0:59 Idk why but every time I hear the chorus it makes me wanna cry. I can hear the pain in his voice as he sings it. The lyrics hit hard for me too cus I feel like it kinda mirrors my own thoughts when I'm wondering why I can't be a "free bird that can fly" and seems like everyone else is happier and more successful than me while I'm just a locked bird in a cage.

I come from a family where every single person gets aggravated over things like you saying “idk why” and there’s also social disorders and such. I don’t think I'm like that anymore because I distanced from my family. If you listen carefully after grandson says "he tells me..." you can hear the voice of X in the background, that's some cool detail!
he can also be heard towards the ending when grandson says “and i watch these birds fly, and i cry why cant i why cant i”
So I googled it, as I had a sneaking suspicion by looking at the lyrics 'he gets me high', and 'X' is another name for methylenedioxymethamphetamine, more commonly referred to as 'ecstasy'. For me this brings a whole new meaning to the song. He laments about the birds flying and 'why can't I?'. Ecstasy is a hallucinogenic, which could possible explain 'he tells me lies' and 'I think he's taking over', referring to the addiction. 'It's poison' could also be a reference to the damage drugs can do to you, causing nausea, increased body temperature, and tremors among many. 'I look to the left and I find him right there' could suggest the hallucinations that the user may feel. If grandson or anyone is suffering from this disease- as addiction is a disease, I support you, and it may be comfort to know that there are people that can help, you are not alone.
Anyway that's just my interpretation :)

Easily my favourite song in this album, amazing.
This song helped me so much talking to my persecutor alters this winter and figuring out what they really wanted, and as the host of the system, I heavily related to the perspective given of the optimist. Thank you for writing this and just this album in general. We were finally able to communicate so much more to my therapist and get the treatment we needed.
If anyone else is struggling with persecutor alters please know they are misguided protectors, they usually think they're going something good for the system in the long run even if its harmful.
