She is so talented ... and smiling - her videos are a gift for everyone who likes Chopin's music. According to Chopin himself, this étude depicts the soul of his betrothed, Maria Wodzinska, and not a swarm of bees.
I'm in love with this piano sound. It sounds in a certain way old and from another time. Great! Not to mention your musical and technical niveau. Thanks for sharing this with us!!!
i love how people continue doubting lisitsa's tempo, when she CLEARLY informed people three times that the tempo marking is presto, as is Op. 10 No. 4.
And if someone came along who could play it twice as fast again would it be twice as good to listen to? With increasing speed their comes a point at which the music disappears. To me, perhaps not to others, but to me this performance is in places on the edge of disappearing.
i literally didnt want to play this song for my amus because i saw this and didn't think I could ever play that fast, but after a few months and a FANTASTIC teacher I could do this!! PHEW!! just have to not screw up in the exam
According to Harold Schonberg, Liszt could play the right hand of this piece in octaves at speed. Without breaking a sweat. He must have possessed incredible technique.
Valentina, we LOVE you playing. My son always try to listen to your recordings and compare his sound and touch with yours! I wish you could conduct Master Classes in US :-)
Rhinosaur nah, the difficult part is the polyrhythms... for each 2 notes played in rh, lh plays one note, but there is emphasis on every third note in the right hand.
Amazing, I'm learning to play this one, and yes to those of you who think this is too fast - it's not to fast, it's just right. If you want fast, listen to Pollini play this song ;)
@@bennywang5752 Speed & Accuracy can be learned by anyone, even a child, with practice. It takes maturity, understanding, and genuine effort to come to understand and properly play the music with the correct expression.
Though this Étude may be depicting the soul of Chopin's betrothed Mario Wodzinska, the fact that it's sometimes called "The Bees" is not a surprise. I never knew about its nickname until now and before now I was always reminded of bees when listening to this. This Étude reminded me of Rimsky Korsakov's "The Flight Of The Bumblebee" and still does. Valentina, you play this Étude very well! :)
ohh, okeyy...i was just asking because i'm working on chopin lately and the speed of this etude attracted me....thanks for the clarification...ur the best!
@Chopianist3 If your being serious then the answer (for me) lies in practicing the piece with two metranome settings, one for the right hand and one for the left, practiced seperately and then together using the different MM speeds.
you know what my favorite etude of op 25 its no 7. the melodie is just beautifull, and the dipness withing it is almost unatural. Valentina lisitsa and maurizio pollini have the best versions
@liszt85 When I started learning this, I practiced playing small snippets fast, even just half a bar at times, pretty soon you get the feel of it, and it comes. Good luck!
this etude should be played as fast ? ( just asking I used to play it but really really slower thx for answering .) All your videos are amazing you play so well can't find words for describe how you make us feel. thx for all that great music you made keep going it's amazing.
I wonder why Chopin marked only a few of his pieces with Presto. Pretty much all of the fast ones Chopin gave a ridiculously fast metronome marking. Btw, don't take any of my comments too too badly, You play wonderfully, some of the best Chopin playing I have ever heard. the critique is more of a mental excercise, a test of my musical understanding than a real critique.
@roturner I agree with you. The sheet music may say one thing, "Presto" as a tempo marking in this case. Yet, what would then be the point of all these pianists and artists and their interpretations and creations of music if they all strived for the same, original thought that Chopin had?
Personally I do not know this etude any slower. It is (as V notes) marked presto and it is a study for precision and speed in the right hand playing lots of notes close together. What VL dioes wonderfully is control it even at that tempo. It is fast, but doesn't sound rushed to my ears. That is the trick.
*For everyone who's learning this and your hands hurt or get tired after a while:* You're tensing up. Try playing slower (waaaay slower) and make sure you relax your hands and arms all the way to the shoulders. You can shake your hand after each note, or just be really aware. Good luck!

I've listened to this video now a few times. As a professionel organbuilder and audio engineer I think that the piano is deliberately (is this the right word?) not 100% in tune (in each key itself), which makes the sound a little bit more "wide" and soft. It is hard to tell because of the minor quality on youtube. I love this sound, and when I have to buy a grand piano in the future, I will have a closer look at Bösendorfer.
@AmShagar in sheet music, most of the times it says what tempo it should be played, so with your metronome, you can find it out exaactly! I thought this one was 120 for the half note, so 6 notes of the right hand.
@ValentinaLisitsa You're right if a song says "Presto" (which, for any others who may not know what that means, means basically as fast as possible) you should PLAY it Presto! Although in PianoPhase345's defense, it did sound like you were playing it Prestissimo! Wow! AnAmericanComposer {{{EVN07}}}
@mpzstudio ah, but you see, not all music tries to communicate a message, some music is just to mimic a situation or paint a picture. So, yes chopin's Op 25 no 2 should be played fast because its not a piece that speaks about bees, its a piece that expresses their nature (blindingly fast and erratic!). I don't see how this piece will remind anyone of a swarm of bees if its played at any speed lower than this.
songs like this are very simple to do. All you have to do is nail down your scales and be able to do it at a slow pace. Then you just make it faster and bam
Anyway, its a Chopin ETUDE, and its marked "Presto". She's playing it @ the average speed it should be played.. don't get me wrong, she chould play it even faster if she wanted to.
I came to think of "Fantasie Impromptu", when I heard/saw you playing this etude a week ago; it has been one of my favourites since childhood 60 years ago. Have you done that one too on RUclips?
I would say that playing faster is harder because of the technical skill that is needed to play at such a speed. However, I think playing slower is more difficult because it is harder to connect the different parts of the piece as a whole. It's harder to get that flow and that "connected" feeling. Even if you have your technique down, it doesn't mean that musical expression or emotion is automatically there. It's something I think that you already have and cannot learn. Loool just my opinion ^^^^^
@mpzstudio Music critics always try to make it appear as though speed has no place in music. The piece is meant to move fast. Pardon me if my mind does not think "slow and moderate" when playing a piece to mimic the antics of bees.
Good phrase-"bumble bee style". I doubt if it sounds good at my speed-0 miles per hour, possibly because I don't know it. I think my real problem with this pianist is lack of dynamics and a tendency to sound somewhat robotic.
