Still incredibly helpful 8 years later! I'm now confident in reupholstering all the armrests in my old Civic, which are looking pretty ratty these days.
I would have to say that you and Matt are my favorite people on this channel. Very professional and well explained videos on mostly relevant topics. You two keep me coming back!
I wasn't sure how french seams worked prior to watching this video. I'm sure there were tutorials out there on just that. But it's much more entertaining to learn it when it involves an off road rig. Great video!
watch these videos for information and inspiration on my 4x4 project, but this is the first time I actually felt like I may have actually learned something. fabrication and auto mechanics are not foreign to me, but this was really well put together and informative. thank you very much
I've watched a lot of videos on this channel, but I must say this was one of the most informative I've ever seen. I had never really considered upholstery as a project that I was able to do and this made me think otherwise. Great video!
Matt the quality of your video's have gone up substantially since you first introduced yourself here on this channel. I'm really liking them. sick arm rest!
+Tyler Bleepinjeep absolutely, I mean in all honesty anyone can wrench and figure out how things bolt together but this is on a different level, impressive work Tyler, happy trails 👍
+ Tyler Bleepinjeep Great job! Do you do this for a living? I would like to learn how to do this stuff but I don't know where to start. Any suggestions?
Woah! That was really amazing. Looks great! You are very good at giving instructions. Nice, easy to follow video, Tyler! Keep the upholstery videos coming...
Tyler, it's no wonder you have 235K subscribers. Excellent work. Excellent narration. And as stated in the many comments below great mix with the music. Well done! P.S. Hilarious Disclaimers~. :)
Love the video. Great work. Since your so good at upholstery and carpentry, try making a video on how to build a center console or something with seat covers. I would love to see that!
Nicely done mr Tyler very well done n very nicely explained god bless u for ur knowledge This clip going to help me a lot to complete my car console on which I’m working right now Thankz
I was just watching and realized that you were turning on your compressor in the one shot. swap the switch out for one of those timer knobs that will make it so that you won't find your compressor running a week later
Nice job!! One question. Since you routed out the groove to push the edging down in, couldn't you do basically the same thing for the corners also?? Sure wish I had your skills...
yes, I would do that if I could do it over again. I planned on doing the corners differently in the beginning. Fabrication is never an exact science. As Matt likes to say, its a lot of problem solving. Good thinking on your part.
So it would work.. I thought maybe it would make the corners too weak or something.. I suppose a furniture grade plywood would be best though.. Best gluing and zero voids... Again, nice job!!
You made it look too easy. Im doing exactly the same thing but with laether material. Mine came out too tight on one side and bulging on another side. Lol not sure what i did wrong.
you do beautiful work! I greatly appreciate your videos question I need a material that is rugged (4 wheeling suv), soft, not sun blinding, and preferably sound deadening, do u have any suggestions?
is that a jigs staple gun?? i cant use one of them because when i turn the gun around to pound staple stubbles down i always dump all the staples out i use senco at my work at good ole smith brothers furniture
This was a scrap piece I salvaged from an archery target, but its called "EVA" foam. If you do an internet search, there's several places that sell it in various thicknesses.
Even with the volume all the way up , I can still barely hear you ..... Time to break out the headphones ... Can you use a regular sewing machine for something like this , or do you need one designed specifically for upholstery work ?
You can use a regular sewing machine if you can get the stitches long enough and if it can handle the thread and material thickness. A good choice would be a Pfaff or Juki machine.
wow! cat gut hasn't been used for decades. That's pretty cool. The thread you want to use is called "Bonded Polyester" and you'll want something in the TEX 90 size. You may also see DB92 as roughly the same size.
The racing seats that Matt put in the Scorpion have French seams on them and I wanted to match the seats to tie the interior all together. I'll show you guys how to sew a welt (piping) sometime down the road though.

Turned out awesome. So much chill in your video's, relaxing and informational!
I noticed the same thing.

Nice work. Yes, more upholstery videos, please.

Awesome, I'm going to do something like this in my RV-8 airplane that I'm building. Thanks for the tutorial!!
Tyler and Matt, more videos from you guys please!
Hell of a job
Great info. Very easy to follow for a total upholstery noob like myself.
Tyler, it's no wonder you have 235K subscribers. Excellent work. Excellent narration. And as stated in the many comments below great mix with the music. Well done! P.S. Hilarious Disclaimers~. :)
Very, very cool. Thanks for sharing this!
excellent craftsmanship!
Thanks!
Makes you want to order something custom made from you. Well done video!
Best video on the channel in a while
Love the video. Great work. Since your so good at upholstery and carpentry, try making a video on how to build a center console or something with seat covers. I would love to see that!
I will be doing some videos on seat covers down the road. I have to redo the seats in Project Tetanus.
That is amazing... I dont even know how you did it; and I watched the whole thing!
a fine piece of work, excellent.
Nicely done mr Tyler very well done n very nicely explained god bless u for ur knowledge
This clip going to help me a lot to complete my car console on which I’m working right now
Thankz
Great video! Looks awesome. I would love to see more of this.
Very cool. That router channel is a great tip.
Nice work man, plus very professional video.
Damn you are talented man! Props to you
Beautiful made. It looks like my armrest without led light
Awesome work! And great video!!
Wow awesome job! Professional look. Just one little thing, the audio is A little low in this video. thanks again
Great craftsmanship sir, curious on what a budgetary price would be for this armrest
Nice job! It worted a lot!
Please make a video on how to make a shift boot and how to recover an XJ steering wheel. That would be so cool!!!
awesome job.
Awesome! Really interesting tutorial!
That was a very good video. Thank You.
Great work but added layer of glue to mold while stapling would have been a nice touch
Damn you do nice work!
Thanks!
Awesome video man. Thanks very much for making this :)
No worries!
Upholstery with Bob Ross.
What is the high density closed cell foam made of? I see different materials online.
I was just watching and realized that you were turning on your compressor in the one shot. swap the switch out for one of those timer knobs that will make it so that you won't find your compressor running a week later
that was actually a shot of me turning the sewing machine off. Sorry for the confusion but you're right about the compressor!
What kind of nail gun did you use? Looks great
you should open an upholstery shop called "upholstery fabrication" lol
Can you tell me what kind of black foam that is? I would be so appreciative!!
bring back sasquatch..you guys are great together..
That was a really fucking good vid man!
Nice job!! One question. Since you routed out the groove to push the edging down in, couldn't you do basically the same thing for the corners also?? Sure wish I had your skills...

I don't lika jeep, i hate Trump, but the mix of your voice and the music was so relaxing, that it turned out that I subscribed to your channel.
Awwwsome.
Isnt that a Felled (fallen) seam not a French seam? A french seam would have the seam ends inside a pocket of the seam allowance.
Wow!!
you do beautiful work!
I greatly appreciate your videos
question I need a material that is rugged (4 wheeling suv), soft, not sun blinding, and preferably sound deadening, do u have any suggestions?
What kind or brand is that stapler?
What staple gun are you using?
Very good vid. Did you go to school or teach yourself?
I guess you could say I apprenticed. I worked for a small upholstery shop all through highschool. He taught me the fundamentals and I went from there.
is that a jigs staple gun?? i cant use one of them because when i turn the gun around to pound staple stubbles down i always dump all the staples out i use senco at my work at good ole smith brothers furniture
It's actually a BEA 123 that I picked up from a pawn shop for $20. I had to replace the buffer but it's been the best staple gun I've ever used.
Do you have a link to the base foam you used? I'm having a hard time selecting the foam for my project.
This was a scrap piece I salvaged from an archery target, but its called "EVA" foam. If you do an internet search, there's several places that sell it in various thicknesses.
Can you please tell me where to buy the foam in your video?
Thanks
This was a piece from an archery target, but its called "EVA" foam. You can buy it online from several places if you do a google search for it.
where can I purchased one
Even with the volume all the way up , I can still barely hear you ..... Time to break out the headphones ... Can you use a regular sewing machine for something like this , or do you need one designed specifically for upholstery work ?
I have a kenmore from the 50s that I use for work like this.
You can use a regular sewing machine if you can get the stitches long enough and if it can handle the thread and material thickness. A good choice would be a Pfaff or Juki machine.
+Tyler Bleepinjeep I got an old singer peddle type my great grandma used to make seat covers for A models back in the 40s
+Nick Vandiver the book says use some kind of thread called cat gut but I was told it's like fishing line
wow! cat gut hasn't been used for decades. That's pretty cool. The thread you want to use is called "Bonded Polyester" and you'll want something in the TEX 90 size. You may also see DB92 as roughly the same size.
How much $$ for that job?
It lOOks bitchin',very nice job.I was curious why you didn't want to use piping on your seems. It still lOOks sweet anyway, just curious...
The racing seats that Matt put in the Scorpion have French seams on them and I wanted to match the seats to tie the interior all together. I'll show you guys how to sew a welt (piping) sometime down the road though.
+Tyler Bleepinjeep That would be awesome! Outstanding work brother!
First!
great video, your channel was starting to go downhill
