A few days ago, some dude jumped off a cruise ship for a dare and when they threw in a lifesaver he started swimming away from it at some point, most likely because he saw something else in the water with him. They never found him again but I can't imagine what must've went through his head as he saw the ship departing while he was in the middle of the ocean at night.
I think that's the same person from this clip. I saw the video on Reddit, the same day the call went out to the United Cajun Navy volunteers to go find him. UCN, and Coast Guard, looked for two days. Never found him. Don't jump in the ocean, kids. You're gonna have a bad time.

Orca kill people. That orca was hunting the people on the boat someone being so misinformed that they don't realize that orcas are the hunters of the ocean. Every shark movie out there is about orcas
I do not have Thalassophobia, i've been obsessed with the ocean and sea creatures my whole life. But, i do have panic attacks. And panic attacks are bad enough on land. But having a panic attack that far underwater sounds like an absolute nightmare.
Yeah most places won't teach you scuba or certify you if you have a history of anxiety or panic conditions so that you don't die Source: I have a history of panic attacks and the local scuba instructors said hell no
15:04 That “cloud formation” is what is called a Derecho. In that type of storm there are winds in excess of 100 mph (160 KPH) and those winds typically last more than an hour before the worst part of the Derecho moves on. Just look up Derecho in Ohio and it will bring up videos of one that was within the past few years and it is terrifying to watch. The winds just pick apart huge buildings, many houses, and picks up and moves vehicles like they are nothing. Derechos always look like that cloud formation when they are getting close.
Orcas in the iberian peninsula are actually targeting boats now. Scientists think a orca with a grudge attacked a boat once and pass the behaviour down to the other, since orcas have a sort of culture where they teatch the young hunting techniques and vocalization specific to each orca population.
I wouldn’t say I necessarily get scared by these videos, just extremely uncomfortable/intimidated. It’s both scary and intriguing to be reminded of how small we are
I know you may feel water content is what makes you popular, and to an extent yes it may bring in new people fast, but as someone who has watched you for a long time, anything you play or watch is fun and you're the reason i always come back. I hope you expand to doing things you like and what interest you, and i hope everyone else feels the same
the fear of the ocean for me is not just the abyss staring back at you its the fact that if something was to swim across or up yoy cant see the creepy thing is if you can see it and its bigger than you expected and you cant run you cant fight you cant ask for help all you can do is hope its not something dangerous and pray. its just the fear of not knowing what’s in the abyss and the silence thats why subnautica creeped me the hell out i hated it
I scuba dive and when you are ascending up you usually put a little air into the BC, plus if you go up from a certain depth too fast you could pop your lungs from the air expanding from the pressure. You can also get nitrogen poisoning as well if you go up too quickly, I’m just hope the person who panicked didn’t end up with any of those considering how fast they all went up.
I saw a video where that was explained. She was in shock but turned out okay and didn't get any conditions, thankfully, the other divers slowed her down enough. She was not a professional diver.
This was a particularly good one….. the windmill,,, crater lake,, man overboard,, that volcano! THAT ORRRCCAAA!!! Jeeeesus!! Uggg Edit: you said “I don’t think it was trying to attack them”,, but I’ve heard that orcas have been attacking boats lately…. Like, they’ve learned boats=food…… that video is horrifying…. Even that dog in the ocean was scary!! That thing looks particularly LIKE FOOD,,, man my fear of the ocean is really kicking after this video…. Great one.
Great stuff! Also if you're curious, that thing at the front of cargo ships that the chad in the lawn chair was sitting on is called a bulbous bow. It creates a little mini-wave that negatively interferes with the normal bow wave to minimize drag on the hull. I remember seeing a video about it a long time ago, def worth checking out. Love your videos!
This fear is one of the most understandable phobias IMO. Im a scuba diver and have been for most of my life and I love it more than anything, but I will always be startled when I jump off the boat and look down, unable to see the sea floor.
I always assume I don't have this phobia, yet every time I watch one of your videos I question that... What gets me always is huge partially submerged things. I don't want to be near one of those, ever.
@immortalrasta you have probably seen, but he has a lot of videos on adjacent water phobias and that's one that sounds like what you're describing :) I know it sucks but it's okay. I have trypophobia and THAT'S dumb hahaha
@@TestaRosssa_ oh I've watched his submechanophobia vids, that's exactly it. It's fine though, I already spend an exceptionally small amount of time in water, let alone near partially submerged mechanical structures, so this phobia doesn't affect my life in any significant way.

I think that last one is Photo-shopped. Thanks for sharing these. It gives me massive anxiety, but I always feel like I accomplished something when I watch em!
the animal at like 8:31 is probably an orca whale. they are known to take out boats. on purpose. some of them teach other orcas how to destroy and sink boats.
I would jump in a mildly deep part of water if Greg reached 100k. You’re the only channel I watch as soon as you drop videos! Hope to see you grow more 💪
The first time I went diving, one person that was also their first time panicked really bad but the guy that was accompanying them managed to calm them down enough to not take the mask off and go up calmly. But it was crazy to watch that.
I think there's a video on r/oddlyterrifying that shoes a massive tuna coming out of nowhere within the blue abyss, catching a piece of meat and vanishing just as fast as it arrives all without disturbing the surface! Not the tiniest ripple! It's so terrifying!
I don't have this phobia but I have a combination of wanting to go into the deep ocean because of how quiet and calm it is and being terrified of what might be lurking there at the same time.. and whenever I watch your videos I just want to hug you and everyone and tell you it's going to be okay
I sometimes have nightmares about really deep swimming pools and being able to see right down to the bottom. In the nightmare i am unable to walk near the pool without getting extremely shaken.
3:40 this is exactly what I hate about “POV:” TikTok. They just copy what other people are doing because it’s popular without doing any basic research lol.
I told my buddy one time, "I don't think we should be terrified of what's in the water. I think we should be more worried about what is NOT in the water." He shivered and said, "Dude, I'd rather not think about that."
i should say that the diver was almost definitely a beginner, possibly a first timer. The brightness indicates that they weren't that deep, so going up is as simple as pressing a button on a hose attached to your suit and just floating up. Never saw anyone who could just panic randomly like that, to the point of abandoning their regulator, stay in the hobby for any period of time, they either get over it very quickly or give up after the first dive or two and leave
16:46 in this segment what also freaks me out is you can be at the surface and those animals are literally thousands of meters below you and you have no idea
Btw that scuba diver was a student that panicked and the instructor was trying to shove the mouthpiece in her mouth but she wouldn’t take it, you can scuba one day its just the right instructor you need
As a fellow thalassophobic, I find these videos oddly comforting as well as terrifying. Terrifying for obvious reasons but comforting cos I'm not alone in this phobia and I'm not being unreasonable or dramatic for having this phobia in a landlocked state in the US.
I hate seeing the bulbous bow of a big boat. It freaks me out so much it actually makes me feel a bit nauseous, it is super irrational but it just looks so out of place. The shot were it shows how tall that windmill is sent a shiver down my spine too.
2:27 as a person with this phobia and thinking about a person with their back to the abyss we know there’s nothing down there that we forget that sometimes and our phobia makes us think there’s something coming at you so seeing someone with the back to the abyss just gives me the biggest chills and like number one why are you even down there!?
I used to live in Bend, OR and went to Crater Lake a few times. It is so much bigger than videos and pictures can describe. Not only that, the crater is already a huge drop down to the water, then even further down to the bottom of the Lake. Very beautiful Lake but is kind of freaky, especially when it gets foggy. Oh, and there are quite a few urban legend/ghost stories about the lake. As for Scuba Diving, freaking out like that diver did was something that is very easily avoidable if you do what you are trained to do. IT is actually very safe and coming rom someone with your same fear, it is actually very fun. With the right training it is very safe.
8:47 - There hasn't been a single incident, where a wild orca killed a human. They sometimes do it when they are in captivity (Sea life etc.), because they are lonely and often treated bad, but you really shouldn't be frightened by the orcas. - I mean if the water scares you, I can respect that, but the orca is just curious or wants to show off ^^
Def recommend visiting crater lake. It’s an amazing place and there’s a magical aura to it. Also you can just stay on the outer rim! If you really want to go onto the lake there are guided boat tours.
I don't understand the fear of water, the depth, or the dark, but I am deathly phobic about what's in the water-especially sharks. If there were a vast, deep ocean that had absolutely no life in it, I'd be happy to be in it or on it.
I'm afraid of the sharks too because i don't want to die or loose a limb, but are you afraid of the little fishies too ? Like the super cute clown fish ?
I used to snorkel, but one time my stepdad, stepbrother and I went a little bit farther out and I made the mistake of turning and looking out at The Abyss. I freaked tf out and swam immediately back to shore. Haven’t really been able to get back into snorkeling since.
I am forever obsessed with watching your videos. Even my kids know you because I say I HAVE to watch your videos because I can't not watch them ever. Every video is perfection. Never stop
7:55 - those guys are whalers, and they had a harpoon in the animal and were dragging at the harpoon to wear the orca out. p.s. Had to look it up. Crater Lake is 1,940 ft. / 590 meters deep. I don't want to float over that.
The scariest thing for me in this video was the scuba diver having a panic attack. Imagine if they were deeper in the water and she just swam up to the surface without decompressing ... that could have ended very fatally for her
I went to Scotland recently and to Loch Ness, apparently there are over 400 samples of dna they have pulled from the lake that are unknown, and on their sonar they frequently see things that are larger than great whites. It is also fresh water which makes that pretty impossible. They have no idea what could possibly be down there. The Ocean probably has millions of creatures we've never seen as well.
I don’t fear water or deep water or anything. My fear, like how fear of dark is rather fear of what’s IN the dark, I hate being in water, looking down, and seeing nothing. Not empty seabed nothing, nothing, darkness. I hate thinking there’s something there
Hey Greg, my fiance and I love your videos. I never comment because we watch on our TV so it makes it a bit difficult. She knows all about liminal space now, and both of us love your retrofuturism and nightfeeling videos...well, we like all of them. We laugh at everything, and she laughs at me because I have thalassophobia too. Just wanted to share some love. Hope you have a great day!
I've had this phobia since I was little and I've gotten made fun of so bad because of it. I didn't even know it had a name until a couple years ago. People make fun of people that have phobias but they don't know how it feels to be completely overwhelmed by fear because of something.
I also have Thalassophobia, but it only really triggers when I'm actually on the ocean, not on a screen. I just hate the dark abyss right below me cause I always imagine a giant creature popping out of the abyss to eat me. Edit: i found out just a few minutes ago that i have another phobia "Megalohydrothalassophobia" and if you don't know what that means, it means the fear of giant underwater creatures or objects and i found that out through the first and second clip
nice to see someone else whos a thallaso-masochist lol, all that stuff freaks me out but i love any way i can experience it that isnt being in the ocean myself, great content
The diver’s fear reaction to remove the oxygen an mask is one of the scariest things I’ve seen in awhile. I knew I had thalassophobia was when I was afraid of the 2007 Wii game Endless Ocean.
I wonder, would you ever do a FAQ? if yes I wonder what the differene between the Ocean and The Night might be? like in case of feeling safe, seeing things.
One phobia I feel like would be good to review or to add on to the thalassophobia vids, is the fear of whirlpools, I’ve always found them scary. Just an idea 🙂👍
I just realized! If I had a underwater camera I would send you a video but in the town of Hilo on the island of Hawaii (where I was born and raised) one of my favorite beaches known as Ice Ponds and there is a "small" but really deep crater. So deep that I have never seen the bottom nor have I ever tried swimming to the bottom. As kids and even to this day we make jokes that there's sea monsters in the crater but when we swim over it we feel like those jokes are true.
18:02 F**k you for having that Sonic outro!! ;) Picture a 7 year old back 1991, playing innocent Sonic game alone and arriving at the Water Temple... I still get an amygdala level reaction with chest pressure from that tune ;) Not panic, but stress adrenaline even 33 years later :)

Greg your channel is a unique blend of eeriness, nostalgia, horror and the bleak unknown. It's why I always love seeing one of your videos
This is THE perfect description of the vibes here! His channel is one of my favorite places on RUclips.
Yeah most places won't teach you scuba or certify you if you have a history of anxiety or panic conditions so that you don't die
Source: I have a history of panic attacks and the local scuba instructors said hell no
FINALLY someone who truly understands 'POV:'😂
I learned it from p0rn
Yes, I'm with perfumeluvr.
Also, thank the cosmos! People use it like "POV"s a train of thought or something! Whew!

5:54 as an Australian, ball pyramid hasn’t been active for many many many many many MANY years. To be precise; 7 million years ago.
It’s both scary and intriguing to be reminded of how small we are
Don't have a phobia, but its reasonable to be afraid of waves that are bigger then your boat, its just math lol.
This phobia combines my two other phobias perfectly, fear of darkness and heights.
I have the fear of heights but on the water not at all, because i know i won't fall to the bottom underwater unless i want to
I know you may feel water content is what makes you popular, and to an extent yes it may bring in new people fast, but as someone who has watched you for a long time, anything you play or watch is fun and you're the reason i always come back. I hope you expand to doing things you like and what interest you, and i hope everyone else feels the same
Same here bro
Average "watches for content" fan VS Average "watches for youtuber" enjoyer
the fear of the ocean for me is not just the abyss staring back at you its the fact that if something was to swim across or up yoy cant see the creepy thing is if you can see it and its bigger than you expected and you cant run you cant fight you cant ask for help all you can do is hope its not something dangerous and pray. its just the fear of not knowing what’s in the abyss and the silence thats why subnautica creeped me the hell out i hated it
The Crater Lake one had me like “oh this isn’t bad… OH THAT IS TERRIBLE.”
2:59
Warning: you have entered ecological dead zone: are you sure what your doing is worth it?
I scuba dive and when you are ascending up you usually put a little air into the BC, plus if you go up from a certain depth too fast you could pop your lungs from the air expanding from the pressure. You can also get nitrogen poisoning as well if you go up too quickly, I’m just hope the person who panicked didn’t end up with any of those considering how fast they all went up.
I saw a video where that was explained. She was in shock but turned out okay and didn't get any conditions, thankfully, the other divers slowed her down enough. She was not a professional diver.
Recently a dude jumped off a cruise ship at night, They never found him again. It was a dare... Imagine that...
This was a particularly good one….. the windmill,,, crater lake,, man overboard,, that volcano! THAT ORRRCCAAA!!! Jeeeesus!! Uggg
Edit: you said “I don’t think it was trying to attack them”,, but I’ve heard that orcas have been attacking boats lately….
Wow that's a great invention
I always thought people just kept them after the rams from old warships lmao, thanks for the fact !
This fear is one of the most understandable phobias IMO. Im a scuba diver and have been for most of my life and I love it more than anything, but I will always be startled when I jump off the boat and look down, unable to see the sea floor.
yes this is the exact video i should watch before i sleep as a person with a crazy fear of deep water
Pfft samee
I always assume I don't have this phobia, yet every time I watch one of your videos I question that... What gets me always is huge partially submerged things. I don't want to be near one of those, ever.
Submechanophobia? :)
@@TestaRosssa_ yeah I suppose I have it. Fucking terrifies me.
@immortalrasta you have probably seen, but he has a lot of videos on adjacent water phobias and that's one that sounds like what you're describing :)
I know it sucks but it's okay.
@immortalrasta well that's fantastic! I could swim around all day but can't wear a shirt with holes in it 🤣
Greg, did you see the video of the teen that jumped off a cruise ship, at night, because he was dared...and disappeared. Body still hasn't been found.
Was just thinkin this
As someone who’s lived surrounded by sea their whole life, I never really understood the fear of the sea, but it’s interesting to see people’s perspective on it!
I think it says a lot about you that your followers just wanna hang out and look at Reddit with you. Great personality and entertaining. Love all your videos!
If you’re a predator and nothings prey, then it must be like the safest place on the planet being that deep.
Side note, I LOVE how long your videos are, thank you for giving us a really good amount of time haha!
I refuse to watch this at 11pm while I'm lying on my fully dry bed.
I think that last one is Photo-shopped. Thanks for sharing these. It gives me massive anxiety, but I always feel like I accomplished something when I watch em!
bro would never survive 10 mins in Subnautica
True, But! I did power through and ended up beating it. I played through it here on this channel and it was a wild ride 😅
the animal at like 8:31 is probably an orca whale. they are known to take out boats. on purpose. some of them teach other orcas how to destroy and sink boats.
I would jump in a mildly deep part of water if Greg reached 100k. You’re the only channel I watch as soon as you drop videos! Hope to see you grow more 💪
Do it
The first time I went diving, one person that was also their first time panicked really bad but the guy that was accompanying them managed to calm them down enough to not take the mask off and go up calmly.
THE ANNIVERSARY CAN WAIT BABE, THE GOAT UPLOADED A VIDEO!
2:45 RIGHTTT that’s what i be thinking too, im so glad someone also thinks the same way as me
I seriously think these videos have only increased my phobias
3:40 this is exactly what I hate about “POV:” TikTok. They just copy what other people are doing because it’s popular without doing any basic research lol.
I told my buddy one time, "I don't think we should be terrified of what's in the water. I think we should be more worried about what is NOT in the water." He shivered and said, "Dude, I'd rather not think about that."
Could you give an example
@@foreworm What do you mean?
Thanks!
Just ran myself a hot bath, and Greg uploads. The gods have smiled upon me
You’re not going to go IN the hot water I hope!
@@GregBroDudeMan actually I was planning to just stare at it and ponder the depths below
@@JerseyTealreally I am drinking the water
No. Do not, i repeat, DO NOT be embarrassed of this fear. It is just common sense.
i should say that the diver was almost definitely a beginner, possibly a first timer.
We know more about space than we do about oceans, apparently
The longer I watched this the more nervous I got 😅 did I just discover a new fear that I never knew I had???
Just wanna tune in on 5:44.
The woman isn't cheering, she's going "oh my god, oh my god" and someone else says "i'm scared" in Italian
Oddly enough, I find these videos relaxing. I find the ocean interesting and I enjoy your commentary. Your voice is nice to listen to.
16:46 in this segment what also freaks me out is you can be at the surface and those animals are literally thousands of meters below you and you have no idea
But.. they don't know you're there too ? Like us with the birds above us during the day ?
@dasilent15 true 🤣
You have great videos, always enjoy when you upload!
Btw that scuba diver was a student that panicked and the instructor was trying to shove the mouthpiece in her mouth but she wouldn’t take it, you can scuba one day its just the right instructor you need
As a fellow thalassophobic, I find these videos oddly comforting as well as terrifying. Terrifying for obvious reasons but comforting cos I'm not alone in this phobia and I'm not being unreasonable or dramatic for having this phobia in a landlocked state in the US.
fun fact: on ball's pyramid there is an endemic species of stickbug called a tree lobster
My hands get so clammy when I even think of significant heights or watery depths. Thanks for the extra nightmare fuel!
I know exactly what u mean I can’t even watch this I start crying
That volcano looks like every evil villain's lair ever.. LOL XD
What are your thoughts on the Titanic tourist submarine story? I immediately thought of your channel when I heard it.
I hate seeing the bulbous bow of a big boat. It freaks me out so much it actually makes me feel a bit nauseous, it is super irrational but it just looks so out of place.
The shot were it shows how tall that windmill is sent a shiver down my spine too.
It’s videos like this that made me want to dive more to conquer my fear. Now I love being in abyssal places so long as I’m not alone
2:27 as a person with this phobia and thinking about a person with their back to the abyss we know there’s nothing down there that we forget that sometimes and our phobia makes us think there’s something coming at you so seeing someone with the back to the abyss just gives me the biggest chills and like number one why are you even down there!?
My body is actually twitching/jolting watching these lol scarier than any paranormal videos I watch 😅
Playing Ark Survival Evolved has made me afraid of water covered in ice.
There was actually a person recently who jumped over board at night on a cruise ship at a graduation party or something. They never found him.
I don't understand the fear of water, the depth, or the dark, but I am deathly phobic about what's in the water-especially sharks. If there were a vast, deep ocean that had absolutely no life in it, I'd be happy to be in it or on it.
It's not the water itself I think it's the vast area and the fact that we can't see how far it goes back
I'm afraid of the sharks too because i don't want to die or loose a limb, but are you afraid of the little fishies too ? Like the super cute clown fish ?
I used to snorkel, but one time my stepdad, stepbrother and I went a little bit farther out and I made the mistake of turning and looking out at The Abyss. I freaked tf out and swam immediately back to shore. Haven’t really been able to get back into snorkeling since.
Sometimes I use my fear of deep water when I write. A lot of my cosmic horror short stories take place in towns that sit by the sea.
I’m a huge horror book fan and marine horror stories are *always* my favorite!
Humans are still the scariest animal by far. Poor Orca - wish it had capsized the boat.
Just when we needed him, he uploaded
Looks as if somebody in a small boat is getting some happy orca playtime
nice to see someone else whos a thallaso-masochist lol, all that stuff freaks me out but i love any way i can experience it that isnt being in the ocean myself, great content
I don’t have this fear, but man that orca video is so scary
The diver’s fear reaction to remove the oxygen an mask is one of the scariest things I’ve seen in awhile.
I knew I had thalassophobia was when I was afraid of the 2007 Wii game Endless Ocean.
I wonder, would you ever do a FAQ? if yes I wonder what the differene between the Ocean and The Night might be? like in case of feeling safe, seeing things.
FAQ would be cool
4:05 oh boy I bet you would love to know about the boy who recently jumped off a cruise ship and is still not found..
One phobia I feel like would be good to review or to add on to the thalassophobia vids, is the fear of whirlpools, I’ve always found them scary. Just an idea 🙂👍
9:12 that was definitely a killer whale and it definitely was chasing them and trying to kill them lmao
