  • SISSEL performed this famous Faroese song "Tíðin Rennur (Time is running)", written in 1892 by Friðrikur Petersen, at the occasion of a TV CONCERT filmed in the FAROE Islands in 1990 and released on TV in 1991. Sissel was in her early twenties at that time, but was already a well-known singer especially in Norway and in BERGEN, her hometown. The orchestra is directed by Per Egil HOVLAND.
The whole TV program, produced by Stageway, lasted about 70 minutes and was made of two parts. The first one, called "Med Sissel til Kirkjubø*", was filmed partially outdoors in various places of interest of the Faroe Islands (mainly Kirkjubø and Vestmann areas), and partially indoors, in the concert hall of the Nordic House of Tórshavn (Streymoy island). The second part of the program was called "Sissel i Christianskirkjuni". It is a church concert filmed in "Christianschurch", in Klaksvik (Borðoy island). * Kirkjubø is the old cultural and spiritual center of the Faroes located a few kilometers south of Tórshavn.
The posted song allows also discovering a spectacular landscape, with a nice sunset over the ocean and high cliffs north of Vestmann overlooking the sea.
Sissel performance was never released in any album or DVD later on, and to my knowledge, only very few recordings of the concert still exist today
I already posted in 2007 several videos of this TV concert, including one of this song (see: Sissel Kyrkjebo, 1991, visit of the Faroes islands_2). The new version includes the Lyrics and is of a much better quality. Finding the Lyrics was however not an easy task, especially when trying to capture the correct wording. There are still some discussions on the Web regarding how writing such or such word, and I did the best I could !.
I hope you will ENJOY IT.
    Plo94 - June 2012
    TECHNICAL information:
The TV Concert was recorded in 1991 in Bergen by one of my friends from Norway. The "old" VHS tape (more than 20 years old now ) was digitized this time using the "Terratec G3" device. The resulting .avi file was then filtered with "Virtualdub" to clean the images (the "NeatVideo" denoise filter performed very well) and colors were adjusted. Finally, the video was edited and lyrics added using the PowerDirector10 movie software.
    LYRICS (see also References** below):
Tíðin rennur sum streymur í á,
    títt munnu bylgjurnar falla:
    lítlum báti rekist eg á,
    áraleysur at kalla.
(Og) hvør ein løta og hvør ein stund
    at stóra fossinum dregur:
treingist mítt hjarta, tyngist mín lund,
    hvar er úr neyðini vegur?
Hvør hevur vinur vilja og mátt
    at bjarga mær til landa?
Allir (teir) eru á líkan hátt
    staddir sum eg í vanda.
Ein hevur vinur(in) vilja og mátt
    at bjarga mær frá grandi;
Jesus kann føra mín lítla bát
    trygt at himnasandi.
Tíðin rennur sum streymur í á,
    fram í Harrans navni!
    Lítlum báti eri eg á,
    himnastrond fyri stavni.
LYRICS in English (see also References** below):
Time is running like the stream in a river
    The water is rough
I am drifting in a little boat
    Without oars
    Every moment and every second
I am drifting closer to the waterfall
    Feeling sad and scared
Is there a way out of this distress
Which friend has the will and the power
    to help me ashore
everyone is in the same situation
    distressed, like me
One friend has the will and power
    To help me from hopelessness
Jesus! can lead my little boat
    Safely to the heavenly shore
Time is running like a stream in a river
Onward in the name of the Lord
I am in a little boat
The Heavenly shore is in front of my stern.

This is the most beautiful song I have ever heard. We sang it in the church when my faroeish grandfather was burried. It has so much emotion and love within. This song spreads real peace.

Hvussu lærdi Sissel at úttala føroyskt so væl? Var tað skrivað phonetiskt? Eg skal nemmiliga læra kórið eg syngji við ein føroyskan sang. Eg eri spent at hoyra hvussu tað var gjørt í hesum sangi um. Er nakar tykkara sum veit? Ella kanska veit hvønn eg kann spyrja?

The power and magic of Sissel is given by the fact that even if you don't know Norwegian at all, her voice is enough to be in the Heaven!

She's actually singing a hymn in the Faroese language during her concert at the Nordic House in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, in 1991.

    • @oldsqldma
      @oldsqldma 2 года назад +3

No, the song itself is sung in Faroese, even though Sissel herself is Norwegian. However, the Faroese language is also a descendant of Old West Norse. Just like modern Norwegian.

The composer was Jógvan Waagstein, 1879 - 1949.

I don't knw what's correct. I just noticed Fridrikur Petersen had written the hymn. I guess that Waagstein composed the music to the Tidur rennur
