    Starting with phase allignment a great suggestion. But what about gain staging? At what level do you set your drum tracks before applying eq and compression? Some people like to normalize their drum tracks to -6, -10 or -12 dbFS. I would like to learn your approach to this because you are mostly using analogue emulations to mix drums such as NLS and EV2.
    Great channel by the way! Keep going.

    • @incognitiveincognito
      @incognitiveincognito 11 месяцев назад +3

      Gain staging is more so just understanding how the input and output gain at each stage (be that an effect, send, aux, bus, etc) will effect your sound. It doesn't matter what you normal your drums to as long as it will interact well with whatever you are sending it into at that volume. For example some compressors don't have an adjustable threshold so you would compensate for that by going into the compressor with the appropriate gain to have the threshold hit where you want it to and using make up gain on the output to increase or decrease the volume appropriately. Or if a plug in is really noisy you may want to send a hotter signal through so the noisefloor is as low as possible compared to the signal because if you send a quite signal through and boost it after you will get a lot more noise than the other way around.

    Can the In Phase plugin be used during the recording process? Let's say I was sending the output of my DAW to a live stream, if I corrected the phase of my drum tracks and the mics always remain in the same location, theoretically the phase correction shouldn't change, right?

    I have a question when do you setup your nls do you set it up in the mix or you set them up in solo?

    • @musictechnologytipsandtricks
      @musictechnologytipsandtricks  Год назад

      Generally I start in solo, to hear exactly the amount of THD I am after, although it is while mixing that I find tune.
      Ps if you want to find out more about NlS check this video I made walking thru Non Linear Summing ruclips.net/video/y4NTev678_4/видео.html

    I want to start mixing out of the box to get that analog color and nice high roll off. What should I start with. Preamp, Eq, compressor. If I can get some guidance that will be great. Thanks.
    I understand that there are a whole lot of analog gear and they each have thier purpose and can be genre specific, vocal or percusion specific as well. So anything to start me up would be great. I am going to mainly work on hip hop and pop. Some live here and there (rarely). Thank you.

    • @incognitiveincognito
      @incognitiveincognito 11 месяцев назад +1

      I dont have much analog experience but almost universally the biggest thing I he e when it comes to analog vs digital is compression. I have heard countless engineers say they have a certain compression unit because they could not find a digital compressor that emulated the tone or ballistics of certain hardware units. EQ would probably be lowest on the list as digital vs analog comes down almost entirely to just the additional distortion from the hardware which could be emulated with any ITB eq and saturator.

    • @9fruitstudios276
      @9fruitstudios276 11 месяцев назад

      @@incognitiveincognito Appreciate your response. Yeah, I noticed that many would prefer to get a compressor as the first piece of hardware equipment.

    • @musictechnologytipsandtricks
      @musictechnologytipsandtricks  6 месяцев назад

      That’s almost irrelevant in this context. With that said normal recordings level I tend to use range between -18dbFS and -16dbFS

    is there a way I can send you a drum track to have it mixed like this? I can't seem to get it sounding right., let me know thanks

    • @RMHendrickson
      @RMHendrickson 2 месяца назад

      You always want to mix your drums in context of the song. Sending just the drums to be mixed is pointless. You could have drums that sound fantastic on their own, but get lost when brought back in with the other instruments. Mixing is all about balancing every element so that they work together.

    • @BlackWaterCanyon
      @BlackWaterCanyon 2 месяца назад

      @@RMHendrickson well I would send in the song track in stereo with no drums and then the drum tracks separately. That’s what I was implying.

    • @RMHendrickson
      @RMHendrickson 2 месяца назад +1

      @@BlackWaterCanyon That still doesn't work. You want to mix everything at the same time. Mixing them alongside a stereo track of other mixed tracks is never going to sound as good as doing it all together. My advice to you is to watch more mixing tutorial videos and practice.
