  • Many people have heard of the Catskills of New York. Many have probably heard that it was home to several resorts. What many may not know is that nearly all of those resorts are now abandoned. Leading this series off is Grossingers Resort, which was one of the leading ones in the area. Now currently being demolished, we give you one last one and the once famous and prominent resort. Enjoy
Please Note: Exploring Abandoned locations can be dangerous. I don't condone or encourage anyone to enter an Abandoned structure. Not only is safety a concern, but often times its illegal and when possible, i seek out permission. I simply go to document its history before it's gone and leave things the way I find them. I assume all the risks & responsibility in doing so. Please don't attempt to do this on your own.

One thing i forgot to mention in the video is that the resort in the movie "Dirty Dancing" was based off this actual resort.

      Where is the real Kellerman's?
The fictional resort of the film, Kellerman's, is inspired by Grossinger's, the long-gone Catskill destination, but the movie was actually shot at two locations hundreds of miles south, at Mountain Lake Lodge in southwest Virginia and Lake Lure in western North Carolina.

I worked there in late 1984 until it was sold in 1986. I worked at the front desk. The staff lived on the property in an older part away from the main area, I remember walking down the path to the hotel. It was truly beautiful, the hallway that went past the florist was lined with signed photos of all the stars that either stayed there or performed there. Yes there was a few times doing room checks I would get lost and have to use a guest phone in the hallways to call down to the desk to find my way back. Great memories!

My family and I stayed at this resort shortly before the resort closed, for a conference that my dad was attending. I was 14 at the time. I vividly remember swimming in that tremendous indoor pool. It was awesome! It’s a bit hazy now, but I think that red and white striped area contained a soda/ice cream fountain shop. I remember having an “egg cream” drink there. I don’t remember a roller skating area there, but it is possible there were 2 areas like that, or perhaps the skating area was closed by then.we stayed during winter, so we didn’t see the outside pool, unfortunately, but I do remember walking through some underground tunnels to access different buildings/areas of the resort. I remember eating in a huge banquet room and being served several courses for dinner. I don’t remember the hotel rooms very well, but I think we were in a more modern part of the hotel, and I think we were in a tall building. It’s a shame that these places all closed and were/are being torn down.

Phenomenal coverage of some of the iconic places in the Catskills. I hated to hear about each one as it closed.
I spent a weekend at Grossingers once and as we were checking in, the woman at the desk made me show ID because everyone I was with was Jewish, as was most of the clientele, and I am Christian (last name is McCarthy) and she just couldn’t seem to wrap her head around that 😆.
We had a small place within about 15 minutes of all of these places. How sad that they’re all gone! Thank you so much for the coverage! Fantastic work! Love all of your videos! Getting to be a binge watcher of your work... and I don’t do that!

Thank you for sharing this video. I came across it during my research into the great Rocky Marciano of whom I am a huge fan as I believe he was the greatest fighter of all times. I know that it was here at Grossinger's where his trainer Charley Goldman isolated him to train in the airport hangar during his fighting days. I was astonished at the vast scale of the resort and can only try and imagine the activity there during the days when it was in full swing and I am sure you must have experienced that feeling while making the video. Thanks again and hello from Ireland

Thank you. I have enjoyed watching videos on youtube posted by you and other explorers of abandoned places. What strikes me is a sadness sometimes . These once opulent places are in different states of disrepair and decay. Nature is reclaiming these places. I am reminded of the sobering truth that moth and rust do indeed corrupt and thieves do break in and steal ...and graffiti is everywhere over everything. Things once worth millions are worth nothing now. All we have are photos and in some cases, memories. I appreciate being forced to think about what is really important. Where is my treasure? Where is my heart?

I read somewhere that it takes nature 100 years to return whatever man has built and abandoned, back to pure nature again. But nature will, indeed, reclaim these lands. Documenting the HISTORY like this is so important!

My husband was a correction officer at the prison in Woodbourne not far from Liberty. As a second job he worked at Grossingers as did many of the officers. My husband was Jennie's personal assistant. He drove her wherever she needed to go, shopping etc. She was very generous to her employees including my husband and children. My 2 kids learned to ski there and my daughter had her 8th birthday party there in Feb of 1970, held at the indoor pool..We all loved her, she was a sweet woman and I have many memories of being at the hotel

This place was huge. Those pools. Wow. I really wished the roller skating rink wasn't damaged so much. Would have loved to have seen that better. Safety first. I'm fascinated with roller skating culture especially from the 70s. I was reading up on Sanford and Son and didn't know that Redd Foxx and "Bubba" performed (one of the few Black comedians to do so) at the Catskill resorts back in the day. Then I got to reading about the old resorts and planned to look up videos on them but haven't had a chance. And I love abandoned places and things already. But yesterday I was watching Dirty Dancing for the 100th time and remembered that it took place in the Catskills and I came on RUclips and searched "abandoned Catskill" and this video came up first. Watched and loved it! I love when abandoned videos insert old news or footage or photos from their heyday and then we get to see what it looks likes now. Thank you for that. Subscribed.

This whole thing is tripping me out. I have never seen or heard of this place before. Until yesterday I saw a picture of it on a website about abandoned places. My heart skipped a beat. I was here in an extremely vivid dream like 5 years ago. It was almost exactly like the picture I saw right down to the old white and orange pool chair and the small amount of dirty water in the bottom. The only difference was my dream had no graffiti and the wall beams were more concrete looking. Other than that I was almost exactly the same and now I am freaked out

Also you guys missed out! There were some untouched rooms in a diff wing. Aside from some dust the rooms remained intact, even found a suitcase and shoes in the one room as if they went out for a walk and never came back. The rooms were in such great condition for so long (some of them), that when I was exploring most recently 5-7 years ago, the rooms still looked like the ads for the hotel. Everything was still in place. It was crazy.

Great video. Recent subscriber and really enjoyed this one. What a beautiful place it was at one time. To see it now is truly sad. Love that era when the Catskills and the Poconos were the place to be in the summer. Was before my time but I heard a lot of stories about the famous entertainers that performed in those resorts. And all the great activities they offered. Keep the great videos coming but be safe out there. Those floors were scary!!

Hello again. How sad to see. But to think all those people who stayed there having a wonderful time socialising. Plenty of space to sit by that wow sized pool indoors also out..Your standing by and in the area really gave it's dimensions. Glad you recorded what you did because as you said within a few years it's going to be gone for good when no-one can find it when new buildings are in place. Thankyou for sharing..good idea to use a drone giving a full view of the area in size.. Stay safe bev stone UK.

What an amazing place! Everything was huge the pool, the front lobby, the rooms “what’s left of them” -it must’ve been beautiful in it’s hey day . I am not sure were any movies made at that facility? Thank you for another awesome video 😁

Thanks to you both for posting this video of Grossinger's and preserving history on film. That's probably the most complete look we'll get before the demolition starts. I believe it might have already began from what I heard. I found out about the resort through Joe Lehman's website and FB group. It reminds me of the Riviera here in Las Vegas which was imploded two years ago. I am fascinated by Mid-Century history and urban exploration. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos in the future. :-)

Glad you enjoyed it and understand that this is preserving history. Half of this place is already gone. I stayed in the Riviera 25yrs ago with my family. Wish i was filming back then lol.

One word to describe this place...MASSIVE!!!! Geez it was it's own little town!!! I loved the playful tiles on the walls, especially the one with the smaller tiles. It is such a shame that someone didn't keep up the property & the business. Just think, you and Mike walked where famous people walked. It was a bit eerie and I bet if you have your monitor with you, it would have went off in several places.
Thank you for sharing!!! YOUR videos are grade A #1!!!! ✌🏼

Very well done. I recently posted a video on all the Dirty Dancing filming locations, which is what brought me to your video as I learned the resort in the movie was based off of this location. I liked the way you gave the walkthrough and then gave the aerial views with the drone. You gave a really nice look of what it’s like there. Thanks for doing this video.

Seen this abandoned pool b4, abandoned pools fascinate me, those lounge chairs are so cool, older than dirt, who was the last person to use the diving board, swim in, stuff like that fascinates me!

Thanks for documenting this. It was quite heartbreaking for me. As a young kid that spent the summers in the Catskills at small hotels and bungalows of families of middle class income. Grossingers was known in the area for great shows, comedians and stars, and great food. My mom had the Jenny Grossinger's cookbook that i inherited. . I loved to play punchball (like baseball with no bat and a soft pink ball) with the other young girls...this was the 50's. We challenged all the hotels in the area to play with us. Grossinger's camp accepted. We couldn't believe how snazzy Grossinger's was when we went to play them and were so excited when they offered us dessert afterwards. . So sad to see it in such a decrepit state.
