DP/30 @TIFF: The Imitation Game, Cumberbatch & Knightley

  • Alan Turing died in 1954 at 41 years of age, just 2 years after being prosecuted by the state for being gay. But that was the tragic end of a remarkable life. Much of his work in WW2 was classified by the British government until recently. Still, he has long had a following as the conceptual parent of the computer. The Imitation Game focuses on the war years. Turing is played by Benedict Cumberbatch & his closest ally, Joan Clarke, is played by Keira Knightley. The actors chatted with David Poland under duress of hunger in this DP/30 interview.

As someone, now 91 y/o, with a wrongful conviction for Gross Indecency I watched the film “Imitation game” last night in tears. This will do as much for the ACCEPTANCE of homosexuality as did gay marriage. THANK YOU SO MUCH Graham Moore, Andrew Hodges & the brilliant actor, Benedict Cumberbatch. from George Montague, author of “The Oldest Gay In The Village” (Brighton, UK)

Hello all - I made an adjustment on the title card that is not very attractive, but does spell Ms. Knightley's name correctly. It is hard to make the adjustment on RUclips and with the wild popularity of this interview today, I didn't want to pull this down and put another interview up. So this is my best solution. Thanks for your participation.

***** Look. I have been doing this a long time. This may be the first you have ever seen or heard of me, but I have done over 1100 of these interviews. Lots of Oscar winners and the like. And a key to getting the access I get to do my work has been that the talent feels good about the experience after we have done it. There are a couple of exceptions. In one case, RUclips commenters insisted for a year that I had insulted an actor and when he and I met again, he thought I was kidding when I told him about the complaints. Of the 1300-plus people who I have shot for this show, I am pretty sure I can count the disgruntled on one hand... maybe both hands, at worst. So I am sorry that you were so offended. But I have enormous respect for Keira and her work and your presumption that I feel or behaved otherwise is offensive to me. But what you believe is what you believe. I will make sure to address it when I next interview Keira. Thanks for watching.

      @hannah11pell 9 лет назад +6

      0306babylove
He's done mostly supporting roles in movies until now, so character actor is fair. A lot of great actors are character actors. After Imitation Game, if he primarily plays lead roles, then he'll be a leading man. But it doesn't matter as long as he gets great parts, though I suppose I'd rather have him primarily do lead roles since we get more of him that way. Or follow the Cate Blanchett model of mixing lead roles with great supporting ones.
Agreed, jeca--Keira Knightley is very underrated, though everyone seems to love her in her films this year, so maybe that's changed. She's a great actress.

    • @RandomPlayIist

0306babylove I'd say he's still considered a character actor, not quite leading man material just yet. He'll have to get a few more successful films under his belt where he's the lead, especially if it involves action or romance.

I've just watched a load of videos of Knightley - I feel like I've tracked back a whole decade. It's interesting to see that when she started she's exactly like how she is in this video, but as the years passed and progressed I suppose she was more secretive, straight to the point, and less charming - I guess due to her fame. It's great to see that recently she's back to the laid calm attitude and I suppose this also has to do with the media no longer scrutinizing her. Just a weird observation of the difference I suppose. She always knows her shit though which is a good thing.

Very nice and intelligent interview :) ... However there is a spelling mistake in Keira Knightley's name when the photograph pops up. (0:45)

adris432 So sorry. Thank you for pointing it out. The font and changing letters distracted my eye. I am trying to figure out how to fix. Reposting on RUclips can be complicated. Working on it. Thanks again.

Interviewer: You Look a little worn out.
Benedict: That's not a nice thing to say to one of most beautiful women on the planet.
    Keira: Yeah, Fuck You!
    LOL HAHAHA

I am shocked. I was expecting another mindless interview but was greeted by a very intelligent discussion instead. Wow

Huge fan of Turing, so many modern patterns and schools of thought in Computer Science come from him. However, to call him the "conceptual parent of the computer" negates many of the huge contributions by people like Babbage, Lovelace, Pascal... Some of whom were theorizing (and making!) computers _hundreds_ of years before Turing's birth.
CS is a huge field, and no one man or woman can be revered as any sort of single parent of computing. Nor should they be, it's a rich and fascinating history!

The interviewer actualy seems like a nice guy if you ignorant assholes watch the rest of the video. He obviously just was trying to start some casual conversation with the actors to make them feel more comfortable about starting the interview and obviously what came out of his mouth was a complete mistake so leave the man alone. Fantastic casual interesting type of interview. Loved it :D

I always find this interesting. Here in Korea, saying that ‘you look tired’ is more about showing that you care about that person and hoping he or she would have time to take care of him/herself.(plus, everybody in Korea IS tired)
