yes, it is called "Five Long Years." JM blogged about it one time, long ago. He said it was a hypothetical song about what it would be to come home after failing in the music industry after five years. Luckily he never had to actually do that. He couldn't be farther away from that scenario, could he?
I feel like he didn't carry this song on because of its similarity to message in a bottle (which he covered in this era leading me to think there was some form of influence). But.. This really goes to show the importance of carrying a song through, regardless if it sounds like another song or not. He could have carried this on to make this at least a track on Inside Wants Out. Regardless, still a great song to put on while reflecting on life at 3 am
This song is about how he had been writing music own his own for "five long years".. if your a hardcore jm fan then i assume you know the story about when he was 17 and went to the hospital for cardiac arrhythmia or something like that.. anyways when he got home he was inspired to put pen to paper and write his first song in "94".. so the song is about his "five long years" battle with trying to get his music known and make it in the industry
jmforlife83 Wow i tought this song was written when John came back for Christmas from Berkley, then he decided to go to Atlanta with Clay Cook. But also I thinked about his back from hospital, I think that "Coming home after 5 long years, giving up after 5 long years" he refers to the begginig of High School and then the ending. He started at 12 and he graduated when he was 17 (5 years), I think that phrase "Giving up after 5 long years" refers to what people said about his music thinking, you know the kind of thing JM explains in No Such Thing.
isn't it funny how people change with time? He first claims that his greatest fear is that his old place will always be his home. But just 2 years later he says in 83' that he wants to go back to his place, but only it's not there anymore. Success does crazy things to people :P
@@LS-vg6iy well obviously it’s a great fan made documentary about him that I love, was just saying it wasn’t made in conjunction with John or anything 😂(which probably makes it more impressive tbh)
its not -exactly- the rhythm from message in a bottle, but there is definitely some influence there! this is my first time hearing it. thanks for the upload.
I was always sure it was telling the story of him failing in music. Which obviously didn't happen. And the "smiles worse than I told you so's" are his parents, who he's coming back to after he chased his dream and fell short.
viniawey I think its a kind of impro stuff that guitarrists do when they are going to play a song. You know, a melody that has nothing in common with the song, because that was a C and a D arpegiated, but the song is in B.
do a little research please haha.. he graduated in the spring of 1996.. his 18 birthday was october 16th, 1995.. which means he turned 18 in the fall of his senior year like many kids today... so he graduated in highschool in the spring of 1996.. This song is about the realation to the first song he ever wrote in 1994.. and how he had been writing music for 5 years.. and had recently been doing everything in his power to make his dreams reality.. and then came back home
I think this is the prequel to "83". It talks about the same subject matter(missing home) and the same music. That's cool to see how the song progressed.
"smell the last of her sweet perfume"... this song isnt about songwritting experiences of John, it is about someone's marriege and split! he doesnt have to have lived the experience to talk, sing, or write about it...

he could have Biebers level of success, but then again maybe not when he doesn’t make pop music
I know, I cried bad as soon as I heard it.
Then I really lost it when he says "Their smiles are worse than their I told you so's."
Man.
come back bro

This song sums up everything that is Mayer, the fact that he made song so beautiful about failing in the music industry, just so deep.
Anyone catch the foreshadow of "No Such Thing" at 2:07? Same chord progression
and message in a bottle directly after it haha
he posted this on his myspace, along with an early demo version of City Love.
this is quality, for sure.

The beginning of this song is in John mayers documentary
Well, it’s not actually a documentary made with him in collaboration, it was made by a fan
That’s how I got here
@@538-y6j well actually, it’s about John Mayer so it seems fair say it’s his documentary. Unless you have a more “credible” one to share with us.

@@LS-vg6iy I can't find the beginning song of that documentary. Could u help me ?
I know exactly why he never finished this song. It's basically just the Message in a Bottle riff! Still a super cool song!
Someday I’ll fly.
Anyone?
I gotcha ya
i immediately went to look for this as soon as i heard it in the video lmao
this is awesome! how have i never come across this?? haha
The compromise a man makes is understood and painful. I'm glad you found it and it found you. Much love to you brother.
Voice of an angel
I just took a shot at something. It didn't work out , and I had to come back home. I just now heard this so it kind of blows my mind.
I call this 'Five Long Years' on my itunes
and THAT is why I love the man. No discussion needed.
Its about how it would be like to fail as a musician (which his parents said he could never do) and come home five years later.
absolutely brilliant
i'm in love with it...
I listen to this song everyday.
It's amazing.
come back bro
If I were to give the song a title, I think I'd call it "After 5 Long Years". It's a really nice song.
I'd drop the "After"
This is really good.
its not -exactly- the rhythm from message in a bottle, but there is definitely some influence there! this is my first time hearing it. thanks for the upload.
That does make sense, he went to Berkeley after that so......yayeeee we finally get it :)
RE the theme of this song...I can so relate to every word he said. Anyone else?
By the way, this song is called 5 long years...
john mayer have really written many songs!!
♥️♥️♥️
@soulja187um the strumming pattern during the chorus is the same. nice pickup
this sounds like message in a bottle
@toosdedoos It sounds a hell of a lot better than 3 long years.
I was always sure it was telling the story of him failing in music. Which obviously didn't happen. And the "smiles worse than I told you so's" are his parents, who he's coming back to after he chased his dream and fell short.
Is that a song in the intro or just improv?

this is the rythm 2 message in a bottle by the police but the lyrics are hiss itss really good =]

Still trying to guess the chords and tabs for this one, if anybody knows, please tell me
what are the chords?
can you send me the mp3? i would love to have this!!! its beautiful
@toosdedoos It's the law of poetry, Lie to make the words rhyme.
this is awfull GOOD!! why wouldn't he release this song? and indeed I defenitly hear some james taylor influence there :)

Man...if only he would do stuff like this more. His recent album really disappointed me.
isn’t this the «Hotel bathroom song»?
I know the feeling. Dont have rich parents like shawn mendez does
