  • How to do a loft conversion when you have a semi-detached home in the UK with a Hipped Roof? Is a hip to gable conversion the best option or is there a better alternative.

Thanks. That's a solution I hadn't considered and I agree a straight gable end on a fully hipped roof is a bit ugly

Amazing videos! Would you be able to do a video on how sinking steels for dormer work? With reverse firrings to add height?

Great to see you back on youTube and great ideas for those Hip roofs. Shame the number of typically semis that have been messed up with poor looking conversions.

I live on a close of bungalows and the number of people who have done loft conversions and just turned the roofs into these long, rectangular structures is infuriating. No slope left at all. I know it provides maximum space, but it completely ruins the look of the properties.

Very informative, thank you for the explanation. What software do you use for the 3D model?

Thank you Robin, great video. Wouldn't the hip taken out and a dormer roof at the back of the house create more room?

Hi Michael. Yes, creating a gable end and then a rear dormer is the usual "hip to gable" treatment, and provides the most room.

Good idea, as I'm keen on astetics.
What I feel is missing is any mention on whether this changes likelyhood for planning permission?
We were considering hip-to-gabel with dormer across back but your video makes me wonder. However I'm not sure what the view from a planning officer perspective would be. i.e. Have you posted this video after goign through a journey for this one?
Also, more just our own case is that we were seeing the hip-to-gabel as an oportunity to get some good solar on the front big square area. Lots to consider...hmmm

Yes I should have mentioned planning. You would need planning if you go for a new gable or dormer on the front elevation.

Hi Robin I got exactly the same thing converting hip roof to gable, the gable and wall is all ready build up and with the new ridge to the existing ridge, so my question is if a start take out the existing hip rafter, and start build the new rafters all way to the gable end, the neighbour house roof wich is hip roof is not push it away my side? Is semmidtouch house. May I have some help please thank you

Yes it's possible that the weight of their tiles will push against your gable and make it unstable. Needs to be looked at by a structural engineer. geni.us/loftsurvey

Lateral support for roof to gable solid brick wall can’t find it anywhere can you give us a idea,3rafters and attach to wall it don’t make any kind of sense 1 brick to hold the roof down don’t think so.

Both leaves of the cavity wall would be built up into a gable. Then rafters strapped as per building regulations.

@@RobindeJongh Building regulations only show cavity walls, solid brick walls can’t find them anywhere.Gable wall strap to rafters Robin cheers for your time.
