- One of my favorite post processing tricks is the Orton effect, and I am pretty sure I do it a bit differently than most... let me show you how I do it, and lets rename it after me... ehh?

Superb. I had literally just finished using the Orton Effect on an image (I don't often do it) and was a bit underwhelmed with the results. Your video popped up on RUclips so I watched it and went back in to re-edit the image. What a transformation. Thanks so much! And the timing was impeccable.

I've been playing around with this in some woodland shots and it really helps to add depth to the scene. I also like it on sunset skies and waves, again adding a lot of depth and atmosphere. Subtlety and selectivity are the keys to making this work without people knowing what's going on.

I always love picking up on the smallest things. While I've learned about the Orton Effect from other youtubers, the tip about managing it to only the highlights through a luminosity mask was the extra tip I needed to take it further. I use the Blend If layer option for this and find it a bit easier to control how much of the highlights I want to target. Your thoughts on the Blend If way?

For greater accuracy in the highlights do the following. After creating new layer and blurring top layer. In the top menu go Select, Colour range then eye drop a highlight part of the image. Adjust Fuzziness to taste. Click okay. It will automatically make a selection. Create layer mask in top layer. Adjust opacity to taste. For stronger effect put blend mode to screen and adjust opacity to taste. otherwise leave normal blend mode.
First off, I'm loving these latest tutorial-type videos. Also, love your alter-ego guy. Here's a hint for him. Add a bulky, maybe fringed, scarf wrapped several times around the neck. Search Pinterest for hipster men's outfits to get the scarf thing right. Thrift stores are good sources.

Great video as ever Nick. For those not using PS, could you do something similar in Lightroom?
I'm thinking a large radial filter to cover the whole image, use a combo of Feather, Luminance range masking and smoothness to pick the highlights you want to effect. Then bump exposure, contrast and reduce sharpness (to create the blur) as you did in camera raw. Then use the "amount" slider like the opacity slider to balance the effect so you get that nice sweet spot between glow and blur?
Ill be in New York at the end of October and I’m excited to try this method on some photos inside Central Park, hopefully there will be some fall colors.

Step 1: Take Pin-Sharp Photo
Step 2: Blur photo
*Attention: If amature and all photos are always blurry, skip this step

"slightly less like nick screwed up" haha that was brilliant. Never understood what Orton effect was. May give this a go whilst trying exposure blending as well, throw myself right into deep end. Also good to see how easy lumenzia is to use for masking as been getting lost seeing which one to get.
I use a variation of this effect a lot. Works well with most landscape shots, and also with portraits.
I use Affinity Photo but the process is pretty much identical to PS:
Duplicate main pixel layer twice, add Gaussian blur with multiply blend mode to the top duplicate, and a screen blend mode to the second duplicate. Then just balance the opacities of each till you get what you want... as you alluded to... less is usually more.

Nice tip! I think that one can also use Blend If to restrict the effect to the highligts easily.

Came here through Matt Grangers latest video. Hope to find your Dodge and Burn technique cause I have seen so many, hoped that you had something that added some value to all of them . However, I couldn't find one, maybe you could make one in the near future.
I was drawn to this video and I tried it out on my recently shot mushroom images with highlights here and there from the sun through the trees on the branches and mushroom head.
It is noticeable and it looks nice, would it substantially increase the quality of a shot, not so sure, maybe 2%, but I will try it more often to see what's the result on other pictures.
3 remarks:
You should start with making it a smart object so you could adjust the blur afterwards if needed (always use smart objects).
When are you changing to Capture One, LR is a bit of past tense since C1 has completely matured now. (layers and superb color management for starters)
And from another video of your, sharpening in LR ... cough .... LR has the worst sharpening there is. Do it in PS or better a third party add-on in PS.
I'll subscribe for now but make it worth hehehehehehe

Hello, Nick. Do you feather the mask? Also, do you use the Camera Raw interface in this case for convenience? I ask because you can just saturate and increase contrast within PS just as quickly (perhaps Camera Raw because you can see the adjustments before applying them..?). Thanks. Appreciate these tutorials big time.
since I create the mask while the layer is at 12 percent opacity.. its actually very slightly feathered.... I use camera raw because well, it a one stop way of doing all the different things I want to do to that layer.. sometimes if I am blowing out highlights in a sky when adding contrast and brightness, I will even add a graduated filter to the sky to maintain those highlights on the blurred layer... really flexable and powerfull and all in one step

It's an interesting idea. I confess I cannot see it in my 42mp photos at the recommended opacities, so too subtle for my eyes.
Kind of seems like a lot of work for not a lot of result... but glad to know you're happy with it. Who knows, maybe some day I'll use it :p I do like the post processing video regardless :)
It seems like a lot of work, but it takes longer to explain than it does to actually do. It’s a subtle affect and kind of gets lost in a video but it is such a nice pleasing effect that it’s totally worth the effort
At 1:40, do you expect us to photoshop you and use the Nick Page effect? Cause you are opened up as a layer

So one of those things that pretty much needs Photoshop...You can create luminosity masks without a panel, I will have to create a video about it

Hello Michael, you can simply use Blend-If. Double-Click on the right-hand-side of the layer opens the Blend-If-Dialog-Box.
@@just_me8389 Blend if is a great option, its essentially a flexible luminosity mask that will change with the underlaying layers if they change. Much slower to create however and hard to see what your creating

Do you smart sharpen before doing the orton effect, or smart sharpen at the end?
sharpening is always the very last step.. unless we are talking about capture sharpening.. which is the very first
hello Nick. you mention back in the days of your canon 5d mk llll. did you upgrade to the sony for the extra pixels, or did you experience any deficiencies with the canon?
I upgraded for a combination of reasons, more dynamic range more megapixels and resolution, but because I was doing so much more video the video aspect of it weighed heavily on my decision as well
Easy peasy: control-shift-alt-option-43, orbit the sun twice, eject shadows, open pluto2, decrease orbital speed...........
Hi Nick, have you ever considered using a Tiffen Black Pro Mist filter on the camera instead of trying to recreate the effect in post? A low strength 8th or 1/4 filter will give a similar effect live in camera and it will also reduce the contrast a bit without softening the overall image. Basically it gives the shot a more film like appearance and blooms out the highlights slightly, without going the full-on mist effect.
I wouldn't use a filter like a "fog filter" unless its just something I would blend in at a low opacity, as it would be one of those destructive things you cant undo

I suppose I'm old school, coming from a video background, I was always taught to get it right in camera as post costs a lot of money, so I would automatically reach for an optical filter on the day rather than try and re-create the effect later on in post. Failing that, just take multiple shots of the same scene with and without filters and decide on which you think looks best at a later date. Anyway, keep up the good work. Rodney.

Do you use this effect when printing your photos as well, or only for your website/Instagram?
I literally use it on every single landscape photo and even a lot of my wildlife. I just use it to varying degrees

Why didn't you use bled if on the Norton effect?
I prefer Luminosity masks because I can pre-visualize what tones are being affected
