- It's time for another Pokemon challenge! Platinum with only Ghost types is a super exciting hardcore nuzlocke for me as it's one of the few games in which Ghost types are remotely viable in terms of encounters. Let's see what we can do!
We've done some hard Pokemon challenges in the past, but usually they were a solo Pokemon challenge run. What if we still did a really difficult challenge... but with a full team using hardcore nuzlocke rules, and with only one type? Today we find out: can I beat a Pokemon Platinum Hardcore Nuzlocke with only Ghost types?

Monotype Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
(1) If a Pokémon faints, it must be permanently boxed or released.
(2) Only the first type-specific Pokémon encountered in each Route/Area can be caught.
(3) No Legendaries/Mythicals, duplicates, or same-evolution-line Pokémon can be caught or used. If a duplicate is encountered, the next unique type-specific Pokémon encounter can be caught.
(4) Additional Pokémon may be caught for the purpose of HM use, but these may not be used in battle at any time during the run.
(5) No Items can be used in battle (Held Items are allowed).
(6) Party Pokémon levels are limited to the highest level Pokémon of the next Gym Leader or Elite 4 Member. So long as your Pokémon are at or below the level cap when the Gym Leader/Elite 4 Member battle starts, they can level up mid-battle.
(7) "Set" Battle Mode must be used at all times.
(8) No connecting with other games for the purposes of trading/importing Pokémon, Items, etc.

Dang, just starting off the video and the idea of those guidebooks was really slick! Would love to see if you could collect some data from other Poketubers about different types, maybe even make a physical print run for one of these once you have all types covered for a certain game. Great stuff man!

Not gonna lie, seeing my favorite Pokémon ever clutching the final battle after the rest of the team fainted brought a tear to my eye
This run should theoretically be much easier in bdsp considering the steel nerfs hurting byron and fairy types like cynthias togekiss losing to sludge bomb haunter

Except Spiritomb gains a weakness in Fairy right? It really carried in this run so I’d imagine that would be a big nerf to the team

You should've given the rival piplup, because empoleon's steel resists ghost in Gen 4, making it slightly harder than torterra, especially with drifblim and haunter resisting grass and being immune to ground.
Not to mention Rotom as well and it's also immune to Ground.
This was the MOST intense Nuzlock I’ve ever seen. That battle against Cynthia was having me on EDGE!!!

I'm genuinely wondering why, in the Cynthia battle, when you hit Lucario into obvious heal range you didn't take the opportunity to rest spiritomb? With Stone edge doing how little it was and the chance of missing why you didn't try rest-locking it until pressure stalled out stone edge? I'm not a pro-nuzlocker so I'd really appreciate the insight into the decision.
He used up his chesto berry against the Spiritomb, and being asleep for 3 turns would have allowed the Lucario to kill with shadow ball
@@destinygalearies7382 but with the heal coming it would have only been 2 turns, stone edge (which is what it was using due to most damage) was doing 45 damage, barring a crit (which you're planning on losing the tomb anyways so you can risk it) you can continuously loop rests until the stone edge is gone. Also seeing as SE has 80% accuracy he would have likely missed before hitting a crit. So unless I'm missing something about his attack plan (like needing a specific mon in after lucario dies) then rest stall could have gotten an extra kill or at least more damage.
@@Wildcat2017 it’s a good point that you’ve made. None of these nuzlockers play absolutely perfectly because they’re human like us. In hindsight, rest/pressure stall would have been ideal, but he chose otherwise, mistakenly, because he’s just a person and he’s trying to push out as much content as possible, as quickly as possible and is not afforded the luxury of “infinite time” so to speak.
@@HarveyMeadowlark I get that, I was more wondering if there was something I was missing as to why he didn't do this. Mostly because if I get here with a similar setup I want to make sure I don't get the rug pulled out from under me.

Amazing run Silph, mono ghost seemed like great fun and might look into a mono ghost competitive team to try out for singles and doubles.

Here's a question, why not use the Universal Randomizer to turn off trade evolutions so you can get those cooler trade evos?
By that point it isn't pokemon, and Silph likes his runs to be difficult
@@scrittle Well, fair enough on the difficulty point. That's actually a pretty valid way of looking at it and I get that.
I will not agree that it isn't Pokemon anymore. Especially in a run that excludes multiplayer content at all. It just cuts off so many badass pokemon.
@@scrittle It would still be Pokemon if the Universal Randomizer is used. You're limited enough with the list of usable Pokemon so why would you not give yourself as many options as possible? It's still gonna be difficult regardless.

So using the gba slot to get Gengar breaks the "No connecting with other games" rule but connecting with other games to get Spiritomb is ok?

Rule #8 says: "No connecting with other games for the purposes of trading/importing Pokémon, Items, etc."
By merely talking to 32 people in the underground, we're not trading or importing any Pokemon or items (the Odd Keystone is already given to you natively on Route 208) so I determined it was viable! 😀
I never really understood Paralysis luck until today when on my Emerald Nuzlocke I paralyzed Winona's Alteria with my Vibrava's dragon breath and she was paralyzed for 4 turns! Love your videos and once I actually complete my basic Nuzlocke I hope to do a more difficult one. Love your videos.

Those guide books are amazing! Especially when deciding what mono challenge you want to try, or if your nuzlocking for the first time they will be an immense help! Definitely will be coping some of them!

Precisely! That was exactly the motivation for them. Having done quite a few now I want them to be a bit more accessible to the average person, and this cuts away the crazy research required initially!

i tried out a bug type only nuzlocke and whited out two hop because he got 10 crits in a row. never doing that again

If you think about it, you can't kill ghosts, so technically this is still a deathless run! Congrats!
I like to think that in the end, since Spiritomb died first the rock it was in acted as a vessel for the other ghost types to go into.
Of all nuzlockers out there I've seen, only you and Jaden really stand out to me for you guys' absorbing narrating.
13:26 I’ve recently been doing a new run in platinum and that Mismagius was straight from hell it gave me three defeats and forced to level up my Luxio to level 25 before I was able to come up with a strategy to take it out

Rather than a monotype Nuzlock, try a STABlock. Normal Nuzlock rules, except your Pokemon can only have STAB moves. I think it would be an interesting challenge. In order to have type coverage, you would have to have a Pokemon of that type.

Hey Silph, I know that this channel is sort of dedicated to Pokémon, but what about a Nuzlocke in a different game?
In “LISA: The Painful”, a turn-based RPG, there’s a massive array of characters you can recruit to your team in a variety of different areas. On your quest to “find the last living girl”, you’ll also go through lots of battles with fun animations, so you can still do your usual combat commentary. Whether you take my idea in mind or not, good video bro.
Silph has a strategic niche in Pokemon so the likelihood of Silph doing anything outside said franchise is slim. Lisa the Painful is a great game even if Silph doesn't play it

Something else about giving Barry Turtwig has another benefit. It learns Bite and Crunch, which are super effective against Ghost

I'd say Giratina is fair game for the future. You get it super late and it's weak to Cynthia's Garchomp. It's not as OP as one might think.

I like how there's a ghost gym where the ace one shots your entire roster and Cyrus runs Houndoom, Weavile and Honchkrow, but you get through all of those deathless only to lose almost everyone vs Cynthia. Says something about how hard she can be for challenge runs when she's more dangerous than the trainers who practically try to counter pick your team
