I was swimming in the ocean years ago, and the tide had taken us way out to where the lifeguard was whistling and using a speaker to signal us to swim back. As we were about to, fish started jumping out of the water all around us, and being an avid shark week watcher, I knew that meant a predator was about. I was so scared, didn’t know if it was a dolphin or shark, but as we were swimming back as hard as we could, fish were bumping into our legs and that scared us even more. I’ve never been that far out ever again lol.
A few years ago I got caught in a riptide in the ocean. One minute the water was at my hip and the next minute I couldn’t even touch the sea floor. The tide just kept on pulling me back faster than I could swim. I’m not even joking when I say it only took a moment for me to get pulled so far back that the people on the shore looked like ants. Luckily I was saved by a lifeguard but yeah. Scary shit. I was surprisingly calm throughout it tho, lol.
had a horrifying dream the other night that I visited somewhere called "The Aquarium of the Dead". Basically all the fish in the the giant tanks were dead from neglect- but instead of floating up or falling down drifted mid tank- crawling with rot and tiny worms and parasites as they decomposed, and the aquarium had just given up and made the tiny creatures eating the corpses the exhibit.
I don't necessarily have thalassophobia, but the open ocean definitely makes me a little uncomfortable. So many things that make you feel and look insignificant.

That is the normal reaction even many of the people who have thalasssophobia I would still place it under being a normal reaction as humans are a land based organism as such the open water is a very hostile place to humans even without the wildlife that can kill you with zero warning.
Yep. I’m an experienced diver for 30 years. Trimix, deep diver and all this stuff. I feel unconfortable having a bath in open deep water too. You don’t know if you are watching the abyss or the abyss and whatever is there is watching you. Going down with all your equipment is fine, watching everything with your dive googles, but just swimming on the surface... humm
I remember getting into the deeper end of a pool once where the sun wasn’t shining and getting a bone chilling fear run up my spine. Didn’t know how to explain my fear then, but now I know what it is now. I’m okay if I can see around me, but when it starts getting dark we’re gonna have problems.
I had that same fear when I was swimming in some lake, and there was a thick cloud cover, and when I looked down and didn't see my legs, only the black water I freaked out.
I used to have that too! During the summer break I would visit my grandmother and we would go to the pool a few times a week. It was an outside pool, and about a third of the pool at the deep end was always covered by the shade of that building. My brain would alway imagine that sharks and crocodiles would swim there and I was terrified of that shaded part of the pool. I know now that I was pretty much scaring myself, but it felt so real to me. This lasted from when I was about 6 years old to when I was about 11 or something. Now I know better, so I’m not afraid of pools anymore, but the ocean and lakes and rivers still scare me way to much, so I don’t go near those.
Ahh I get it. In 5th grade I unusually got scared of a pool in one hotel near my house. It has two pool, one is 3 meter deep and the other is 1 meter. But there is one tunnel connected from pool 3m to 1m. It pitch dark because the 1m pool had darker floor colours. So I cannot see anything if I dive in 3m pool while looking at the tunnels. My imaginations strated to playing me because a thought of shark, crocodile or creepy creature were lurking from pool 1m to the tunnels and finally to 3m pools. Freaked me out so much lmao.
No orcas are genuinely terrifying. I lived in Alaska for a few years and went to the ocean a lot and they can try and circle and tip boats. They’re also one of the only few animals that kills for fun. And I for one, would rather swim without a cage with sharks than on a paddle board with an orca in the vicinity
except that an orca has never killed a human in the wild. They’re smart enough to be able to distinguish us from seals, therefore they don’t attack. Bumping boats and the sort is just because they’re naturally very curious creatures and often very playful.
My husband is a dive instructor but I’m deathly afraid of the sea. With a lot of coaxing when we visit local island on weekends, I finally got the courage to try snorkeling. I have never in my life had that much of a rush it’s like I’m addicted. The sheer fear of the ocean but at the same time the awe at the beauty. Just wow. My husband doesn’t still fully understand the fear for me, I don’t think water ppl like my husband will ever understand the fear. By the way we live in Maldives and the water is always so clear. My fear is of looking down and seeing so much vastness. I’m terrified writing this lol
I always get the urge to show off when I’m in the deep ocean(common reflex for that one thing everyone excels at) but people gotta stop being scared of sharks or Atleast take a sec to learn a bit about sharks before they jump on the scared train not knowing basically anything about their biggest fear…
@@mileswells4029 I completely agree. As far as I can tell (not having researched it heavily), JAWS was almost solely responsible for the widespread fear and misunderstanding of sharks. Even all these years later, those same people who were afraid of sharks for entirely incorrect reasons are raising children to believe the same thing (usually unintentionally). Me personally, I have no particularly strong fear of sharks, but rather of fear of fathomless or unknown waters. The idea that something could grab me by the foot when no one's looking is entirely a fear of my own making, but one I can't shake unless I can see the ocean floor. Like with many fears, they're illogical, simply existing because our brains randomly decided, or saw something outlandish and impossible to make those fears manifest. The best thing we can do is expose ourselves to the fear and learn that nothing bad will happen. Alternatively, watch someone with the same fear as you make themselves suffer for your entertainment as a means of coping :)
I was watching a piece here on RUclips about the Titanic, possibly the "Honor and Glory" postings, and there was a shot (CG) from the point of view of passengers in the water as the ship broke apart and sank...lit potholes glowing under the water, the enormous ship looming over you, black bottomless ocean as far as you can see...I about passed out it was so scary.
Yo I saw that, it’s horrifying. The one that makes the shot of it in the film more realistic by removing artificial lighting and music is horrifying as well
@@mingalo2620you have a point. The relief I feel when I exit the water after my thalassophobia convinces me I'm about to be eaten, that shit is better than any drug

I'm about to go to bed and I'm literally scared that's gonna be in my dreams now. LMAO
Hey have you seen that one video where some guys are caving and then it starts raining really hard on top so the cave they're in starts filling with water? You would think that's the bad part but surprisingly no. One of them gets stuck for a while.
@@markay779 Was this the disaster that happened in like England when there was a sudden storm that created a flash flood that killed the cavers or was this a newer thing with spelunking youtubers?
@@AlottaBoulchit I don't think anyone died in the video I'm thinking of? Are you talking about the mossdale caverns incedent? That's the only one I remember off the top of my head that is similar to what you're talking about.
I think everyone inherently has a fear of darkness and of the unknown, there are no exceptions. BUT some people have both a fascination towards sealife and the self-taught ability to focus their minds. It's all in the mind. You need to focus on what you're doing, you can't afford to stay there and think about your fears if you really love to explore/swim/dive/encounter animal species etc.
I went on a blackwater dive in Hawaii. It is really freaking cool. At night the deep sea creatures migrate up, what you don't really see in the video are all the small things that are around you. Some of the things you see are also young versions of things you see on the reef they grow in the darkness to be safe from predator then go to the reef later in their lives.
I legit got struck by absolute, wild, raging panic watching the one about the underwater turbine and I was so shocked that I didn't even manage to watch the last video... thalassophobia really hits you hard when it does O_o
You know, I’ve never heard of this phobia but I believe I suffer from this 100% The ocean terrifies me and I don’t know why.. the unknown is too much for my brain. Thank you for making me feel normal ☺️
My thoughts exactly on the Killer Whales 😂 they are literally the bullies of the ocean and torture SHARKS to death. For some reason they say Killer Whales see Humans as kin or something like that.
No they just see us as too spindly to be worth the effort. Humans are apperantly not tasty to most animals but orcas can be especially judicious when hunting and only eat certain parts of their prey items and humans just don't have the visible fat content. Either way they are still wild animals and should be appreciated from a distance
Yeah there's no small fish out in the deep sea, even angler fish that always seem to be relatively small can grow to be about 7ft long so they can easily take a chunk out of a human if they so desired
They don’t get even half that big. Most of the things inhabiting the abyssal zones are very small, and only a fraction of larger things that go down there Feed.
Thalassophobia and Galeophobia here. I’ve have the latter from childhood due to an unfortunate shark encounter in Galveston TX. Didn’t realize I had Thalassophobia until I won a free cruise to the Bahamas. I had to be airlifted off the ship.
@@6LittleWendigo6 when I was small, we had an A-frame on the beach in Galveston with 2 other families. I went wade/surf fishing with my uncle and older cousin in about chest deep water. After we had caught fish , they put them on a stronger tied around their waist and we headed for the beach but suddenly a huge sand shark got between us and the beach. It was after the fish but it was moving up against me and it scared me so bad, I went into shock. They gave the fish to Mr Jaws and took me to the hospital. 1 week later , I saw the movie jaws.
Crazy story of how I developed my fear of pools, rivers, oceans, ext. So throwback to when I was 11! We were swimming in our pool in the backyard, keep in mind this pool was about 4-5 ft deep. And we had my 3 year old sister swimming with us.. she kept wanting to take her float devices off her arms, the only I can remember while having a panic attack, was seeing her hair floating from underneath the water… I was 11 and saved my 3 year old sister from drowning, paramedics were called, meanwhile I was sitting in the driving-way still shaking uncontrollably. I think I finally settled 4 hours later after I knew she was actually ok.. Still haunts me today, I’m also a weak swimmer so I’m very scared of deep water diving and never wanna try.. That’s the end of the story! Lemme know if anything happened like that to you.
Whitetip reef sharks are actually the most docile of sharks, they love to investigate divers up close but they Rarely will do anything. I think the only time they bite is when you attempt to take their fish/food from them and even then its a warning bite not a bite to do any fetal damage. As for the manta, many giant mantas can reach upwards of 23 feet or 7 meters across. The largest great white which was a female, measured at 21 feet, but this was decades ago in '88. On average they're only 11-15ft long (smallest being male and largest being female)
You're right. Whitetip reef sharks are really harmless unless you harrass it. However, Oceanic whitetips are a different story. The one in the video was an Oceanic.
@@tinaowens3772 The view difference is the oceanic has the whitetip fins and dorsal right? while the reef has just the dorsal tip white? ive seen both but i hadnt realized they were different. i guess i never paid attention
Yes, the Whitetip reef shark has only the dorsal and the caudal fins tipped in white. They are also considerably more slender than the Oceanics, which have the stout body of the more dangerous sharks. It's ironic, however, that the Latin name for the reef shark is Triaenodon obesus, meaning "obese shark" when it's really the skinnier one.
Also Oceanic White Tips were the first to arrive during the sinking of the USS Indianapolis and made up a large portion of the attacks, they were also the type of shark featured in Open Water.
Where did you get your info from? White tip are the sharks with most documented attacks on humans. I know people who dive and they say that if a white tip appears everyone is to get out of the water asap
The last 2 was too much for me. The eerie murkiness and the rough structures like the barnacle and cave walls. I can’t. My soul leaves my body seeing that.
I actually scuba dived with the giant fish in the first video, it’s called a Napoleon fish and the experience was really breathtaking, it was really calm and didn’t mind me swimming next to it
I never knew my fear had a name. I'm afraid of deep water, whether the ocean or a lake. What's weird about it is that I grew up on the beach in California and married a surfer. It developed over time, prob because of all the surfer talk about sharks, jellyfish, poisonous sea snakes, stepping on sea urchins, and getting drilled by coral. I always feel like there's something coming up underneath me that I can't see. So I stay where I can touch the bottom. As a teen, I used to go out on a small Hobie Cat on the ocean, and rode a boogie board. Would never do that now. I can't even look at these vids you're showing.
I was riding along the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico in Mississippi at night (in the winter), shining my light into the water, and there was no guard rail on the bike lane part of the board walk, I kept thinking about what would happen if I fell in, that water was murky and green and is notorious for bull sharks, I was stuck riding next to the ocean for about three miles in Bay St. Louis and I was freaked out the whole way. Just thought I'd share this here...
Anyone who thinks orcas aren't dangerous need to read "Survive the Savage Sea." That family's yacht got sunk in like a minute by orcas, they had to survive by eating sailfish and sticking saltwater up their asses. Fantastic book!
Obviously they can be dangerous, dogs have attacked and even killed people before, but they aren’t evil killing machines that people make them out to be. They have saved people before.
Was in Aruba snorkelling a shipwreck called the Antilla and the sheer amount of angst I got from looking down and seeing a giant rusted structure 100 feet down in the water while in the middle of the ocean terrified me to my core. I’ll never do it again.
11:56 FREAKED ME OUT. I'm not scared of water and I often swim in the sea since I live super close. I'm 100% sure that when it looked like they were suddenly in super deep water it's because *they were,* it's very common for there to be fairly steep, deep-ish (at least half a foot but probably more in this case) drop-offs right next to sandbanks and I'm pretty sure the force of the wave dragged them off into the deep water. Maaaybe just the angle but the mere idea of being pulled by a massive wave into deep water, unable to touch the bottom, scared the heck outta me LOL. EDIT: And the last one. It didn't freak me out so bad but it was definitely gross D:
last two ones are the ones that creeped me out the most,, i dont have a fear of the ocean, but seeing the size of that anchor (??) in the ocean just creeps me out,,, and the cave one feels claustrophobic more than anything,, its dark and creepy
i had seen the wind turbine one before, the part that got me was when he panned down and you could see so little of it! always interesting to see what shots freak other people out the most. what i wasn’t expecting was the last cave one! cave diving is the combination of my two worst fears, ocean and claustrophobia, so to see a dark underwater cave like that?!?! i was saying no out loud when i realized they were gonna put the camera underwater
Agree never realized I had claustrophobia until I watched cave videos, underwater or dry. I used to think it be pretty cool to go spelunking until I saw some videos of the tiny little spaces some of these crazy ass people try to squeeze through and said NOPE I'm good just staying out here in the open.
I knew I had some sort of fear of the deep sea and things in the ocean like logs n boats, but never realized it was full on submechanophobia until I started watching this channel LOL. I am truly terrified of the wind turbine underwater and i PANICKED watching it
I don’t necessarily have a huge fear of the ocean but somethings i do have a problem with the ocean/water is that you can’t escape as fast if something were to happen, when i went snorkeling in Hawaii i decided to look down and i seen a bunch of sea urchins 2ft underneath me and when i went to look directly below me water came into my breathing tube and i panicked lol. Also if i’m swimming i feel like something is just going to touch me whether it being a small fish or something big
That one at 18:59 freaks me out the most because there have been a lot of people who have been underwater cave diving/exploring who have died, and their bodies are so far out of reach that nobody can retrieve them (and some attempts to retrieve bodies have led to death as well).. they're just down there in some underwater tunnel for all of the rest of eternity.
What a way to be introduced to your channel.... I have an extreme fear of deep water, and I've been watching Dive Talk to try to alleviate that fear some since I love sharks and want to be able to swim with them some day. Sometimes their videos get to me, but oh man, almost all of these videos made me anxious to some extent. The influencer and manta ray videos didn't make me feel anything, the influencer one reminded me of when I went up to the top of Tokyo Tower and stood on the glass floor panels there. It was a really cool view to the pavement below, which almost triggered my fear of falling, but since the glass is 3 feet thick, it's highly unlikely to break, so it wasn't so bad. I'm not afraid of heights, just afraid of the weightless feeling of falling, having no control over the descent freaks me out, which I think plays into why I'm afraid of deep water. It's easy for large bodies of water to have currents too strong to fight, so I would get pulled in a direction I don't want to go, and that loss of control over my body's orientation in space is terrifying to me. Being on a boat in the ocean on choppy waters was actually fun to me, just like I find turbulence on a plane amusing. If I have something touching my body and grounding me in space, it makes the experience 1,000 times less anxiety inducing to me. Once I'm out in the water at the mercy of the waves, it's panic time, lol. Anyway, thanks for the anxiety inducing introduction to your channel, I'm definitely going to subscribe for more anxiety. 😅
Omg, I had NO idea this phobia had a name! I’m instantly very disturbed by images of deep waters, no land in sight as well as and especially giant sea creatures. I can’t believe it has a name 😂 I’m high and just realized that I probably shouldn’t watch this video.
I'm claustrophobic and nyctophobic but the thought of going in deep waters and seeing no end is making me extremely anxious and to think it's my dream to be in one of those shark cages too😭 but now I'm tripple guessing myself...
I call massive BS on the "there are no recorded cases of Orcas attacking humans in the wild". After the sinking of the Essex Whale Ship (which was attacked and sunk by a Sperm Whale btw) the crew of the ship were forced to scramble into tiny Whale Boats and attempt to sail to South America, which didn't go very well for them to say the least. At one point in their journey Captain George Pollard Jr.'s Whale Boat needed to be repaired so that it could stay afloat, because it was ATTACKED BY AN ORCA!!! Orcas may not knowingly attack humans very often, but I call BS on anybody who tries to say that it doesn't/never happens.
They most Definitely attack people. I'm pretty sure ive seen stories of people getting their kayaks or paddle boards Tipped by Orcas because theyre just massive assholes. I mean they even chase other sea creatures to the point they beach themselves. Naaah
I think he was just confused. There have been a few recorded attacks of orcas in the wild but no deaths. They haven’t killed people in the wild but there are a few cases of them attacking people most likely unknowingly because they leave.
Yea that statement isn’t true the actual fact is that there have never been any documented fatalities by orca in the wild. But the only (1) credible documented attack was likely due to mistaken identity (surfer swimming near seals), the orca took one bite, realized it’s mistake and left. Ur definitely right abt the “no recorded cases of wild attacks” bs but ppl shouldn’t be worried abt orcas actively hunting them or destroying their boats lol
i have been watching you for a few weeks now and i really like your voice it sounds relaxing. i have thalassophobia too but hearing your voice relaxes me. I also love your other non-thalassophobia vids. keep doing what youre doing!
I was thinking about the exact fear that this drums up and for me it’s the endlessness of the water and the certainty of what is in it. I think I can trigger everyone in the comments with thalassophobia with just a few words: imagine yourself in a small, one man pod that’s engineered to safely dive to the deepest parts of the Mariana Trench. You have a giant spotlight that’s able to illuminate 20 to 30 meters in diameter around your pod. As you touch down on the floor of the ocean, you flip on your light just in time to see what looks like the lower leg and foot of a creature that’s so large that it’s all you can make out. As it moves past you, the momentum of the creature causes your pod to rotate and the light is destroyed as you sit quietly at the bottom of the ocean in infinite darkness with only this Lovecraftian creature to keep you company.
frikin hell i have never been this frightened in my whole damn life this is more frikin scary than the Ring movie. damn that last scene is an eternal terror. nightmare.
I held my breath in the muddy water too because inside the water seems just like your actual eyes. 😫 as much as I have the phobia, I also wish I could overcome it to dive with wales and sharks. However I dream about it all the time and wake up sweating and almost having a heart attack.
@@gothgirl4evr782 I have always loved swimming and being in water, and this of course clashed with my Thalassophobia. In the beginning, I struggled with deep swimming pools, especially when I first started learning how to swim. I was scared a shark or piranhas would come and eat me as I was swimming, and I would be helpless. But the fear of pools disappeared as I got better and better and swimming and started doing it more. The ocean was a lot more difficult, especially since the Baltic ocean is very murky, at least close to the shoreline, and that's where I live. What helped me was swimming on the west coast of Sweden, where the water was a lot clearer, and the marine life more interesting. My parents also pushed me a lot, mentally, that is. In the beginning, it probably took me over 15 minutes to jump in, even with parents already in the water. Nowadays, I jump in first. But now I struggle with submechanopbia instead, and the Thalassophobia still exists some degree. But as long as I don't look straight down in water where I cannot see the bottom, I am fine :)

I'm pretty sure I have tripophobia because once I went swimming and there was some yellow coral full of holes and I started panicking.
I feel like watching AVNJ’s videos might help with your thalassophobia. He does lots of marine biology stuff and he breaks down and debunks those videos that are like “we’ve only seen 5% of our oceans” and “the megalodon is in the Mariana Trench” kind of stuff. Pretty interesting stuff.

The one that makes the shot of it in the film more realistic by removing artificial lighting and music is horrifying as well
Had my toes curled for the last two videos. Normally, they’re just eerie, but those two made me panic. And yet I eagerly wait for every video, lol

Okay, that picture of the glass of water with the noise cracked me up. Been awhile since I actually laughed out loud like that.
Your video was recommended and i thoroughly enjoyed it. You’re hilarious in a not trying hard type of way.
I was freaked out reading your comment omg I can picture it perfectly
i didnt expect that but i rly liked the way he described the wave seeming almost alive. it was kind of beautiful
Anyone who thinks orcas aren't dangerous need to read "Survive the Savage Sea." That family's yacht got sunk in like a minute by orcas, they had to survive by eating sailfish and sticking saltwater up their asses. Fantastic book!
the hell you mean sticking saltwater up their asses 🤣
Wait
Obviously they can be dangerous, dogs have attacked and even killed people before, but they aren’t evil killing machines that people make them out to be. They have saved people before.
Saltwater up their....? Hm ok
it was a rubber dinghy not a yacht 👁👁
Pls pls pls does anyone know the origin of the last video? that's the most terrifying video about thalassophobia I've ever seen
Right there with you!
Dive Talk is a good channel :)

Loving all your videos, I have Submechanophobia and had Thalassophobia, so these are always the ones I can enjoy and feel most
Question, you had Thalassophobia? Were you cured? If so please let me know how.
