    I think that even though most of these videos' results saying "it doesn't really matter", that doesn't mean they are pointless. It shows that most things that a lot of people throwing around as "essential" are more PC myths save for special scenarios... So thank you Luke and LTT

      That's exactly how I view all of the Workshop videos, and I feel like that's how it'll continue to be. Although that's not necessarily a bad thing.

      i agree. it is nice to not stress about these little things when building my pc. Some times the little things are the things that have no solid answer. i prefer down so my psu doesn't suck in the hit air from the 2nd gpu but never tried to change it up to help flow more air out of the gpu.

    This was was actually very interesting to me as I've personally changed from having the PSU oriented fan down, to having it fan up. I have a Corsair 550D case (without an isolated PSU compartment) together with a Corsair HX750 PSU (semi-passively cooled). While under load there is no difference in behaviour between the two setups, in idle or during low-stress tasks my PSU would reach it's thermal threshold and activate the fan every 15 minutes or so while oriented fan down. This is not the case when I orient the PSU fan up, and I came to the conclusion that the chassi fans help ever so slightly to push air through the PSU, keeping the PSU temperature under threshold. Glad to see my theory was somewhat in-line with your conclusion. While you say there is no big difference in setups, there could actually be a somewhat "big" difference during light use of the machine, as evidenced in my case. Additionally, my particular PSU doesn't have variable fan speed. If it's activated, it's loud. I resolved a big source of annoyance simply by changing the PSU orientation in my particular case.

    Does rgb led strips affect temperature?

    • @ShadowManceri
      @ShadowManceri 8 лет назад +16

      That would be yes. LED's convert around 75% of their used energy to heat. So 100W strip inside the case would be like 75W heater inside it. Very similar to adding another GPU. Tho 1W strip won't make any notable difference.

      But you also have to consider in your calculations that blue leds make you system actually cooler, red leds make it way faster and green leds more efficient. So in the end it is worth it! And if you use white leds you get a little bit from everything.

    One thing to consider: if you place the PSU with the fan UP it will create negative pressure in the case. If you have too much positive, that may be a good thing, but if you are already leaning towards negative pressure then you might be better keeping the PSU with the fan down. Another thing to consider is if you have a filter below that fan. If not then orienting it with the fan up will provide fresh air (if positive pressure in the case and all the intake fans have filters on them). I find this important since not many people are ready to open the PSU to clean it.

    +/- air pressure is a consideration here. Flipping the PS upside down could make a difference in the overall air pressure in the case. In general you always want to maintain positive air pressure to ensure intake is only through your air filters. Otherwise have fun dusting out your case on a more regular basis!

      It actually does make a difference, but only in the PSU's temperature. Installing it with the fan facing downwards makes its temperature lower (on the last test it was higher because the fan wasn't even spinning to reduce noise). So the conclusion is that the fan should be facing down.

    • @Mismatch-
      @Mismatch- 8 лет назад +3

      PS: However, they missed the opportunity to test something that would probably make a difference in the CPU/GPU temps: PSU fan facing up or down with no other fans in the case whatsoever.

  • @richscott2483

    With a basement vent and filter on your case/tower, mount the PSU so its fan is downward. As 3c to 4c can make a difference while sitting in the room on a hot day as your desktop runs. Just like your monitor, the closer you are next to it you feel the heat. Electronic components don't like Hot or Cold environments but as I learned in the U.S. Navy as a 26 year career veteran as an Aviation Electronics Technician that cooler temperatures is best. Since electronic components heat up, the ambient temperature of the surrounding area in which they operate in is better in the cold. Solder joints and corrosion plus all the stress the equipment takes being mounted in an aircraft is shattering. Like your car has struts and shock absorbers all that electronic stuff that is installed will one day malfunction, so don't live by the ocean, don't live in the dessert, don't live where in winter time the roads are salted, don't let your stuff freeze, don't drive your car through high water as if it were a submarine, and avoid as many pot holes as you can. Now take your cellular phone and toss it against the wall and on the ground and jump on it. Better yet, juice yourself up with static electricity like the Adam's Family - Uncle Fester and see if you can light up a light bulb. Remember that electricity and water don't mix. Keep you liquids a safe distance from your computer. Oh! LINUS "LTT" has several cats "pets" which he should not let near or walk all over his keyboard, top of the laptop or desktop.… they are animals and unfortunately they might pee on your (Linus'es) expensive stuff. Oh man, this was working last night … what happen to it?

  • @AsthmaQueen
    @AsthmaQueen 8 лет назад +3

    @Luke There's an issue with your testing methodology;
    The GPU used in the "no" basement version is a blower as I'm sure your aware, Blows and exhausts air from the case, clearly evident in the fact that the case is alot cooler in general.
    Therefore, Hot air isn't being exhausted into the case, or worst yet directly into the PSU.
    The GPU used in the first test does exhaust some of its air since it has lengthwise fins, but still exhausts a large amount of it into the case instead of exhausting it out.
    Retry this test with a little more worse case scenario's and maintaining the same GPU's. Most GPU's do not have lengthwise cooling fins like the Asus does, so in most cases say SLI Gigabyte 980ti's or something like that, which exhaust almost all their air into the case, or many ACX coolers on 290's 290x's etc.
    So if someone tries to do PSU up config, and has 2 heavy power using cards, they will find their PSU getting pretty freaking hot in a Mid tower case.
    My experience of this myself is having 2x 5870's and a 8800GT all doing folding at home overnight, in a HAF932 (Bottom PSU facing UP) Having my Corsair hx850 basically burn me when I touched the side, was easily 70c+ The Single slot 8800gt was the main culprit as the two 5870's were blowers, but the 8800GT doesn't exhaust at all, and was feeding air Straight into the PSU.
    This is a case where PSU up literally could have killed the PSU.

      PSU up if you have negative air pressure, back of case directly next to a wall, or is on the ground.
      PSU down in all other situations.
      If the PC case only has bottom PSU intake then you'll have to make sure to avoid all of the scenarios that is for PSU up.

    For the PSU upside down config where it takes in air from the case instead of under, the fan does not turn-on or is slow for high-quality PSUs.
    If you add another 140mm fan, or mod your PSU so the fan is always on or taking power from the mobo, you essentially get another exhaust. Balance that with an intake fan and you get better results.

    I think it's simple. Having the cooler upwards, means pulling warm air into the psu. Probably the temperature inside the case decreases, but the PSU cooler is not for cooling the inside of the pc. It needs fresh air and it can get fresh air only from the downside. That's why mostly every case has an opening for the psu cooler at the bottom. Now tell me I'm wrong?

      I think it's safe to say that you should never orient the PSU fan pointing up at the graphics card in that case, even if it is blower style... Most likely the same results as if it was pointed up at the basement roof like the Coolermaster case.

    • @VaguelyFluffy
      @VaguelyFluffy 8 лет назад

      And most mITX cases have PSU vents... Don't know any that don't. I have a Silverstone RVZ02 with an SFX PSU and it's totally fine. And since those cases are so specialized, they aren't as modifiable as regular mid towers.

      My point is that it's a much more relevant question in a small form factor case, since there's much less air inside them (thus having less air for the GPU and CPU to breathe), and therefore it might make a difference there, but we'll never know, since LMG don't seem to ever be thorough in their experiments.

    Just a funny fact to point out, I have a hybrid fan in PSU as well and when I have it pointing up, the temperature in PSU is low but when fan turns on, it spins longer since it's pushing hot air downwards and as we all know heat goes up. When fan in PSU is pointing down it turns on more frequently but it runs for less than 2 seconds, since it takes fresh air from outside. And yes, I can confirm that IT DOES NOT AFFECT temperatures in the case AT ALL. :) I hoped for more tests here, like case with the PSU on top above the cpu.

If it's on a wooden floor then I'd have it facing down for optimal cooling. In case some didn't know, a PC that's sitting on carpet drags a hell of a lot more dust into it than those on wood.

    what really helps with temps when using internally exhausted gpus is to remove all the pci slot covers and put a fan there for exhaust. if you have a front intake fan at the bottom and the one in the back with a large gpu blocking off most of the upper case it creates a sort of wind tunnel to suck the hot air out the pci slots.

    If your psu has a 0 noise mode wich turns the fans of having the fan face up is more silent because that way the heat can go into the case while if the psu fan was on the bottom the heat would have newhere to go because heat goes up. So basicly up is more silent and down is cooler case temps.

    You need to lower your exhaust fan and increase its speed when you have an open GPU cooler (the non-blower types that leave the warm air in your case). If your case has adjustable fan slides, lower your exhaust fan as low as it can go and make sure it spins a few hundred RPM faster than the intakes. Your GPU will run noticeably cooler. You can make your system quieter overall by increasing the exhaust fan speed alone.

    8:50 lol no! PSU Fan was not spinning. The control loop of the Fan is not so sophisticated that it's a static system. It's probably a oscillating system. You just happened to measure it at the point where heat was accumulating without the fan spinning. It would probably heat up to a certain threshold where the fan would kick in to cool it down before it reaches a low threshold and the fan turns off. Basically this experiment did not capture the whole picture regarding the subject we looked at: PSU orientation. Though I think the info we did pull out points to PSU fan pointing down is always better.

    3 years later here is another reason to mount the psu upside as an exhaust:
    if you have an AMD X570 mobo, it has a chipset fan wich sits directly
    under the gpu. so its sucking in hot air from the gpu. to avoid that you
    can mount the gpu vertically in some cases. and the gpu's hot air is
    dumped into the psu shroud. now mounting the psu upside will suck the
    gpu heat through the psu out of the case, while the upper-rear exhaust
    fan takes care of the gpu from the upper side as well as of the cpu's
    heat.

    You should turn off all thermal throttling and fac controls when doing this. These systems are designed to keep the stuff at a fairly constant temp. As the temp inside rises, the fan spins faster with the outcome being a temp delta of close to zero.
    So turn all of this off and lock in the active cooling and then run the tests. This would be a true test of the configs since it would rule out all the variables other than the ones you are testing for.

    Reasons to have the fan side down:
    PSU doesn't get caked with dust from the inside of the system as there's no fan filter when it's facing up while there is one while it faces down
    The 24-pin is closer the the cable management holes on your chassis with the fan-side down.
    Lower PSU temperatures lead to longer longevity of PSUs not quite as good as the super high-quality Corsair RMi.

    So here is the case this will make a huge difference:
    - Case with no fan + CPU Noctua fan + silent GPU. = > big difference since the power supply will take the hot air out.

    I'm kind of surprised by this. When i did an upgrade in January i had huge overheating problems until i moved around the cooling a bit.
    previous: fans at the top/rear of the case exhausting air (one of them one of those closed loop AIO liquid CPU coolers), a 6950 (outputs all air out of the back of the card) and the PSU pulling air in from a vent at the bottom of the case. One fan at the front pulling cool air in. all was fine
    After upgrade: same as before but a new r9 390 which vents all air into the case. result - huge overheating of the GPU with it's fan hitting 70-80% speed and sounding like a hurricane. the side panel at the bottom of the case was getting noticeably hot to the touch.
    turning over the PSU so it pulled air from inside the case did help quite a bit, but the GPU was still running hot and loud. I eventually completely fixed it by adding another intake fan at the front-underside of the case to pull in more cool air to that area.

    Any sort of fan/airflow orientation will work if the PC stands that high up in the middle of a table in the middle of the room. Less dust, further away from the wall.
