- Over the last several decades, a growing number of Americans have chosen to spend more time and money on swimming pools. Most pools can be found in California, Texas and Florida, but population growth in other Southern states is escalating the demand for pool construction and supplies. Pool Corporation, one of the largest pool supply distributers, has seen its stock price soar. Already in 2021, people are opening up their pools 20-30% earlier in the year than they did in 2020, which means they will need more chemicals and supplies to keep their pools swimmable. For now, demand is pretty strong.
The backyard pool has become a big moneymaker.
A combination of factors has been fueling the trend for years. Many Americans are moving to the suburbs, migrating to warmer states and increasingly looking to make their own yards better places to spend time in.
Retailers and distributors such as Leslie’s and Pool Corp. are aiming to conquer the large and growing pool supply market, which offers pretty steady revenues from consumers trying to keep their pool water from turning green.
There are some short-term challenges - including a shortage of chlorine tablets resulting in part from a large fire at a plant in Louisiana that has created a chlorine shortage constricting supply and raising prices.
Longer term, pullbacks in the housing market could restrict new pool construction. But once a house has a pool in the backyard, the most economical thing to do is maintain it, so companies who bet on maintenance are likely to see steady sales.

I live in Arizona and can wholeheartedly say: Pools are a waste of space and cash. High cost for maintenance/electricity. They also take up your whole yard if you have an average home. The main groups who love them are out-of-towners and kids under 12. Like a boat, its better if your friend has one.
As a short term rental investor we plan on adding a pool to a house we just bought. I was worried reading your comment, till you said out of towners love them, which is exactly our target market.

@@DewTime 100%! A pool is amazing for vacations when you are wanting to hang around the house! It's just not worth it when you have to work everyday etc and don't get to enjoy the pool more than 1-2x a month. You also may want to look into a hot tub. Way cheaper to install/maintain, but a big draw for anyone vacationing in the winter. They aren't gonna use the pool half the year anyway, and people usually visit the desert in the winter, so it may be a cheaper way to increase value

Hot tubs are the best of both worlds. Low maintenance and you can have a great time anytime of year in them. Speaking from experience

Bought a house with a nice pool. I jump in pretty much every day of summer and love it. Bbq by the pool and have outdoor tv. Not nearly as expensive as these comments make it seem 😂
You likely live somewhere warm, where you don't have to heat the pool to make it bearable to swim in, don't you? The heat is where most of the cost comes from, in my opinion.

I’m living the dream but am a very active person. Most people I understand wouldnt utilize a pool and I would not pay to add one. But if buying a house and it has pool cost are manageable IMO. If I had to pay to warm it, wouldn’t do it
Changing water weekly, Cleaning is biggest time sucker.
Better go to some outside, enjoy different types are pool 😉
@@prestonthomas5399 I live in Ontario Canada. Heating pools is extremely expensive and the winter wreaks hell on them. It's a lot of work shutting the pool down in the winter. I've helped my elderly neighbour and they're downsizing at this point. They'd like to age in place but they'd have to rip out the pool and he doesn't have the heart to do it.
It's a shame. Back when we used to rent an apartment the building had a pool and I swam laps every morning for 9 years. I miss it but the it's just too expensive here. Generally speaking, houses with pools are a tough sell in a lot of Canada. So even if you pay out the nose to build a pool in your backyard, you might be lowering the value of your home unless you find the right buyer.

Comments like this are so ridiculous! "There will be a day when there's no water for the pool." How do you know this? Where are your facts? You're just making general comments like an old man from back in the day, "One day rotary phones will not be available and we will all die from zero communication." Wha? Just like there was life after rotary phones vanished there will be other options to fill a swimming pool. - - I'm going to humor you. What if you are right and in 5 years there is no water for pools? Are you going to come back on RUclips and say, "HA! I WAS RIGHT!!! All of y'all didn't listen. Now you have big concrete holes in the ground." - - When you make comments like this what do expect to accomplish?

Personally I hate backyard pools now, I was so excited to get a pool in my yard but when we did get one on man do I regret it now. First of all you need a big budget it’s not cheap and second the maintenance man too much time to clean that thing all the time. If you hire someone to clean it for you haha good luck at their cost for their services. Thank god I moved to another house during pandemic and I am definitely never ever getting a pool again. I rather pay membership fees for gyms that has pools coz even those are cheaper than maintaining your own pool..
I don't own a pool but I would like to. If you do the maintenance Yourself it can't be that bad

Many housing complex or gated communities have clubhouse with nice pool and gym inside. No need to have pool at your backyard. The maintenance is hassle……
I’m having a pool put in. The company is taking orders now but can’t even start to break ground until 6 months later. One company I called was so busy they just told me no thanks we don’t want your business right now we’re so busy.
Sorry to hear of this. Most people put in pools to increase the value of their property. I no longer swim because we need to conserve our water supply globally. I didn't comment to put down your decision. I don't buy bottled water either, because of plastic and water. I use purifier for my water needs. I do hope you use a pool cover to decrease water evaporation. I hope you have a wonderful day/evening.

Pools are a pain and having ppl over ends with a cloudy pool sometimes, but I will never buy another house without one! But my one wish is converting my pool to salt and make sure you have an automated pool vacuum with brushes saves a ton of time
Salt pools are cool. I used to open pools in the spring and the salt pools were always crystal clear and clean while the chlorine pools were green and slimy.

For sake of saving money, if your kids wants to play in a pool, just spend $300 to a nice beach side hotel for a day. Everyone in the family will enjoy it, include yourself!

I used to maintain my parents’ pool growing up - I would test the pH and chlorine daily (calcium-based chlorine tends to precipitate out more than sodium-based chlorine; some commercial pools use salt), clean the filter and replace the diatomaceous earth, sweep and use the net to clear it of leaves, etc. I noticed that my arm muscles developed while doing all of this
In the winter, pools quickly turn green if not maintained properly - there is a deal of work associated with a pool
I have problems with my joints and just started going to the pool regularly. I plan on getting a pool when I buy a house next year.

I have a pool since it came with the house and I am pretty surprised how easy it is to maintain. The video is right that there is so much automation! Your vacuum, auto filter and pump do most of the work. I really expected it to be difficult and pretty expensive but it has been ok so far. Hopefully, it stays like that.
We live in North Texas where HOAs are the norm. We have a large nicely appointed community pool, and most of my neighbors have pools. My family visits the pool a few time a week and typically have the pool to ourselves. HOA cost $1k annually with no other cost such as pool maintenance incurred by many of our neighbors. I think we made the right decision to not get a pool when we purchased our home.
How necessary was it to define this out door living?

**I do agree pools can be a money pit but if you do things right and get a variable speed pump, don’t go overboard with extras and you get a pool which increases your home’s value. Variable Speed pumps cost 75%+ less to run than normal pool pumps. I personally had my house built and 3 years after because I had a 3 year old at the time, I had a pool built on and I do admit that it was used multiple days a week for the first 3 months, then it was holidays and birthdays only - yet still well worth it as we used that whole ‘outdoor space’ as family space. So if you want a pool - BUILD ONE… If you think pools are money pits and not worth it, DON’T BUILD ONE…. Very simple 😎

Owning a pool is like owning a boat or a horse. Constant money pit, but if I was going to choose, I would choose a pool. I feel like you would get more use out of it. Especially if you live in Florida.

People screaming about having to maintain the pool is like someone crying about high electricity costs just because they want to keep their lights open 24*7 so the house is lit. No that's not how it works. Pools should only be used for summertime and when that's over, the water should be drained and the pool should be covered, atleast that's the sensible way to do things, Americans over inflate everything and cry about rising costs and maintenance, you hyped and overused it in the first place
I live in Miami so my pools open all year long even if I wanted to drain it for the winter I couldn’t. The ground is so soft here the weight of the pool water is what is holding the structure in the ground.
All these comments are about how pools are big money pit and well that isn’t entirely wrong, some of my favorite memories with my family were spent in the pool. We use ours everyday! We do drain and cover it up in the off season as well

As someone living in a town with 2 public pools and actually 0 private ones (at least the buried ones), I find the title misleading.

Suburban backyard pools are like backyards themselves: A pain in the a** to maintain, and kids outgrow them by the age of about 8. Unless you can afford to have an Olympic swimming pool in your backyard and staff to maintain it, it's better to have a tiny backyard with no pool, but make sure to live near a public park and a public pool with much more space.
I mean, I tried to swim laps in my dad's pool when I was a teenager, but even then I knew it was kind of sh*t.
I just realized that the rich suburban neighborhood I live in now has relatively few pools.
If you get into the pool do do anything more than just chilling out with a beer or something, you need to go to a full-on water park.

LESL has a -0,4 billion usd equity and a 0,8 billion usd debt... How are they still not bankrupt?! They also have expenses (of 0,33b) that are way higher than earnings (77mil). That shows bad expenses management and excessive spending on, potentially, irrelevant stuff. Because they do have good revenue of 1,2 billion usd. Do better Leslie's, do better.
I prefer hot tub and “endless pools” much smaller and less maintenance
Pretty weak article, doesn't explain why people are going for pools now or how the intense summer heat from climate change is forcing people to jump into their pools sooner, or the financial pressures that force more people into "Staycations" than ever before. Pools can be a hindrance to some when it comes time to sell, also for several reasons. Also the cost of liability for having a pool, to the increased property taxes if you have a built in pool. There is a lot of things to think about before your dive into a pool in your back yard.

So many haters in these comments. If the initial cost, sunk cost and ongoing maintenance aren’t worth it to you, then don’t get a pool. If those three things sound manageable, you’ll turn your yard into a great source of fun and entertainment for family and friends, especially if you live in the Southern US.
Don’t buy a pool if:
-you have to finance it
-you are depending on getting that money back when you sell the house, because you won’t
-if a random $300 trip to the pool store once or twice a year will break your budget
If you can stomach those three things, you’ll be fine. 34k gallon vinyl lined, true L pool with a Hayward TC-15 and variable speed pump… best money we’ve ever spent! Makes it possible to enjoy the weekend when the sun is beating down in the middle of the North Carolina summer.

Bought a pool a few years ago, gave it away last year. Useless POS just draining my wallet and destroying my yard.
I live in third world country and i haven't seen a single home with swimming pool, even the riches prefer to have flower gardens or some chicken/quail dens in their backyard. It's not that we have no money to build it, we just don't want to spend on unnecessary things, same with lawn with nothing but grass on it
Love pools. At least it's sanitary unlike oceans. Most people don't realize how much ecoli and human feces they are now swimming by from sewage overflow from us breeding too much on US shores. Gotta go to islands to avoid it now. 👍

There should be more consideration for natural pools, which implements filtration through plants. The water can still be maintaned but it's ecologically valuable to birds, insects, and amphibians. Why not incorporate natural pools and benefit nature?
