- Dr. Sal Mercogliano, Maritime Historian at Campbell University talks with Andy Mac about the planned demolition of parts of the Key Bridge, which will be critical to removing and rebuilding the bridge eventually after the March collapse of the vital travel corridor of Baltimore, Maryland and the entire Eastern Seaboard. The Dali cargo ship remains stuck against the exposed road of the bridge, mud and the foundation of structure. The controlled explosion should take place later this week.

Great to see Dr. Sal on the news! I think he is on the news quite often.
Several of the crew appear to have broken many solas and imo laws by sailing an unseaworthy ship and not operating it correctly , keep them onboard as i'm sure many crew want to dissappear ashore.
i don't understand these peoples explanations sometimes, the reason they can't cut it is because it is twisted in so many directions it has an incredible amount of what is called stored energy. It has a whipping action much like a fishing pole when the fish gets off the hook and it whips back. When a huge beam is twisted it is difficult to determine where that stored energy is and will go, and clearly if it goes toward those working it could be potentially be fatal. By blowing the cuts with shape charges it relieves all the energy at the same time and allows personnel to be away from it when it does relieve the stresses.

They have to make sure that once the debris is removed from the bow of the M/V Dali that the ship remains "trimmed", in other words that the ship stays stablized to avoid a sudden tilt, something that G-d forbid would cause further problems during the salvage operation. I have extensive training in marine operations with vessels of up to 180.000 DWT which is as much as twice as the M/V Dali 90.000 DWT, and can tell you have to be prepared for additional time for the removal of the debris and the salvage operations of this vessel to happen, you just have to be patient, that operation is far more complicated than what you think it is. Sal should be the default Fox reference for all things maritime and it's good that someone noticed! His encyclopedic PERSONAL EXPERIENCE and of course his doctorate are demonstrated on his channel. See his work also for any Jones Act questions (a subject on which the general public are illiterate as they are with shipping both civil and military in general). Sal is a stellar educator and these subjects must be looked at in depth to be understood.
There is the on going problems to road traffic minus a bridge and the rest of the existing bridge, its pillars and road way, I assume will also have to be demolished and removed. At the moment it is a concentration of work on clearing the steel work and suspended road structure, but a new bridge will need a clean site from bank to bank. I wonder if a ferry system will

Root cause analysis is the focus of mishap investigation. Clearing the channel without causing more problems is the focus of the maritime demolition crew. Accuracy is far more important than speed in both cases. Once the ship is freed and moved where it can be examined and repaired all its systems will be available for technical forensics. Right now the important parts need to be operable.

There will be some waves but separate dispersed pieces of steel won't create anything unanticipated. The reason all the specialized equipment in use exists in the first place is centuries of marine demolition precede it. It's interesting stuff. The much more complex recoveries at Pearl Harbor and Scapa Flow are worth a watch.
If that container ship ever moves under its own power, the problem that caused all of this has to be taken care of. If the problem occurs after the bridge, cars and trucks would still be crossing, unmolested.
What is the likelyhood once the explosions happened and the frame is removed that this causes the doli rocking and cos of how many containers are still on there the weight may cause the dolly to tip to the side xx
Most of the cargo is deep in the holds so the Dali is not "top heavy". Heavier weight loads are reviewed using computerized systems so each container's load is placed for best safety. The bridge sections are only partly supported by Dali's bow and the objective is for most of the structure to depart in a controlled manner.
The crew would be the first responders if the explosion causes a fire aboard.

Maritime accidents are common globally but the general public ignores all of that until one make the news then they react as if an incident is somehow exceptional. The US buries over thirty thousand Americans per year killed in car crashes and that is not only no surprise, but we drive cars to the funerals because American are FAMILIAR with cars. OTOH aircraft and ship technology and fleet sizes and accident rates are outside public interest (and they typical IQ is only ~100 which doesn't help) so these things surprise when they should not. Given the staggering volume of shipping the accident rate is impressively modest.

This is new ground for the demo crew they are in a learning phase and don't really know what will happen so expect some delay.
Never underestimate how long it takes to do things in the U.S., especially when the government has offer to pay the bill. Just drag it out for months and book that over time.
