Singer Tom Lenihan from Miltown Malbay at the Kilrush Fleadh in 1967. Tom also called the song "Paddy's Panacea."
www.setdancingn...
"Let your quacks and newspapers be cuttin' their capers
And curing the vapors the scratch and the gout
With their medical [magical] potions, their pills [serums] and their lotions
Upholding their notions, they're mighty put out.
Who [You] can tell the true physic of all things prophetic [pathetic]
And pitch to the divil, cramp, colic and spleen
You'll know it I think if you take a big drink
With your mouth to the brink of a jug of poteen
So stick to the cratur' the best thing in nature
For sinking your sorrows and raising your joys
Oh what moderation gives hope to a nation
Or brings consolation like poteen me boys.
[Oh what botheration, no dose in the nation
Can give consolation like poteen me boys. ]
No liquid cosmetic to lovers athletic
Or bodies [ladies] pathetic can give such a bloom
As the sweet by the powers in the garden of flowers
E'er gave their own bowers such a darling perfume
And this liquid so rare if you willingly share
To be taking your hair when it's frizzled and dead
Oh the sod has the merit to yield the true spirit
So strong it will shake all the hairs from your head
Then stick to the cratur' the best thing in nature
For sinking your sorrows and raising your joys
Oh since its perfection, no doctor's direction
Can cleanse the complexion like poteen me boys
As a child in me cradle, me nurse with [from] her ladle
Was filling my [swillin her] mouth with a notion of pap [Pep]
When a drop from her bottle fell into my throttle
I stumbled and capered clean out of her lap
On the floor I lay crawlin' and screaming and bawling
'Til me mother and father were called to the fore
All sobbing and sighing they feared I was dying
But soon found I only was crying for more.
So stick to the cratur' the best thing in nature
For sinking your sorrows and raising your joys
Oh lord how they'd chuckle if babes in their truckle
They only could suckle on poteen me boys
Through my youthful aggression, through times of depression
My childhood's impression still clung to my mind
And at school or at college the basis [bolus]* of knowledge
I never could gulp 'til with whiskey combined
And as older I'm growing times ever bestowin'
On Erin's potation, a flavor so fine
And how ere they may lecture on jove and his nectar
Itself is the only true liquid divine
So stick to the cratur' the best thing in nature
For sinking your sorrows and raising your joys
Oh lord, 'tis the right thing for courting and fighting
There's nowt so exciting as poteen me boys.
Come guess me this riddle, what beats pipes and fiddle
What's hotter than mustard and milder [wilder] than cream
What best wets your whistle, what's clearer than crystal
What's sweeter than honey and stronger than steam
What'll make the lame walk, what will make the dumb talk,
The elixir of life and philospher's stone
And what helped Mr. Brunel to build the Thames Tunnel
Wasn't it poteen from ould Inishowen
So stick to the cratur' the best thing in nature
For sinking your sorrows and raising your joys
Oh lord, it's no wonder, if lightning and thunder
Weren't made from the plunder of poteen me boys."
This song makes me proud to be Irish. And I'm French.
I'm Filipino & this awakes the inner Irish in me. Ur not alone món cherie
Hahaha
That is the genuine old style , it is still alive along the west coast of Ireland.
this and black and tans, honest to God
😂
Tom never drank alcohol...hence the comment.."why don't you drink it yourself". I had the pleasure of seeing Tom singing in Slattery's,Capel Street, Dublin in the mid 70's...Used to be a mighty session every Wednesday Night and the man on the door was Kevin Cunniffe (now Borhrán Player & Singer with the Chieftains)
Not many people know this fact, I know because he's actually my great grand father
That was the best little moment in the video! What a scene to behold.
@@daralenihan love his rendition of this classic. Have listened to it numerous times.
The Chieftains!!!!! They’re a pretty lit group/band!!!
Wow I did not know that!
My grandfather was an Irish immigrant, settling in the northeast of the US. He would tell me Irish folklore as bed time stories, and sing me this song in particular and many others to cheer me up. Hearing this man sing this song brings me to tears. I’m American, I’ve never been to Ireland, but I feel so very at home at the tone and accent of this man’s voice. I pray to whatever gods that may be, that I’m at least half the man my grandfather was, and that my children and grandchildren will love me half as much.
The difference between your grandfather and the immigrants been dumped all over Ireland is your grandfather worked himself to the bone to rear his family,I bet he never had an easy pound put in his pocket,Ireland is over run with scroungers at the minute all wanting to bleed the country dry.
This is exactly how I feel. You took the words right out of my mouth
Stronger than mustard
And sweeter than cream
Our old friend

As an Irish man living abroad in Croatia I miss the Irish spirit and joy of a pint and the spontaneous nature of the Irish!
the song or session rousing up from nowhere,it’s becoming less common amd videos like this remind me of the beautiful nature and thinking of us all far and wide
I'm living in Liverpool atm and last paddy's day I met another lass from sligo (I'm from wicklow) on the train home and we started a little spontaneous session. I've never been so homesick as when I got off that train to a quiet empty street
I hear ya. From Ireland, have to travel a lot currently abroad. The culture in Ireland is hard bet. The weather is shite, the government is whatever by by jaydus the lads are the craic.
Im Australian and we have a drinking culture to rival Ireland but we dont have the same spirit when doing so. Would love to visit a proper Irish pub one day to down a few pints.
I only just heard this for the first time 5 minutes ago but it has me in tears, I feel like I've found some video of long lost family. I will be having a drink tonight
Nuts, same here
Are you related to him too?!!
Nob
Same! But today!
Same but tonight
I listen to this at least once a week. I don’t know why. Love it.
Irish folk music like the spirituals sung by the Africans in America forced to be slaves sings a truly deep song beyond all things surface. The suffering and joy and love of life itself. Find a great recording of "down by the riverside" and tell me it doesn't fill you with the same warmth depth of love that this Irish folk Melody does. The reason is, we are all from the same home. Much love to you my friend
Reminds me of my great uncle , a kind hearted understated man but with such a pure love and voice. Forever singing old Irish songs, slainte !
Atmospheric, the closeness and kindness of days gone by.
I'm Australian. All my family history back to the first fleet was Irish. I've never felt so at home overseas as when I visited Ireland. Might as well have been home
What a brilliant last line!
You could be writing years waiting for a line like that.
“I don't know what's worse: to not know what you are and be happy, or to
become what you've always wanted to be, and feel alone.”
Did not expect to read such a fine and profound comment on a video like this...but given the beauty of the song, I guess that's to be expected. Well typed, and good fortune to you and yours.
It was st Patrick’s day earlier I’ll have to learn this for next year so glad the words are written down
Damn those pints look refreshing
Hahaha don't they? You can see it on the faces of the men after taking a big gulp. All with a hard days of work behind them no doubt (or not ;).
Helps that they're sucking out of them like suck calves 🤣
They don’t look cold though and why are the bar staff pouring them from jugs
Too bad there
Piss warm
Which is how they drink their ale(beer)
In the United Kingdom
And Ireland (Eire)
@@handsoffmycactus2958 Pre-gas days I presume where the same pint is being pulled in perpetuity - recycling the foam, letting it settle in the jug, before topping up the next pint, the system works when there's a thirsty drinking crowd swarming for pints (slaughtering bishops)
Not Irish myself but must admit they, a lot of the "celts" tbh, have a talent for melody.
This clip is 55 years old...
@@clarebannermanthey mean people descended from the celts, which goes beyond just the Irish
This is my favourite video on RUclips 😊
Humours of Whiskey! Legendary singing and moment for those all in that pub!
That's beautiful. His little grandson's his spitting image.
Grandson? I wonder are you talking about my dad or either of my uncles?
@@daralenihan ik im 2 years late but your pa is a fuckin legend mate
This is definitely the most Irish video I've ever seen in my life.
What a gem I’ve stumbled upon!
This is excellent to see, people were full of poems, stories and songs to sing back in those days, Did you notice the young Burt Lancaster , 3rd on the right with open white shirt and loose tie, listen to his cousin reciting this drinking song.
That word is so important it lives today in Glasgow slang in the Irish communities of Glasgow. For those that don’t know it means home brew. Usually whiskey (uisce beatha (life water)). But can be a general term for moonshine of any sort.
Where I come from, craytur - and I've never thought about how it's spelt, is a person who is deserving of uncritical sympathy because of the sorry miserable state they might be in, be it abject poverty, saddening illness or just crushing loneliness, whatever it is you just feel helplessly sorry for that person "Ah the poor craytur" etc. I still feel it and use this word which I picked up from old aunts or uncles starting in the 60s.. someone who you perceive to be suffering unduly. From Fingal or north county Dublin. I never knew it refers to poteen. (Pucheen)
créatúr is irish for "ye poor thing" roughly speaking - now I know,
Thank you guy!
In heaven were gonna meet and I will hopefully be blessed to serve you a big pine or what ever you would to wish to be served!
Excuse my English 😘
No worries for the English, almost quite spot on - but a 'pint' and the singer, Tom Linehan, will probably even refuse it in heaven as he never drank alcohol when down here (a teetotaller/Pioneer). Unless heaven has changed his approach somewhat :-)
This tune never gets old
In case some or you don't realise - he is singing about poteen but they are drinking Guinness. Poteen = Irish moonshine, pronounced " pehcheen "
Ya I'm irish drunk listening to it down the west coast of clare wind is blowing first time commenting but the video is class😊
This shall be committed to memory. Thanks
I love this clip, Michael. Tom Lenihan's performance is so quietly elegant and heartwarming. Up the Banner!
A haunting and beautiful song
i know its feckin 8 30 in the morning, but after watching this i just want to drink.
I love your movies, Twins peaks is unreal.
You need the cratur for times like these. Cratur 1 Coronavirus 0 👍🍀✌️
This is just great! Bravo, to berryjewell forgiving us the lyrics, also!
Many thanks!
great video! The atmoshere is just great! Friendly people gathered, songs, beers, happines!
Let the record reflect the following:
The man was right ( I may hold a great deal of Appreciation for what he said , but he spoke the truth , even if he didn’t par-take in the drink himself, but he hit the head on nail) I’ve searched for lesson on this for great while, he put into words what must be said. I can’t speak for state of KY, but I must say his words voice my opinion.
beautifully sung, very subtly melodic! and he looks so innocent and shy! :D love it!!!
This makes me proud to be Irish there’s nowhere that compares
This is so beautiful, and so real.
a privilege to see (& hear ) this
Found out a few months ago I have Irish in me unfortunately most of my family died so no one to tell me but songs like this, they always brought something out from deep within me. Guess I should have listened because it was trying to tell me something 😅
If pubs were like this in Sweden i would start drinking again. Is there anymore of this lad ?
Just brilliant. Rest his soul
When I was in High School we'd occassionally have a substitute from Lithuania. She always talked about poteens so we called her the poteen lady.
This is an atmosphere that dosent exist anymore. Before everyone was caught up in everything.
Well typed. You've said a mouthful.
It's not exactly the same but this was at a fleadh, which they still throw in the country. As big as ever, you can go if you want.
Luddite nonsense, in my opinion. Go to a decent pub on a Friday evening and you'll still find a great atmosphere and honest people content with their pints and each other's company.
@@charlesjtwhite I agree except singing especially after a few sherries at my local you will run afoul of the publican or his son they do not do music
Very cool to hear this and see the old footage
2022 we are raising our joys

As a mutt in America, im glad part of my history is irish, if there is ever music that makes me want to get drunk it's this
Cheers
I was at that festival...The comment at the end .."No bother to you"....was a great saying at the time in Clare..meant as a compliment...Tom was from a place called Miltown Malbay (north of Kilrush) and passed away in 1990en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Lenihan
Aye, this is good. What a voice!
I like this short version, easy to sing.
It’s a great tune
A song celebrating the joys of back-country, rebel-brewed Donegal moonshine... Video shows scene after scene of Dublin-brewed, crown-owned porter.
o.0
Crown owned porter I didn’t know the Royal family held majority stake in Guinness then
This is a great performance and a lot of fun. For some reason it reminds of "The Waterford Boys" and if it wasn't for the sound this would look more like a performance of "A Pint Of Plain Is Yer Only Man" for there's hardly a drop of the cratur to be seen.
wow, what a voice!!! amazing!!!
The ironic thing is everyone in this video is drinking Porter xD
I think that's because Poitin was always contraband - distributed and consumed in private but you could sing its praises in pubic (houses).
I believe it's Stout.
payleryder45 pubic houses?
Its Guinness!
@@payleryder45 They should still be drinking some sort of whiskey as opposed to beer.
May it ever be, and be ever so.
Up the irish .God bless us all and keep us safe in these times.
Fantastic tune
I see footage after this, is there anywhere to find it in its entirety?
Everyone needs to listen to Hoziers cover it’s perfect
Now that's a proper pour.
What a voice this auld buck had on him
looking forward to the Mary Wallopers version now
Is there a full version of this programme available anywhere? Would love more of Jimmy ward.

Excellent video...love the jugs of Guinness.
Oh for those times.

lovely stuff ...well sang boy
Great video, great tune. All very well dressed men; not a track suit to be seen

national treasure right here.
Fantastic singing!
A WEE BIT OF OULD IRELAND.....MAGIC.
Thanks
Oh me friend ye know I love this it is beautiful.
Yer Friend Ni'Choncradha
the old songs are the best
The best line in the middle of the song.."why don't you drink it yourself"
''Why don't you drink it yourself''🥲
Beautiful
Fantastic
Brilliant. Love when ole Andy M Stewart did it.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! ☘️
I can barely understand him but I'd still raise a toast
fabulous!
If this isn't on your Saint Patrick's Day playlist your dead to me and to Ireland
If you call it Saint Patty's day you're dead to Ireland
@@theotherfella2138 thanks for calling me out and then I was drunk and it was 3 in the morning when I made this post
Classic and loving it, go raibh maith agat
that looks like loads of fun ... .
This sound is about getting on it
A suggestion: Is it possible that 'cratur,' 'crathur,' etc. are Irish pronunciation for 'Creature,' as in "Creature comforts-" things like a warm place to sit, a good smoke, a meal and a spot of something strong?
the literal definition of crathur/craythur is creature lmao
@@Aj-sn1dp It's similar to the word critter in the u.s, but is often used to describe people in Ireland. This actually where the word critter comes from.
It is an Irish pronunciation of "creature" and also means whiskey or poteen. In the song "Finnegan's Wake," Tim Finnegan has "a drop of the craytur every morn." You could also refer to a person or animal as "craytur." I don't think it has anything to do with "creature comforts."
@@be8nice créatúr means like oh an créatúr. Oh the poor lad
@@colmhogan6875 I know that, but in this song it refers to liquor.
Those pints of guinness look well tasty and poured the traditional way
Terrific! TY
Wonder would there be any issue with using this as an animation theme tune? 😮😍
Sheer magic!
Captions are bad but definitely love the song
Great video but what's up with the first link in the description, why does it link to that website?
Do they still serve stout like that anywhere?
Wetherspoons in Ireland when they have a casked stout on, the bierhaus and tig na bhric casked Guinness died in 1973
Tim Lyons' version was on the Green Linnet's Twentieth Anniversary album. Anyone know where it can be found online?
Great stuff
Is there a full video of this cause it cuts out most of the song
ruclips.net/video/0oQKyAzheok/видео.html
I don't drink at all, like ever. But those look tasty 👀
And just saw text in more info!
why don't you drink it your self then, what a class line
I'm his great grandaughter and he actually never drank haha thats why it was said in the song
He is my granuncie
That was great!
Too cool.
