No mention here about the fact that Carter was told the mission was nearly impossible and that Beckwith suggested the mission be scrubbed prior to this incident. A hostage rescue would surely change the American voters opinion on Carter so he ordered the mission go on despite Beckwiths concerns. I’m addition, this was not a failed mission. The mission was aborted. The crash happened during the movement to head back to base. This was not a failure of the military. This was a failure of the Carter administration and Carter himself.
@hoot1141 Bud is a beer. And you assume that just because it was the WRONG decision, it was done by Carter for purely personal reasons. That is a common tactic for people, ascribing base and selfish motives to pm those they disagree with or dislike. I think that Carter had military advisers who advised in favor of this action and military advisers who advised against it. He made the wrong decision, but I do not think he made it just to improve his standing in the polls or anything like that. Finally, your nitpicking about what constitutes a "failed mission" is really silly. The bottom line is that they did not accomplish their objective (which was freeing the hostages and getting them out of Iran), so in most people's view, that would constitute a failed mission. And I do not think that that lessens the criticism that can be placed upon Carter.
@@trwent I read Col. Beckworth's book Delta Force. He wanted to go in the winter time, with a smaller force of just his team and air gun ships circling over head. He points to the fact that every branch of the military wanted in on the plan. He wrote that caused too many people involved and none trained for this type of action. He would write in the book winter time was the time to go. Cold and the students at the embassy guarding the hostages huddled around barrels with fires burning in them to stay warm. It was this "we all want in on the plan" that led to problems when Reagan went into Grenada. Navy seals died in rough waters because the navy wanted in on the raid.

whole different situation. here they have to cross the whole country to rescue hostages into a city and get it back. do you really think the iranians would not react? how are they suppose to get undetected?
This mission has been studied and dissected over 1000 times. The redundancy plans of or Special Operation forces are now over engineered and over thought because of Desert 1.
Did we analyze any of the reasons the Iran saw us as antagonists? Helping to assassinate their president in the 50's (and the after effects) might have something to do with it.
No one could have pulled this mission off it was just too dangerous and should not have been attempted. Not even today’s hostage rescue specialists would have a chance of achieving the 100% success rate that would be demanded at the mission’s conclusion.
The worst part of the decision to try the operation was Carter's insistence that it be a combined special forces effort. Back then the different branches had very poor communications outside of the Pentagon. Had he just sent Seals and Marine amphibious forces and trained properly the outcome would have been totally different. I was aboard the USS Okinawa LPH-3 for this mission.
If I remember correctly, Delta Force was ready to go long before they were given the okay from president Carter. Col.Beckwith had to sell himself to his superiors that they could pull this off... President Carter wasn't easy to convince about this rescue... in the book " Delta Force " by Charlie A. Beckwith .
This mission is also why the Special Operation Command (SOCOM) was founded. Communication was poor between the branches' special forces in 1980; also not helpful was Col. Beckwith's perceived "ordering around" of Navy Admirals and Army and Air Force Generals.
This account isn't borne out by facts on the ground which appear to demonstrate the C-130 crashed into the helicopters. In the C-130-helicopter wreckage the rotor blades are all intact while the propellers on one wing of the C-130 are shredded. Before anyone states that the military don't lie, two words, Jessica Lynch.
Conspiracy much? Who hit what is a factor. The biggest problem was the way the mission was thrown together and the different services inability by choice or abilities to meld together for a successful mission. That is well documented.

From this disaster, 160th SOAR was born. Too many chefs in the kitchen. 160th solved that problem. Today and for many years since, almost all special ops aviation duties fall to the nightstalkers
It probably *would* have been a "piece of cake". US military had already gone through a similar rescue attempt at Son Tay, not to mention Cabanatuan and Los Banos POW camp raids in WWII.
Carter wanted to imitate the Israeli successful raid in entebbe uganda on July 4 1976, not understanding that it requires deep planning and professionalism, carter had good intentions but was not a deep strategist
Fairly decent film but it did not give forth the details that it was the US marine corps that caused the disaster. First of all they did not maintain helicopters properly so they were flight-worthy. Second of all they were not trained to fly in adverse weather conditions if you can believe it? They could only fly VFR as opposed to IFR flight rules. And lastly they flew their helicopter into Air Force C-130 and killed five Air Force personnel and three Marines in the process and scuttled the mission completely and brought shame on the nation. Please tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God. All United States Army personnel were able to get off of the aircraft in time thank God before they blew up and burned up.
After the spectacularly successful Israeli hostage rescue at Entebbe and the Embassy hostage rescue by British SAS in London, this was supposed to be the US answer
The US Navy during that time, was a gathering of far too many drug and alcohol abusers. The cultural expectations of that time tolerated such perverse conduct. I saw it. It was shocking. They're only interested in American money and back-up in covering up their atrocities.
whole different situation. here they have to cross the whole country to rescue hostages into a city and get it back. do you really think the iranians would not react? how are they suppose to get undetected?
@@xayvath5221SUPPOSED, not "suppose".
They took a task on nobody else wanted to do. God speed gentlemen.
I was onboard the Nimitz during that rescue attempt. Jet engine mechanic with Fighter Squadron VF-41.
This mission has been studied and dissected over 1000 times. The redundancy plans of or Special Operation forces are now over engineered and over thought because of Desert 1.

So state terrorism lives albeit in a different shape and form. Or is it to calm your injured sense of nationalism.
@Branden Lee I merely stated a fact that does not need any research. It is self-explanatory.
Did we analyze any of the reasons the Iran saw us as antagonists? Helping to assassinate their president in the 50's (and the after effects) might have something to do with it.
Wow horrific story
No one could have pulled this mission off it was just too dangerous and should not have been attempted.
Not even today’s hostage rescue specialists would have a chance of achieving the 100% success rate that would be demanded at the mission’s conclusion.
There are many versions of truth!!
But;Have we learned anything from our past mistakes??
Doesn't seem like it tbh
@Alex Al Looking at these commments, mostly not.
Thanks for going men and welcome home.
I can’t believe he used the term “secret agent.”
Our CC told us about it in boot camp.
So tragic
Just listening to these 7 minutes were horrifying.
I hope that this invitation to speak openly was in some way therapeutic to Mr. Schaefer.
I’d also like to hear from those four secret service agents...

Both were huge blunders.
Wow
Carter had reduced funding for equipment and training for the military so much that they were not prepared for such a complex mission.
Good job Iran
And the fuel truck driver?
Definitely died, but theyre not going to say that because it would make America look bad!
In the documentary he left the truck and hopped in with another truck behind him then they headed back into town

So did my country. We removed Mossedeg and installed an oppressive regime. There is good reason why the revolution was popular with the people at the time.
@@LokiTheGodofMischief Please show a LITTLE respect for the Iranian people, instead of saying "we removed" and "we installed" as though the Iranians were just passive, impotent "third world" victims of "US imperialism". A handful of CIA operatives (whose mission had already been called off) did some underhanded things to stirr up discontent against Mossadeg and drum up support for the Shah, but the Iranian clergy and populace was already tending this way and there were many complex factors at work. It would be more accurate to assert that the Iranians "removed" Jimmy Carter and "installed" Ronald Reagan.

That pretty much sealed Jimmy Carter's re-election bid. He lost it because of the disaster. My heart goes out to the families & friends of those we lost, & survived. Survivor guilt is tough. RIP.
Carter wasn't reelected MOSTLY because he was a tragically poor president. He had very bad relations with Congress, and couldn't accomplish much (if anything) on his reform (taxes, healthcare, etc.) agenda. He was a terrible micromanager. He was--still is--a person of admirable character, but his post-Presidential career/accomplishments outshine his Presidential term.
Nixon also sent people to hold on to those in captivity by telling them he would offer a better deal not to mention the Iran contra.
I'm guessing US was inspired by Entebbe rescue. Which was a spectacular success.

Then, as now, this was a one way suicide mission. Landing in the middle of Tehran, rounding up the hostages, fighting your way in as well as out, hopelessly short of firepower, refueling and flying out. No country could even consider this operation even today except the USA with its resources What Carter would not do is punish Iran until they came to reason instead they come up with this hair brained idea that could not possibly succeed. For the Marine naval aviator, the error and collision, which could not be avoided, it likely saved lives. Leaving the dead behind was inexcusable and unsupportable, it appears Beckwith panicked

From this disaster, 160th SOAR was born. We didn't have helos dedicated to special ops at that time and worse, because of inter service rivalries then, it wasn't coordinated well enough because marines, army, navy, and air force all wanted a piece of the action. Too many chefs in the kitchen. 160th solved that problem. Today and for many years since, almost all special ops aviation duties fall to the nightstalkers

I think that is would have been much, much worse if they made it to the embassy. Probably would have lost a lot of hostages and military guys.
