@@joejojo5966 good question, you'd need to compare them side by side. The Sigma will probably be sharper across the frame BUT the Fujifilm has the aperture ring and 1.2 boast-factor! I'd be happy with either, but the aesthetic would play a big role. Try to compare portrait samples from both,
It's great that the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 performs so well on high-resolution sensors! It’s truly an excellent lens for portraits - the sharpness and bokeh effects can be really impressive with this many megapixels.
Great review - thanks. I would love to see a comparision with the Fuji 50mm F2 - I think that price-wise most people are likely to be considering that against the Sigma lens, rather than the 56mm 1.2.
The fact that the Sigma competes well against the 56 instead should speak volumes. Particularly because it gathers twice the light of the 50 f2 in a similar form factor. Quite frankly, the Sigma 56 is the best third party prime lens for Fuji along with the Viltrox 13 and 75.
Very interesting. This Sigma looks like the most competitive so far. I wonder how different it is from the XF f2 one, especially if their size and weight is similar.
Would take the sigma over the viltrox any day. Tried the 23 viltrox and felt that CA and quality control may not be on par as sigma or fuji. The sigma 56 1.4 has gotten rave reviews online and I cant wait to pickup mine. It is a great balance between quality and price without any major compromises. I am shooting an x-s10 so the missing aperture ring is not as a big deal to me.
For portrait work the aperture ring, and focus speed are not important as changes are not often needed to be made quickly. (in my opinion) The Sigma 56 is definitely the most interesting out of the trio released Priced in the UK cheaper than the Fuji 50 F/2 and less than half the price of the 56 F/1.2, it makes the Fuji 56 F/1.2 a hard sell However if Fuji do update the 56 F/1.2 as rumoured this year with the newer faster focusing motors, and the weather sealing, whilst maintaining the current selling price, it may see some great deals on the original 56 F/1.2, or add another thought to the purchase. But if I was buying now, I would get the sigma, the aperture ring and the F/1.2 over F/1.4 is not worth £400+ I'd love to see the Sigma 56 v the Fuji 50 F/2, if the sigma is better at F/2 (1 stop closed) than the Fuji is wide open
Thanks for the review! Glad to see Sigma lenses coming to the Fuji system. Regarding video autofocus, I wonder if playing with the autofocus settings would improve the performance?
Love the optics, AF for photos is good enough, but man this may be the worst video eye-tracking lens for Fuji. Worse than the XF35 f1.4 and XF27 F2.8. If anyone has a continuous setting they can recommend let me know!
In Taiwan I can find a used XF56 (easily) for about $500 to $550 usd, or a new Sigma 56 will cost about $440. I used to own a Sigma one on my Sony a6000, later I switch to fuji system and sold it, really missed that kind of depth of field. tho the XF50 f2.0 (I once borrowed from my friend) had a magical texture on the metal in the image. I will still love to have 1.4(or 1.2) for sometimes, now it's time to decide......
Thanks for the video Gordon. Did you have chance to test the newer version of Fujifilm 56mm f1.2 R WR? Do you think if you made this comparison between Sigma 56mm and the Mark II version of Fujifilm 56mm f1.2 the delivered results and the conclusion would be the same? Or if the newer version of Fujifilm 56mm f1.2 R WR would perform noticeably better? By the way, I wish Fuji made this new version with lineer motor AF system as they made on the never version of 23mm and 33mm.
The lack of aperture ring was already a downer, but the terrible autofocus makes it useless for pros and people with older bodies. Very close to buying a Sony A6400 for this lens and one or two of the other Sigmas. The Sigma absolutely kills the Viltrox by the way. The latter has far too much CA and is far less sharp. Hence Sony being my first thought instead of the future Fuji 56mm mk II, which will probably be over $1000 and muvh bigger imho.
Can you PLEASE explain me why the lens is resposible for this autofocus on eyes ?... In the times i did photography, that was the persons fault using the camera...
Great review. I own the Fuji 56 1.2 and get annoyed I can’t get close enough for portraits AND it’s supposed to be a portrait lens ! Seeing your review I prefer the slightly closer focussing distance of the Sigma and definitely prefer the Sigma’s smoother out of focus highlights when stopped down a stop. Currently I only use my Fuji 56 1.2 fully open at 1.2 because the out of focus highlights go hexagonal if I stop down. Sigma here I come!! Thanks again.
The choice of lenses by Sigma seems a bit odd considering the market saturation at those lengths. This may sound a bit conspiratorial, but I’m wondering whether Sigma agreed with Fuji not to release their 150-600 before Fuji did theirs?
@S Tra As the only option at that range for sports and wildlife, an area of photography that Fuji”s new flagship is aimed at, then yes. So put your eyes back in sweetness.
@S Tra But yes it’s aimed for video too, the fast processor and object detect with 40fps and the lenses it was launched with for hybrid use aren’t by accident. But yes sigma knew, we all knew the 150-600 was due this year, it was on Fuji’s lens roadmap.
@S Tra It was really the fact that the lenses sigma chose to release have already a number of other choices, both from Fuji and other makes at those focal lengths. A 150-600 had no competition at the time, but the potential Fuji version was known about since August last year, as well as the xh1 replacement for some time.
Apart from, maybe the much older, however Leica lens do not date by design!, the exellent value for money Sigma offerings are very, very difficult to go past.
Its mostly these two lenses that are especially slow on fuji. 56 f1.2 is regarded as one of the slowest focusing fuji lenses. Sigma definitely matches that slowness.

The Sigma is surprisingly good! But a comparison with the XF 50mm f2 and Viltrox 56mm f1.4 would be greatly appreciated!
that indeed would be the most relevant comparison as they're in a similar cost bracket
Yes. Please compare the Sigma 56 to the Fuji 50 f2.0
Curious defiance of expectations to find Fuji having the cross-field acuity advantage and Sigma having the colour & rendering advantage.
I have managed to get a nearly new Sigma at a third of the price of a new Fuji. I found that I could live without the aperture ring.
Agree about the need for a comparison with the Fuji 50mm f2!
Would love to see a comparison to the Fuji 50mm F2 as they are identical price and I'm trying to decide which one to get.
I just picked up the Sigma 56mm and what an excellent value! I'm very surprised at the sharpness for a lens half the price of Fuji.

@@cameralabs he is asking you.
Shame that sigma didn't try to match the f1.2 aperture which is the appealing aspect of the 56 f1.2 rather than making a budget version.
Have you watched the video? Do you see much benefit to the 1.2 of the Fujifilm?
fuji x sensor's crop factor is 1.52. so, do the math...
It can actually vary between different generation sensors which is why Fujifilm describes it as being approximately 1.5x.
