I use to go there every summer in the early 70's until the early 80's.... what wonderful times those were..... all the great entertainers, the dancing, the food etc.... it was glorious being there.... now there are the memories..... and it's so sad to see it abandoned like this.... such a majestic place with a horrible end.... makes me want to cry for the loss of a beautiful and grand place. Also went to the Concord (which was larger than Grossinger's) and is now defunct also. Only the memories are left.
+Misha Sandro My Uncle worked there and my Dad was a bellhop in the 1950's in the summer. A very strong connection to my family. Very sad that it ended this way.
The memories I have from there are unforgettable. My funniest being, my friend and I swimming down to the window in the deep end, making funny faces at the folks looking into the pool.
This is too heartbreaking to watch . Like many of you I visited the great Grossinger’s long ago and my memories are crystal clear of her beauty so seeing her in such a state is quite sobering.
Worked there 30 years ago in the mid seventies as a night auditor. Owners were great to work for. So sad to see it like this. Best job I ever had. It was my first out of college.
As a child growing up in Brooklyn, NY I spent many a summer at this resort with my family. Your images and the music was so bitter sweet. Grossinger's was a special get away that brought happiness to so many. It's so sad to see that it is now nothing but a decaying mass.
I have families that still live in Liberty and Monticello. I was just there in March visiting. (2015)My aunt was just talking to me about the Grossingers hotel. I use to baby sit in the early 70's and took swimming lessons in the indoor pool... Those were the days.... Many beautiful memories!!!!! I now live in Orlando..
I grew up in the Catskills and when I was a kid I hated it! The only time there was anything to do was in the summers when the people from the city would come up for the summers there are a lot more hotels with history in those mountains even a castle that my grandfather help build just outside my home town if Roscoe as I get older now and living in sw fla I miss those mountains sometimes!😢 it truly is a shame to go home and see just how much things have changed! I’ve been all over the world and truly have to say there is something Magical about those mountains I use to live in
The song is "Lady of dreams" by the band Vast. A fantastic video indeed. Great photography, with a mind grabbing track. "Artistically coordinated to bring the spirit and sense of demise through your soul and back." Matt A.
This is so sad. Grossingers was such a lovely place. I remember as a kid going to the barrel jumping each winter with my family. Also going downstairs and watching the people swimming in the pool. The youth group from church use to go there and swim each winter also.
Poignant! Very nicely done. Your video underscores the futility of trying to hold on to anything "forever." The juxtaposition of past and present is particularly well done. Thanks for the great work!
Your video truly does this old resort justice; you are a great artist; your eye for detail is very sharp, I recently stumbled across your video's because I love to watch urban exploration, it's clear to me now, that the others are just trying to copy your work, they don't even come close.
Wow, beautiful! The indoor swimming pool design was ahead of it's time. That could pass as a contemporary interior if it was still in working order. Love the music and photography too :).
I just recently started reading up about the “borscht belt” after hearing about it on a Seinfeld documentary. I live in West Virginia and had no clue about the Catskills. I have found it VERY interesting and sad that something so wonderful and successful is now gone. The Catskills sounds like it was amazing! And the history and culture goes to show just what can be accomplished in America! I just wish I could go back in time and witness just one day of the food, entertainment, and the feel of being family to everyone.
I discovered this song because of you, must be going on four years ago now. for that I thank you with the most sincere and heartfelt gratitude. that you accompany this waltz with some of the most poignant imagery to be found on the web is hella bonus doe
Walter, you did such an amazing job photographing the VASTness of the property, I return to view this regularly. 4 years ago I referred to this piece as my aural and visual crack and still feel the same. You have virgin photographs, prior to the ugly vandalization and tagging that took place. How sad to think this beautiful icon no longer stands. Be well. -Suzanne
Thank you for this video; it was well done & brought back many memories. While I was in college, I had a summer job in their dining room. It was a plum of a job, because the tips were the best. They also had 2 kitchens, since they served Kosher food. It's so sad viewing time's effects on the resort industry in the Catskills.
Being in my late forties and having spent the 1979-80 school year in Liberty, I'm just old enough to remember the tail end of the town's prosperity. My brother and I learned how to ice skate at Grossingers, and we look back fondly on being taken shopping at Sullivan's. It saddens me to see Liberty in such a prolonged state of decline, and that nobody was able to come up with a plan to keep Grossingers viable.
I was at Grossingers in 1981 to see the Eddie Fisher show. It is so sad to see the way this lovely hotel looks now. I remember the photos hanging on the wall in the lobby of all the famous people who came to Grossingers. I have seen photos where Eddie Fisher blew up the Playhouse. It must have brought back some wonderful memories to Eddie at the time.
Went there July 1962, my Pastor Jerry Cardo knewa Mrs. Grossinger, I was blown away, Golf Course was a monster killed me and my dad.Was forced to dance with somebody's grandmother.Lots of stuck up wealthy teenagers from Westchester County.
My parents, sister and brother went here in late 70's, maybe very early 80's. My Dad is a magician and the resort paid for all of us to come up for I think it was like 5 or 6 days, very nice place in its heyday. He did shows there and we had a blast. I was 12 or 13 at the time, now I am 46. It is so sad to see this place in ruins. maybe they could renovate and turn it into housing?
my grandfather bought a place right outside of liberty (white sulphur springs) in 1962....i have been going up there since im a baby and i still go there now...i was there 2 weeks ago....its very sad to see what liberty and sullivan county has turned into...i wasnt around in the 70's as im to yung but i remember the 80's and 90's when it was a place people wanted to go....i still love it there because we have 30 acres and i enjoy peace and quiet...but there is absolutely nothing around anymore, main street is boarded up and every businees is suffering ..almost every house is for sale and its very poor.....taxes are extremely high compared to surrounding counties and all the old timers are gone...main street is full of shady lookin people up to no good......i usually go to jeffersonville or livingston manor to shop....its very sad to see Grossingers this way....last i heard they turned it into a golf course
I have seen many videos of abandoned places but what gets me is when a place is abandoned, all the things left behind like the furniture and decorations. Most is trash by now but a few items could be worth a lot of money if it is cleaned up.
For a musician like me, the instrumental music is an especially poignant accompaniment for this sensitive, brief documentary. I was privileged to perform at the Concord which remained open a few years longer than Grossinger's. Thanks for your work. Also, thanks to Geoff B for his explanation of why the upstate NY resorts clolsed.
I've been obsessed with the abandoned catskill's resorts for about 3 years now, mostly Grossinger's and the Pine's, but unfortunately I live in Indiana and I still haven't made a trip. These places seem more or less like a fantasy to me now, I couldn't even imagine going. I WILL make a trip someday.
Hi, thats a really good video and sad. I grew up and live in the catskills and there are so many of these places just falling into decay it's a shame. This used to be THE place for people to come with there family on vacation. There's still a few of the catskill resorts left tho. I work at the one that was called "The Granit" but they renamed it now. Some of the people i work with used to work at grossingers, and the other big resorts. All abandoned now. They have great stories to tell.
Grossinger's was definitely among the grande dames of that area, along with the Concord and Kutsher's. There was even a Grossinger's brand rye bread you could purchase in the supermarket. I think that's how I first learned of them. Kutsher's, by the way, remains open. If I ever again visit the Catskills, I plan to drop by.
Beautiful documentary! Probably will trigger incredible memories for those who visited and worked there for many, many years to come. A few other resorts came back to life, repurposed, for example, by the Transcendental Meditation movement.
I am amazed at Ghost Towns but especially the resorts since Dogpatch brought awareness of like a Titanic on dry ground left behind and seems untouched.
Just came from listverse and it said this place was the inspiration for the hotel in Dirty Dancing and comedians like Mel Brooks, and my fav Danny Kaye once performed there. While watching this I thought wow Mr. Kaye himself once walked these halls and maybe even sat at one of those chairs in the bar. Truly awesome and sad at the same time. :(
This was a great vid with music that fit it to a t. Thank you for this. I watched a video of some abandoned places earlier where the music just killed it. two thumbs up sir

very well done.. impressive.. while watching it all that I kept saying was "this is so sad".. being one of many who grew up in the area (never actually being inside).. I always wondered what fancy folks were there.. and now I see this?? just breaks my heart... I get an odd feeling of .. one day.. is this what all we know will look like? ~ I hoep not. thank you again...
What a shame to let a beautiful place like this be let go. Another example of Conienance over quality. I bet in it's hay day , it was the place to go for vacations. So sad.
So sad, people could be living in these abandoned homes. With the right tools, people could come together & repair.Would be excellant for people who were put out of their homes, fell on hard times, & need a pick me up.To live, not go to waste. So sad.
This was a really interesting video. It looked like a massive beautiful resort at one time, not that long ago. Does anyone know what happened to it and why?
Does anyone know why none of the furnishings were sold/donated before these places were abandoned? It's such a shame to see all of those things left to rot when so many could have benefited from them.
what the hell happened to Sullivan county? they should be rebuilding this, but instead lets go and get casinos here that provide nothing but minimum wage jobs and gambling problems.
Supposedly, the powerful gambling interests in Atlantic City paid a lot of $$$ to make sure that gambling competition never came to the mountains...thus you see a 'wasteland'...so sad!!!
Doubt they will do a casino in the Catskill's. ANY new casino's in New York will be thought out, very carefully. The market is saturated. They've shut several in Jersey, because of competition in PA. If they do build, it would probably be closer to NYC. Talks and Big plans have been the rule of the day for 30 years. Talk is cheap and if you can pull in a million simply putting together a plan- There you go. Make money on making plans, not actually building and running a huge eyesore.
the thing is that the locals need something to do, not the tourists. how about instead of making us a tourist attraction, you make us a community. teenagers their families need something to do here, not casinos and gimmicks.
I grew up swimming, skiing, ice skating, tobogganing, waiting tables and giving tennis lessons at Grossinger's. The final nail in its coffin came when Atlantic City legalized casino gambling.

what year did Grossinger's close? and how long was this after Jennie Grossinger died? we went there in April 1961 for my grandparents' 50th anniversary.
OUTSTANDING! This is one joint I would just sit me and down a six pack by the old ass pool and let the ghost of memories soak into my wretched soul. Just fascinating. I have NOOO life BTW.
Did the boy catch up with you??I will look up the Concord coz I thought I had seen on YT that it was bulldozed down?I may go to the mountains of Md and Pa soon.I've never been to Knoebels near Harrisburg and have wanted to go for a long time.I did go to Hershey a few years ago but the park was closed.I enjoyed the zoo next door and the choc factory tour. The park opened up 2 weeks later for Easter or before Mothers Day.
Some reasons why the Catskills resorts declined: old guests retired to Florida; yuppies flew to Europe; seniors bused to Atlantic City. In recent years, efforts to implement gambling have provided hope of an area rebirth.
I just looked up the Concord on Google and YT isn't letting me post a link. The old hotel is gone but they are building a new one.I'd like to see pics of the new one.
It's a shame what is happening to this country and our state. Your video depicts the future like a post economic holocaust, like one of those History/Discovery channel shows about life after we're gone. What can we do to stop the bleeding?
My hubby isn't sure if the guy is related to the Grossingers but w/the same last name,he probably is.He is out in Calif.now.I've heard of the Concord from here on YT but not Kutsher's,I will look it up.I would love to see the Pocconos.I think they still have some famous resorts open compared to upstate NY.
These videos break my heart. I’m 64, with a history of going to the Catskills every summer as a kid.
Such terrific photography of such an amazing place. This place should have been preserved.
I use to go there every summer in the early 70's until the early 80's.... what

+Misha Sandro My Uncle worked there and my Dad was a bellhop in the 1950's in the summer. A very strong connection to my family. Very sad that it ended this way.
+Sally Cannon yes.... a very sad death indeed.... I can almost hear the laughter and gayety of yesteryear.
70's too, till around '80 at the latest. :)
i live in loch sheldrake which is like 5 miles from that resort and everything in sullivan county is trash now what a shame
Hi, what a story! Lot's of memories. Unbelievable almost how it turned out this way. From Europe, greetz!

Beautiful architectural photography of the ruins. Very well done.
Thank you so much Mason! So glad you enjoyed :)

Great captures of such a once upon a time beatiful resort. RIP Grossinger's
This is so sad. Grossingers was such a lovely place. I remember as a kid going to the barrel jumping each winter with my family. Also going downstairs and watching the people swimming in the pool. The youth group from church use to go there and swim each winter also.
I grew up in Monticello, NY. Grossinger’s was a big deal in the 60’s and 70’s. The Catskills was a wonderful place to live.
very moving and sad for a time that will never return
Poignant! Very nicely done. Your video underscores the futility of trying to hold on to anything "forever." The juxtaposition of past and present is particularly well done. Thanks for the great work!
those pools were gorgeous! especially the indoor one. What a great video.
Excellent photos. The pool is truly eerie. We used to go there every winter.
Well done...one of the VERY rare occasions when the music is appropriate
9 years ago u still reply?
Great video! Indoor pool area is beautiful and the outdoor one looks huge! Had to have been a great place.
Absolutely beautiful video. Haunting but amazing. Well done.
Your video truly does this old resort justice; you are a great artist; your eye for detail is very sharp, I recently stumbled across your video's because I love to watch urban exploration, it's clear to me now, that the others are just trying to copy your work, they don't even come close.
+David Rodriguez Thank you very much. You are too kind!
Beautiful and haunting.
I'm crying.. just beautiful..
Marvelous video, with haunting music...so sad the Catskill resorts, are now bygone history.
Wow, beautiful! The indoor swimming pool design was ahead of it's time. That could pass as a contemporary interior if it was still in working order. Love the music and photography too :).
i was there in 1974 on a senior trip it was beautiful..so sad to see it abandoned..i had such good memories there..
Wow. Places like this are so fascinating, Poignant and sad. Thanks for uploading!

My grandma learned to skate there too. She skated with an Olympic ice skater who would practice there (Sonja Henie). My grandma still has her skates.

Well done, good theme music
i like the music, starts of kind of with a creepy feeling and then turns into something showing what it used to be
I love the flash back photos to present
Love this haunting video. The music is especially appropriate. What and who does this piece?
Went there July 1962, my Pastor Jerry Cardo knewa Mrs. Grossinger, I was blown away, Golf Course was a monster killed me and my dad.Was forced to dance with somebody's grandmother.Lots of stuck up wealthy teenagers from Westchester County.
awesome job on this cool music and excellent mixture of the occupied/unoccupied images very haunting
Wow this place is huge!! There looks heaps of stuff that can busted up there! It would be an urbex smashfest paradise.

This place is beautiful!
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing this.
Holly crap. Someone with good taste in Music. VAST - Lady Of Dreams.
For a musician like me, the instrumental music is an especially poignant accompaniment for this sensitive, brief documentary. I was privileged to perform at the Concord which remained open a few years longer than Grossinger's. Thanks for your work. Another casualty of the Borshct belt. So many lovely resorts laid waste by changing tastes and the jet.

Beautiful documentary! Probably will trigger incredible memories for those who visited and worked there for many, many years to come. A few other resorts came back to life, repurposed, for example, by the Transcendental Meditation movement.
I enjoyed watching, thanks for sharing. For some reason I really liked seeing the pay phone...
It looks like it was quite a place at one time.

Nice video thanks for sharing the pictures.
The Pools, and atrium's are Grand structures, even in the aftermath!
Oh dear this is just so sad it makes me want to cry. How come so many of these resorts abandoned in New York?
What a shame to let a beautiful place like this be let go. Another example of Conienance over quality. I bet in it's hay day , it was the place to go for vacations. So sad.

nrred So sad. What a waste! Good point!
I loved the video! Beautiful imagery! Anyone know what the music is thats playing?
Very nicely done!!
So glad these images were recorded 10 years ago before the property was further damaged by vandals. Now most room shown here are covered in graffiti.

The state government put those casinos in. Its called crony capitalism. If you want the foregone back, stop voting for these people.
Locals suffer at casinos..................
this is history and it needs to be saved
I grew up swimming, skiing, ice skating, tobogganing, waiting tables and giving tennis lessons at Grossinger's. The final nail in its coffin came when Atlantic City legalized casino gambling.

this was great - are there any videos of what the Homowack looks like now. I used to vacation there with my family back in the 70's -
Well done......
shame such beautiful places end up like this..
Friend, the Borscht Belt was killed by air travel, assimilation, and A/C. Suburbia and television also played a role.

Its a shame that a large piece of history in the catskills ended up like this i was born in liberty and remember when the hotel was open
It's a shame what is happening to this country and our state. Your video depicts the future like a post economic holocaust, like one of those History/Discovery channel shows about life after we're gone. What can we do to stop the bleeding?
hi.. any chance a pic of the front entrance.. i have some negs from 1949 of this place i think..cheers
The artist is Vast can't remember the song. Japanese daydream or something.
Lady of Dreams is the song title :)
I was at Grossinger's for my grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary in 1984. Very sad.
Im going there right now and buying it and going to restore it NOWWW!
