Grabbed by the Ghoulies is, quite honestly, one of the top ten most enjoyable games we've ever played. It's critical reputation is one of the greatest injustices in the history of video games. Don't you guys worry though: The game doesn't just have fans... it has DEVOTEES. Anybody who hasn't would be well advised to run out and buy Rare Replay. Ghoulies alone is more than worth the thirty dollars.
Banjo-Kazooie alone is worth it. 👀
And to be honest, I know a lot of people hated this too, but I ADORE nuts and bolts.

I remember playing this game when I was very little. This game was AMAZING I LOVED IT AS A KID I would be so happy if they would bring this game back with a remastered
Why just as a kid? Play it as a teenager/adult and try and get platinum on all the mini games, then play the secret mini game 21 and you can speed run the game as amber. It’s just as fun if not more
The #1 reason this game failed is because it was a new IP in a time when most Rare fans just needed a familiar face to convince them that Microsoft and Rare's new partnership wouldn't be so bad.
Trust me, if this came out on Gamecube (or at least after a solid Banjo or Conker Xbox game), it would not have been ignored the way it was.
Same with Nuts and Bolts. It really is a great game but it's not what Rare needed to make at the time. I have a sneaking suspicion that Rare hasn't been completely honest in these videos, and left out of the development stories any time Microsofr made them do something, namely changing Banjo Threeie to a vehicle game.

@@BananaMana69 Nuts and Bolts isnt a bad game. It was just released at a very bad time and shouldnt have used the Banjo IP. As a game on it's own it's good.
Yeah a traditional Banjo Threeie, then this would have been fine...although Rare followed up Donkey Kong Country 3 with Blast Corps...that was their first Nintendo 64 project...yeah I'm not forgetting about Killer Instinct Gold but it's an arcade port not a game made specifically for the Nintendo 64.
Please, I just want a sequel. It's truly one of my favorite titles of all time. I wish for it so badly.
Most underrated Rare game ever. Sure, the characters and their speech were annoying, but the gameplay, combat, destruction physics, and art style were fantastic. I was real surprised when I noticed Rare did more than just rerelease the Xbox ISO of the game onto Rare Replay, and actually restored it in glossy hd quality. It made the game even more fun to look at. I really hope Rare can give Conker Live and Reloaded the same HD treatment, along with restoring the glitches and bugs that occurred when emulating the game on an Xbox 360.

I was rather fond of the rainbow particles, heheh. The occasional freeze wasn't all too great, though.

Abe Samayoa both Perfect Dark, KIG, bit of Kameo(I blame Deep Blue for that) are my fav Rare Replay games. I would add GBTG buuuut that freaking Trophy Room gets to me...

+Answ3red Pr4y3rz lol i remember the bathroom level in wich the timer of the grim reaper was shorter than the door timer. That was the most scary for me :)
All i remember is my older cousins handing me the controller and having me play the part with tons of skeletons in the room and a pool table (I would always use that as a weapon) but after i killed everything else the reaper came and for some reason scared the hell out of me lol.
+Leer.CCIII I think we were all scared "to death" by the grim reaper. But that bathroom bit was terrifying. The worst for me was Gwenyth, the freaky lady you jumpscares you at the window in the greenhouses and the potting room
I love how Rare talks like they're proud of this game, instead of bummed, because it was one of their worst sellers. The game itself wasn't bad, Microsoft just didn't do much to help promote it, nor did they do the same with Conker Live and Reloaded, Kameo, or Perfect Dark Zero...
+SpongicX It's always Microsoft's fault isn't it? Always fishing for it, why don't you kick some reviewers up the old bum that wend through great lengths to put it down because it wasn't "AMERICA! FUCK YEAH!" shooter number 25. Microsoft could have done a better job... sure. But let us not wash our hands in innocence to what gaming culture as a whole did to this game and Nuts and Bolts.
+DehnusNorder I think one of Rare's issues was that they would work on too many projects at once. Man power was split up projects had development issues (Kameo & PDZ), plus conflicting creative differences.
+MrReyno Tanks Yeah but that has nothing to do with why this game was treated as badly as it was. Heck in N&B they filled a Trashcan with it as a joke. Reviewers at the time found that soooooo funny.
The thing is this game was fun and addictive to play, it was just stillborn due to reviewers and gaming culture just not wanting to accept such a game on the Xbox Platform and I'm happy that it gets another chance. The "It's kiddy!" call has weakened these days, but you see it return sometimes on Sites like n4g were these armchair quarterback developers bash Nintendo for their art choices.
But all things considered: THey are rigth, GBTG holds up VERY well even to these day, just in HD resolution it already looks so sharp and sleek that the art style (also the choice Nintendo usually makes) is a great choice.

+SpongicX I liked this game but I cannot deny it isn't one of their best titles and it was released at a very bad time just being bought by Rare competing on a console where the Xbox sold Sports games and First Person Shooters, while trying to compete with Nintendo. At the same time, while its not a gem it does have a charm to it and I have beaten everything in the game and every challenge except, "Play it again, Son!" The game is fun and enjoyable, but starts to lose its appeal when it gets repetitious. If they had more time to work on this and add more content it could have been a masterpiece. It was pretty close but just not there.
Rare, PLEASE give us a Grabbed by the Ghoulies 2!

Highly underrated game, I had a lot of fun with it. But hey, the reviewers did their job of nailing it to the cross! Bastards. I love how now all these games, from Banjo N&B to GBTG (and Kameo too) get a nice new second chance with Rare Replay.

Grabbed By the Ghoulies seemed like one of Rare's weaker games at the time, but honestly I feel like it's gotten better with age. Where the gameplay has it's shortcomings it's made-up for with Rare's goofy humor and atmosphere. Definitely deserving of its cult status despite its flaws.
Also a whole lot of innuendo, a man who thinks he's a plane and the ability to throw burgers at zombies. Not every game is considerate enough to give you these things.
The gameplay required u to stratagise later on the game got difficult and its neither it pisses me off this game deserved so much more praise

I didn't play it much because I would get so nervous, I had either my uncle or my younger brother play it and then I would watch them. This really needs either a remaster or a sequel, OR BOTH.
Ghoulies is one of my top favourite Rare games ever, probably. Now that I'm a game art student, even more so, and this video just perfectly showcases what I love most about it. The art direction, the humour, and the way it doesn't take itself too seriously. Really lovely game... I'm glad Rare still loves it despite poor sales.

I just recently purchased Grabbed by the Ghoulies after searching for it since grade 5. Still a smashing game and deserves a remaster! Much love and hope to see more unique games like this one in the future!
I love this game so much, I actually got every achievement for it in Rare Replay. The last achievement being Challenge 21. You should consider giving this game a sequel.

This was technically my first horror game alongside DOOM 3. I still enjoy it to this day thanks to The Rare Replay (I'd love a PC port). A sequel to this and Conker's Bad Fur Day would make me so happy!
The game deserves the following, I've played it, I liked the humor, the characters and something that seldom gets mentioned, the location designs, the mansion has fantastic architecture.

As of 2023, this game is 20 years old, and I have been playing the game for the first time this year (aside from the demo of the game found on Xbox demo discs), and Grabbed By The Ghoulies is one of the few games from Rare that I've been able to play (I will say that, seeing the trailer for Ghoulies in some demo discs and even DVDs, that was how I was exposed to the game, and, in fact, Rare as a whole (and for those curious, the first game from Rare that I got to play was Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts, and, despite its reputation, I find it to be my favorite Xbox 360 game))
And while Grabbed By The Ghoulies wasn't all that successful surrounding its original launch (in fact, its underperformance is mocked several times in Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts), it still retains that Rare charm, and offered a unique, unconventional gameplay experience, which is what Rare is known for.

It was a bit clunky, but a really loved playing Grabbed by the Ghoulies and even played it again on my X360. Good stuff!

This came with my ordinal xbox when I was like 10, what a great game. I never forgot the time that I kicked the grim reaper out of a window and killed him and I haven't even played it in probably a decade.
It truly is the game that makes all manner of ludicrous situations possible.

This game was my entire childhood, and 13 years later I’m reminiscing in the equal joy and childhood terror this game made me feel. This was an absolute blast, if there was any sort of remake I would buy it in a heartbeat. I also just now noticed the Banjo easter egg in the hall with all the heads! Super clever!

Kind of a shame it never released for the Gamecube, but it's good it was released anyway. Even without the co-op it was a blast to play with friends.
One of the top 3 best games Rare made along with KI and DK racing. But its best played on Xbx series BC. Fighting with right stick is more fluid.
I still play this game on my original Xbox and still is my favorite game i will love a sequel i think this game deserve it....
I find it sad that if Greg the Grim Reaper got in a fight with the reaper from Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Greg would be killed most likely. Isn't it strange when a villain from an E rated game has a much better chance at destroying a character from an M rated title?

I used to play this game at my grandma's place with my uncles console and I've loved it since then, I just happened to always forget its name until now that I googled it and did some research on it. I didn't know it was that underrated! No wonder why everytime I brought it up in a conversation nobody seemed to know what was I talking about. I just love the memories this brings to me :)

I really liked grabbed by the ghoulies! I always enjoy the haunted house themed games, but this had Rare's comical touch to it that made it special. Also I've lived in America my whole life and didn't know wash my lettuce was something inappropriate o_o

I played this game over and over as a kid. There was one part I'd always get stuck on but it was something I instantly was able to pick up

I remember when I was still a little kid , I used to watch this cartoon network dvd that came in a cereal box , after watching the cartoons they had a trailer of this game , sadly I didnt have an Xbox at the time but I was really interested in trying out this game , years have past one of my freinds ended up giving me their old xbox because she was movinv , then as of this year I finally found a copy of this game at my local game store I bought without looking at the price , went straight home and been playing it ever since
Imagine Grabbed by the Ghoulies 2 for Next Gen consoles. Updated visuals, new mobs, continued story, new location(Maybe return to mansion for a brief moment.), and imagine a Co-op mode for GBTG or an Online mode where you fight your friends with any weapon scattered across the rooms or play against random people to unlock new customization options for Cooper/Your online character
This is a great game, its like the kid friendly version of Splatter House

See. That's what I've been telling people.
You can't go for photorealistic graphics all the time. In a few years, you will look back on it and say, 'Wow this looks like crap'
But games like JSRF, this game, Psychonauts,also Windwaker, that didn't need an HD rerelease, those games look so good STILL because art direction and sense of style count for so much more, and unlike realism, that never deteriorates over time.
I love Grabbed By the Ghoulies. I love you guys.

It's wierd, this video makes me want to go out and buy the game
I absolutely adored and feared this game as a kid. Grim reaper or medusa levels meant I had to wait for my dad to get home to pass it, little me could not face them alone. The music was (and still is) one of my favorite aspects; I remember getting so hyped during the ninja imp levels. Funny enough, this game inspired me to stand up to a bully who sat next to me on the bus. I wound up pummeling the kid into submission and he never bothered me again. Despite that, the game still terrified me. To this day, I will sometimes have anxiety dreams that I'm in the haunted house with the ghouls with no way out and no way to fight them. Nowadays, as an adult who has adult things to worry about, I will suddenly remember the existence of this game, insert the disc into my Xbox, and try to get as far into the game as I can before I have to return to adulting. I like to involve my younger relatives in playing this game, it's too good to not share. Sometimes (like rn), I check online in hopes that there will be a sequel announced. This game has been such a big part of my childhood and I enjoy it to this day. I would love nothing more than for a sequel to be released. Anyways, this came out longer than I expected, I will go now.
If Psychonauts was able to be revived from the videogame purgatory despite it not selling that great either, I have HIGH hopes of seeing this one coming back
It deserves to. Physconauts wasn’t even fun as the remake this game I played through like 4 times recently if it came back with more monsters levels and stuff it would be amazing. And hopefully do well. But i got damaged game twice now I’m not replaying through it again it makes me mad it deleted all my plats and progress twice now for no reason. On Xbox one. Also speed glitch the game speeds up randomly sometimes making jumpscares impossible since the game is going fast.
I also have been seeing a weird amount of videos of this game that are recent no reason it doesn’t come back
Sweet game in the day I cant help but see a little Fortnite in the way they made the graphics look,The art directors in both these games have a similar style with the no straight edges look

Hands down Favourite Rare game Underrated to death (Literally) and undervalued by critics this game is amazing all the characters have personalities there's tons of funny humour cartoon style and all around reminds me of a kid version of resident evil this is probably because of the amount of children playing or wanting to play Resident Evil all the weapons are hilarious to use and pack a punch my favourite being the hamburgers I love throwing a barrage of burgers at the Goulies and making puns like "Eat This!" 😂 one of my first games I ever played as a kid and I was scared by it but I loved it because it's just so good I even bought it on my xbox one through backwards compatibility I sometimes stream it too the viewer count is always 0 but I hope if someone watches they'll be able to appreciate this underrated masterpiece
My all time favrotie game next to Ininja and dragonslair 3d! I played through the wntire game on the anniversary with my brother very fun still to the day. The challenge mode is so much fun to platinum everything
