A lot of great games this year but FF7 Rebirth is still my game of the year. Nothing has come close to the excitement and experience I felt during my entire 100hr playthrough.. Can’t wait to play it again.
Mike may legitimately be one of the funniest humans alive. The chaotic energy he brings to KF is truly beautiful. Thank you all for dealing with him so we can reap the entertainment benefits.
Leaving out Metaphor until I play it, but for now I’d narrow it down to: -Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth -Astro Bot -Helldivers 2 -Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth -Stellar Blade -Black Myth: Wukong
Even if you ignore all the cameos and fan service in Astro Bot it's still an amazing platformer. The fact that on top of that it's also a beautiful homage to the whole gaming industry makes it the perfect candidate for GOTY imo
Sleeping on Black Myth Wukong is a huge mistake. My GOTY is still probably FF7 maybe because nostalgia but serious Wukong is a must play. Not just the gameplay but the lore of that game is awesome def should be in the conversation.
Nobody play Unicorn Overlord? It’s in my top picks for sure. Some great choices on here though 👍 I love listening to Mike during that beat at the end 😂❤

Andy, you can smash through the last few chapters of Rebirth in about 15 hours unless you decide to pick up a tonne of side content. There's a very obvious point of no return and it's all linear after that
DLC and Expansions surely fit better into 'Best Ongoing'? It's GAME of the Year afterall right? Expanding on an already fantastic base game seems unfair to newcomers for me.
I love the Like a Dragon series and I gotta shout it out whenever I get a chance. (I admit Infinite Wealth is probably not even my GOTY but it's up there)

wont win game of the year, but I have been playing UFO50 and I am blown away, not just 1 good game, but 50 great, unique games. Not every one of them are bangers but most of them are so fun, and a few are way longer with more depth than you would expect. Its a feat of a game that deserves attention.

Expansions shouldn't count as you need to base game to play it. You have to get very far into ER to even start SotET. If it was stand alone then fine but it isn't.
Honestly haven’t played much from this year, think it’s either Prince of Persia, WuKong, or 9 Sols. Haven’t finished Rebirth, but I think about it more than any other game I’ve played this year.
Picking DLC as a game of the year is so unbelievably silly. Its not like we are short of options this year either. Some people have way too hard of a boner for anything FromSoft that they'd even consider DLC above Rebirth, Wukong, Astro Bot, Prince of Persia etc

DLC doesn't count as game of the year. I think Erdtree deserves awards, but it's not a game. It's DLC. If anything VGA should make a category specifically for DLC.
When I hear someone say, "Yeah, it's my FAVORITE game of the year, but it doesn't have that _special something_ for GOTY," it makes me feel like the person saying that is hoping something more expensive-feeling shows up. GOTY doesn't need to have a special something! It feels like the whole "Kena: Bridge of Spirits is the best indie of the year because it feels more expensive and triple-A than other indie games" thing.

I haven't played a lot of the bigger releases from this year yet. That being said, my GOTY is probably a top 4 of Balatro, Cryptmaster, Persona 3 Reload, and Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom currently. Top 5 would add Ghost of Tsushima (released on PC this year)
A lot of the games I've been playing this year are either games that I missed out on for various reasons, either due to only having Nintendo Consoles until recently, or just was too young for (Red Dead Redemption 1 - rerelease, Bioshock 1 remastered, Spiderman PS4 remastered, Hi Fi Rush, God of War 2018 for PC). The only games that I've played this year that actually came out this year are Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door remake, and Thank Goodness you're here, so I guess it's those? Outside of that, Spider-Man, God of War and Hi Fi Rush are my favourites.
My GOTY right now is def FF7 Rebirth, with Astro Bot close behind that, and P3 Reload behind that. Those games are the top 3 this year that made me go "Holy shit video games are incredible."
Shadow of the Erdtree is not a game, it's an expansion to an already existing game. It's exhausting listening to people talking about DLCs as GOTY contenders.
I think Destiny 2 The Final Shape is my GOTY but i wouldn't be surprised, based on the demo, if Metaphor surpasses it. For me FF7R2 and Erdtree have too many issues with them to be GOTY.

Not sure if anybody else is on the same boat, I really loved Shadow of the Erdtree but can’t lie, I found the exploration this time around a bit dull and not as exciting because I already had my weapons and armor and that took away from my enjoyment just a tiny bit. Loved the boss fights but I found myself not loving searching for fragments to level up and fight them, still on the final boss.

So if From released Shadow as a standalone it would be eligible? Seems silly to disqualify a game because it's a DLC. That feels like an arbitrary rule that's only purpose is to block DLC that's better than most "full" games.

Shadow has a ton of content, built on the content of the main game. Also,dlc can't be accessed without reaching a certain point in the main game

As great and long of an experience Erdtree is, it's still DLC. You can't buy it and then boot it up on its own, so it's not a game.
