Hi everyone, This video is the 1st, in the series of 4 videos on How a garment collection is designed. I am creating this series on request, by Irem and Sherlly. This is long pending as I was traveling last month. I am going to briefly explain the stages of the design process from research to the detailed tech pack which will be later submitted to a manufacturer. Today's video is about "how to do trend research" .
When you think of designing a collection of garments, you need to be aware of latest trends in colors, fabrics, styling details etc. This is the first step in the whole process. I will show you some of the easy ways to get information on the trends.
Trend research is basically for opening your mind to create new stuff according to what people are liking around the world. This will take you out of isolation and help your creative juices flow. You may get inspired by anything and everything around you. Trend research will guide you to narrow down all the ideas which are popping in your head.
Now, Where do we start? Start from searching on Google. You can type anything regarding fashion, google will give you hundreds of options to look through.

Subscribe to online trend report like â  patternbankâ  â  Promostylâ  â  WGSN" I will leave a link in the description box. Be part of fashion groups on LinkedIn, Google+, Facebook, twitter. Pinterest is the great place for inspiration. On social media follow well-known designers, fashion bloggers, brands. You can look at latest magazines, books. (Show my book collection) Visit a library, thrift markets. Start observing a group of people on the street, their way of dressing. Movies can be a great inspiration. When I was in college, there used to be movie watching assignments. Watch a movie and write about the costumes. This goes same for museums, and art galleries.
Gather all your inspiration and put them all together into a board. Take printouts from the internet, collect fabric bits, if you like a button or a lace grab them,tear pictures from a magazine, take photographs of architecture, nature. Collect everything and make an "inspiration board". You can create different boards for colors, fabrics, styles, trims. but I prefer putting all of them on one board. It can be as big or small as you want. pin it on your wall or keep it on your computer. whichever is convenient for you to look at.
Your research is done. You can add or remove things from your inspiration board until the time you finalize on the design ideas.

Arpitha I watched all these videos but in these videos part 1 research which book in ur hand I cannot see properly take a close up that book and explain it with example sothat I can understand proerly and plz help me . I want to make a garment for me in wedding ceremony of my family and start work.
That book was just for an example. I will look at the name and tell you anyway. You can look up online for many color inspirations. I will try and make more detailed video for you :-)

Are you planning to get into fashion industry after your btech? If you want to do masters in fashion abroad, you can try London school of fashion. Try to look for some colleges in Italy too. Google for them. All the best.

Hello Ma'am... How do you incorporate prints in the final garment?
Hi Bindu, There is a recent video on how I get inspired to create a garment (design process) in which you can see the print used as a graphic design on a t-shirt (ruclips.net/video/MRKCZVJz9lI/видео.html). There is a video on how to draw on Adobe illustrator. The process of developing print is the same as I have shown in the illustrator video (ruclips.net/video/wkgtzdvBlNc/видео.html) Watch both the videos and try to create a print by yourself. I am sure you will get it.

I am so happy that you learned from my video :-) According to me, fashion goes in circles. Trends are picked from past and improvised to get a new trend for the present. Let me know if you have any video request.
In this video you explained put all the collective data in one desk and then executive your idea. Please explain how you will judge whether this pattern will work or not and then please explain your thought process.
When you are collecting trend, you will see repeating style detail which everyone is talking about (For example, take the detail "Frill") Every trend report site is showing that particular detail. Every celebrity is including that particular detail in their garment and so on. From this, you will know what is a trending detail. I will create a video explaining my thought process soon.

books mujhe inta pataa nehi hai. Jo bhi college library mein the utna hi access tha. But, as you have google to search any doubt of yours do you really need books? 🤔 For many years, meraa padaai google se hi hota hai 😃
