all the sparks land in it. A pro can light the tinder in a single stroke of the ferro rod

They always seem to use the flints wrong on this show, i'm watching through my fingers waiting for one of them to sink the knife in their hand. Seriously all they'd have to do is draw the flint back while keeping the knife still. This directs a shower of sparks to the magnesium (which they don't even really need since they have coconut husks). This comes from over 15 years of fire lighting experience. The ONLY reason a spark is this difficult with modern day flint, is incorrect technique. Even in the rain I've had better results than them.
Frann Di Fini i think sundra a bit underrated not saying she great but she should get some credit from starting ina tribe where she was almost out first 3 to 2 and then went to a swap having NO ONE in her old tribe at and have to start new and then voted the wrong way then she drench herself in the majority and made it to final 4 also she waa hoping she could have played with rebecca (someone who wasnt bad at game either) but she was out pre merge. I think she get a vote or 2 from rebecca and possibly Nate but she wasn't winning unless a final 2 of her and becky

I started to watch survivor because it was on Netflix, Lucky I can watch all other season on cbs. I only watch till season 3 years ago. in their defense they were having to use these GIANT knives. i do not know how much practice it would take me to be able to consistently make a fire with knives that big.
It sounds like you, with them aren’t doing it right. To start with the whole back part (grey) is magnesium. You scrap off those grey shavings (no spark) and make a pile of magnesium shavings. Then you use the striker plate. But you don’t chop it and dent the shit out of it, you put the blade perpendicular to the striker bar and you push with your thumb and slide sparks off it smoothly. When you don’t make the pile of magnesium, it’s hard to light a fire with just sparks. Then when you chop down on the striker bar, sure you get sparks but you dent the crap out of it and waste it. What they did is nowhere close. :)
These people really don't know how to use one of those ferro rods :( I spent 2 summers teaching scouts how to use them, you hold them down on the tinder, then push the knife against it with force, and THEN you push down producing a lot of sparks directly into the tinder. You don't just smack it
maybe they shouldve put the flint inside a small pile of coconut husks or atleast put the directly over the husks while pressing them with it but still this cracks me up every time lol
The Tess-Shocker they didn’t use the magnesium at all :). Your suppose to shave the back magnesium off into a little pile of grey shavings (highly flammable). To be fair, starting fire with flint is hard. I've tried it before, took me 20-30mins before a spark caught.
I do it all the time when I have a bonfire in the summer, and I don't find it that hard.
