I feel like he's saying he won't take his life because suicide isn't the answer despite all the chaos around him, life is still somehow worth pushing through, even though he knows he hardly has hope for it. He'd rather just drop dead and stop existing than end it himself, which is, in a weird way, giving life a chance, though having no expectations or hope of it ever getting easier.

Damn, this song has a a seriously interesting message. I may be wrong, but let me take a stab at it.
At first, I thought it was a classic grandson song about how tough life is, and for a good portion it is easy to think so. then you get to three lyrical lines.
"Rather drop dead than be a quitter"
"put it all on red"
"Don't let go, Don't give up so easy"
put together, "Keep going till you can't any more, go for the long shot with everything you have, and never let go of dreams because you can't get discouraged so easily."
the rest of the lyrics outline the difficulties that can be faced in life, the reasons you should give up, and the difficulties of achieving your dreams.
This song is about accepting your short comings, going for that impossible dream anyway, and sticking with it till you get there or you "drop dead"

To me, Death Of An Optimist is about resurrecting optimism in a time where it may seem unlikely that we will make it through.
