Hi Sam, sorry that happened to you. Bamboo is such a good material for frame building. You're right, those fibers i think they're hemp which is plenty strong for normal riding but for a jump/ pumptrack bike i'd use carbon fiber. We run a bamboo guided tour business here in barcelona, and our bikes have their joints put together with both fiberglass and carbon fiber and we use them on a daily basis and they hold up pretty well. Some of them are 8 years old with no signs of weakening or cracks. Loved the video, have a nice day everyone!
See if you guys can figure out a way to make the joint's more resist to shock. To be honest I'd totally start downhill mtb again on a bamboo frame if it could handle the shock and stress of going down what's pretty much a cliff
Actually I would never use any kind of bamboo frame or part. They cost like a normal aluminium frame and they are insecure. 400 dollar for a piece of wood is not the right price for this joke.
@@bt7267 I think you should try a bamboo frame before to give an judgement, for your information bamboo frame is more strong than carbon frame. Since 10 years we build Bamboo bikes and now we are developping BMX prototypes with profesional rider, we will send you videos of test of resistance doing Big jump like this you will see what is possible to do with good bamboo frames..
Sam, we enjoy watching your videos even without risk of serious injury involved. I'd like to watch your channel for a long time to come. Don't feel like you need to push the limits beyond your comfort level for us... your personality is what makes the channel, and theres lots of strange things you can do without taking such strong risks. Take it easy and Merry Christmas.
This 100%! That crash was gnarly as hell. You are extremely lucky that your chest/shoulder took almost the entire hit against the relatively soft front wheel. If that hadn't happened your face was literally going straight towards the curb, it could have been devastating. Stay safe Sam!
I think Sam building bikes is one of my favorite parts of this channel. I am so intimidated by a lot of jobs, and I worry about fit. And Sam just slams it all together and everything works and if it doesn't he makes it work. Mint
Indeed, that tire was essential in stopping him. In a situation like this (that joint was going to snap) I would suggest wearing a helmet with a chin, and a chest protection plate.
Pils you're killin me. After all the accomplishments you still have that drive that pushes you to do these insane things. World's first or last, you're an absolute legend!
That frame was not meant for that kind of abuse!...i saw this "incident" coming before he started!...i think this also prove's he probably whacked his melon a few time's before he started wearing protective gear 😅😂😅😂!...
The bamboo didn't fail though, the weird fibre resin mix used to bond it at the nodes did. I figure a bike made from bamboo that's lugged with carbon or titanium would be really solid and comfy. I'd even go as far as saying that a titanium lugged bamboo rigid MTB for weekend trips may be one of my biking dreams. Triple triangle because why not, elevated chainstays because why not, Surly Moloko bars, Shockstop stem and seat post, the mint equipment.

That looked gnarly. Glad you're ok bro. They should try doing the joins with carbon fiber. I think a black and bamboo frame would look sick. And probably be a lot stronger.
Very fun video, as always Sam! I'm making bamboo bikes since 2008 and stoped using hand lay-up on the main joints because are not strong, now using vacuum bag. In the video, we can see that the failure was on the hemp/epoxy joint, not on the bamboo.
Bamboo is phenomenally strong and I was sure it would not break; but as soon as I saw the joints I knew that's where it would go... and it did. Well done. How about a mechano or tinkertoy bike somehow? ;)
