      beautiful boat, but sailing it directly down wind like that is far from optimum, goose winging a nice cat is almost criminal.

    I have a plan on getting a catamaran I first thought monohaul but switched my mind I was discouraged a bit when i could not find proper info about if a catamaran could sail across the Atlantic so thank you.

      +Distant Shores TV how did you repair the chip on the bow?

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  7 лет назад +1

      Yes I put a layer over gelcoat on it to seal it until someone could do a better job and fair it in. tricky since it was so close to the waterline.

      Yes, we enjoy having people on board and really enjoyed running our Sail Away Weeks pre-COVID19, which were sail training opportunities, basically onboard versions of our boat show workshops. Unfortunately with COVID19 restrictions we are not going to be offering these, at least not in the near future.

    Did you fix the chip on the starboard hull?
    What to you have in the produce wash, Just water?

    • @sherylshard9616
      @sherylshard9616 7 лет назад +4

      Thanks for your kind words. Yes Paul patched the gel coat chip which was tricky since it was right near the water line. Yes this time I used just water. In the past I have used a mild bleach wash - a capful or 2 of bleach to a bucket of water but Alexandra and I bought most of the produce for this voyage in large modern grocery stores so felt it had already been treated. In a third world country or if we had bought stuff in an open market I would definitely use a chemical wash of some kind.

    Discovery makes quality vessels and so I was surprised by the lack of workmanship on those escape hatch locking handles. Hopefully the company will instruct the employees on their proper installation procedure. Those Cats are nice but I'd be quite satisfied , make that happy with Discovery's new Southerly 48 or the 54 :).

    When you did the maintenance on the water-maker did you really wait until after you set off on the big sail before giving it a first test run? Whenever i went for a long sail i always did a stem to stern check that the boat is up for it, finding that loose porthole latch after you set sail kind of left me scratching my head.

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  7 лет назад

      We did our best with the new boat going over as much as we could before setting off. We knew we would need to change the pre-filter on the watermaker while underway since we would be using it 2 hours a day for up to 3 weeks. I do not like to run a watermaker in harbour even to test since harbour water is not good for them. A remarkably small number of things went wrong considering she was a new boat.

    Great to watch the voyage begin.
    What caused the chip on the bow?

    • @sherylshard9616
      @sherylshard9616 7 лет назад

      We’re not sure, John. We noticed it when we arrived from the airport. Some sort of floating debris must have hit the bow at sea when the first crew sailed the boat down from England. It was right at the waterline which made it hard for Paul to patch since there was some surge and lots of wakes in the harbour.

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  7 лет назад

      So far our main experience has been this crossing. So... 3000 miles downwind and on the beam. After the first learning experience we had no trouble with this Selden system. We will definitely report back on the new boat (which IS having the same Selden In-Mast system)

    Lot's of Q's. Should I save all these for a live chat? 1) How did you nick the bow and how was it repaired? 2) Boat walkthrough planned for future video? 3) Will Discovery being showing a BW 50 at the Miami show in February or the Annapolis show in October? 4) Besides the windlass, chain locker, anchor(s), what's in the big nose of the nacelle? 5) Is Dan available as a chef for hire on crewed charters?

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  7 лет назад

      We might do a live chat... good idea! 1) the delivery crew must have hit a floating object on the way from UK - I repaired it with matched gelcoat as a temporary fix. 2) Yes just working on the next videos now 3) not sure 4) this it I think 5) perhaps :-)

    So night shift always has at least one person, right? Course correction, rogue waves, squalls... all bad news. If anyone sails a solo voyage in smaller vessels do they drop anchor when sleeping?

    • @alanjm1234
      @alanjm1234 6 лет назад +1

      Can't drop anchor in 1000s of metres of water.
      Single handers usually try to sleep in 10 to 15 minute increments, taking a look around in between.

    I see that there is a solar-powered catamaran that can travel unlimited distance at 5 knots and run the AC as well
    I take it sailing you're not going much faster than 5 yachts and I don't know how much fuel you'll burn running the AC

    What is with the solemn, melancholy music at the beginning of the video? I mean really, when you get to take a trip like this, you should be thrilled!!! Do you realize that less than 1% of 1% of 1% of 1% of 1% of people anywhere who step on a boat of any kind ever get the opportunity to do what you have done here? If you are going to make videos, at least put some "life" into the music you use for it. Otherwise, maybe you should specialize in videos of funerals instead.
