Brand new hunter here. My friends have tried to get me to go for a few years now. I was very nervous about doing it right. I researched the shot placements and practiced practiced and practiced some more with my rifle. I was put into a buddies stand at 430 pm and shot my first deer at 518 pm. This did not make me a hunter, it only fueled my desire to know more. I had a chance to take another on the same weekend, but it was in brush and I really didn’t have good vision so I let it go. Channels like this feed good knowledge and advise and really appreciate it. I will continue to practice, I am going to help in the off season to care for the land and see what next season brings and learn as much as I can so I can be a good steward of the sport
This video really hits home man, I spent almost 8 years following bad hunting advise on a dream piece of private hunting property in Central IL, I lost the hunting rights last year and almost quit hunting all together then I found your channel and THP and hunting beast, while all 3 have different opinions and tactics, theirs lots to be learned from these channels. Years ago I bought a Hunter Body Suit. Everyone said I was crazy for paying that much for it.....I still have it and it's still in great shape and I'm always warm and they are still freezing in their Walmart clothes.

Just wanted to say Thank you for all of the information over the years. I'm a public land stalk n still hunter in the UP. Over the last two years I've seen more large bucks than any other time in my life- now I just have to get them into that 35 yard range more consistently. I bought 1 bottle of Tinks 69 in 1986, that's the last and only scent I've ever bought. I was wearing rubber boots and clearing a path to my stands since the 80's. Finally someone to validate my theories. Thank you so much for your common sense approach to hunting.

Great video, wish I had this advice 20 years ago and been smart enough to put it to practice. I appreciate your honesty, it is refreshing to listen to someone speak the truth and it’s easy to see your heart is to help others not to sale products. I canceled all my hunting shows because I got sick of the fake propaganda. I can say you have helped me learn and rekindle the desire to actually hunt. Downloaded your app this season Jeff. Took my father in law out last weekend on a 86% night and saw the second most deer in a single hunt ever on our property. He was able to shoot his first buck and it was an amazing experience. Appreciate all the videos man thank you !
Jeff. I found your channel last year, and threw out my usual approaches and followed your advice on design and hunting strategies and was able to kill my target buck on 11-7. Thank you for what you do.
Great video!! I found myself agreeing out loud a few times throughout it, lol! I employ the very same tactics to hunting, and you are right that some deer will inevitably end up downwind of you- it’s just going to happen. But, one thing I would add is this- HUNT THE DOES like you would hunt for that big buck! If you get careless with the does in your hunting plot then I guarantee you your hunting success will drastically diminish! Once the does know you’re there, they will most likely avoid the area all together or simply wait for you to leave before they get on their feet. When the rut hits and you wonder why you’re not seeing any bucks, maybe it’s because the does don’t want another encounter with you and subsequently have lead the bucks far and away from your stand. Believe me- there’s just as much caution (if not more) that should be used with the does on your property as those big bucks that we all love to pursue!
Hey I just wanted to say thank you for all the great advice! I’ve been hunting deer since I was 12 and I’m almost 21 now but with in the last two years I’ve gotten into deer hunting a lot more. My dad thought me how to hunt and never truly hunted. Meaning he just said go out whenever u can and never taught me about winds or stand placement. Well this year was my big year I have been taken all of your advice and even purchased the HuntWise app and started grinding this spring summer and fall to improve whatever I could. I hunt in southeast Pennsylvania and was able to shoot a quality buck and 3 does. I could have shoot deer every time I went out but listened to your advice and I paid off!!! I have one doe tag left but I’m gonna need to hunt public land to fill it given the fact I don’t have any private land for it. But once again THANK YOU for passing along your knowledge and helping me grow and as a hunter and I will continue to grow every year. Please keep up the great videos!!
Last year I sold ALL of my old clothing and purchased all new high quality clothing. What a difference in comfort and usability in the field. Great advice on all aspects of the hunt.

Been following you for awhile now, you put that fire in me to become a better hunter, which it did. Harvested my first 3 year old buck this year and ive been hunting the "wrong way" for years. Appreciate all the hard work and time you put into helping people. Not sure the ol lady liked the fact i bought high quality gear though 🤔 lol.

Nice to watch videos and get honest information. I have definitely fallen into commercial traps and wasted money over the years and found what you said, skill is most important, if your stand is in the right location you don’t need anything else. The deer will come.
I'm 27 years old and this is my first year hunting. I've experienced a huge learning curve as I have only seen 2 deer this year and both didn't give me a shot. It's discouraging at times but I know I'll get one one day. -Greenville, SC
Your advice is so true. My first hunting boots were store brand and they literally fell apart in a couple years and name brand boot you mentioned I bought and only $50 more and they are great still solid
Love the videos, live in maine. My father in law had a 20 year old bushnell scope that started to fog up. He contacted them and sent it out and they sent him a brand new scope, no questions asked. 20 years old and they thought he still deserved to get his money worth. When it comes to warmth or comfort, I'll spend a little more gradly.
Where you buy is HUGE. The gear doesn't have to be new either. I usually focus on the products that were rated high but are now "inferior" to the new and improved shiny new box unit.
I waited to buy my Mathews Traverse until the next bows came out. Best decision and bow I’ve ever purchased! Unless you’re well off, or a Mathews pro staffer....lol....it’s hard to get the latest and greatest on a budget.
I wear flannel shirts that are over 30 years old. Wear more like a jacket but they are warm and I love them. We’re my PawPaw’s back in the late 70s and I wear them now
I love the tips with everything you provide. This was my best hunting year yet and I would have to say it is due to your videos. Despite not shooting a buck yet, this was my first time in my 4 years of hunting that I was actually able to get an opportunity to actually pass a buck. Usually I just hunted and never saw a buck. This was definitely my most successful year but a mature buck just never crossed paths with me just young ones. I only hunt small permission parcels so I just have to work with what I have and that means I won’t always get an opportunity at a mature buck. Last year I had several shooters on of my properties but I just hunted poorly.
I do use a scent contraption. I don’t use it to cover my bad planning or mistakes I use it as an extra to maybe buy me a few more moments to get a shot off or have a deer not bust out that catches a bit of my wind. I do absolutely think it helps but as you say it will not cover up for poor planning.

Taking care of the gear that takes care of you (boots, clothes) is one of the biggest money savers. I have some Irish Setters I've had for over 10 years and are in great shape strictly because I take care of them. Same for some of the camo I own. If I'm going to invest $200+ into a layered jacket to keep me warm in the winter I'm more inclined to treat it with care so it'll last.
I add HuntWise/huntcast to list. Low/high pressures, cold fronts, barometric pressure changes can be found at any reputable weather app. I paid for premium huntwise app to test. My experience in my woods ended up being the exact opposite to huntcast predictions. Had I sat on the couch on days predicted to be low, I would have experienced a real crappy season. Albeit, this was a seasonally warm season. Enjoy your content and for all aspects of hunting, quality optics are key.
Really sorry to hear that Todd...it is the exact way I have hunted for nearly 30 years and the #1 reason I have found more success than anyone else anywhere i have hunted. Including all 9 bucks for my family this season 😉 The proof is in the pudding, as they say...for 3 decades. One of the problems is that you have to do everything else right...HuntCast just shows you the best day to hunt.
I whole heartedly believe your an ethical hunter and all 9 of your deer are put to use. I only kill one a year because that’s all the deer I can eat in 4 months time without wasting meat, so my one to your nine doesn’t bother me. I did everything right on a day the app gave me a 20% chance a first light. Zero deer “stars” that day. 3:45pm brought an 11 point in on grunt call and arrowed him at 15 yards. Days prior App had 4 and 4.5 deer “stars” with times range almost all day. Saw little to no activity. I agree with a significant amount of your knowledge that you share and don’t question your abilities. Just don’t assume others abilities are poor because we disagree with your product
Thank you Jeff for touching on the arrow set up. Ignore the fade and practice what works for you. Use to be smallest and quick arrow set up and now it’s heavy as possible. Some how deer still get shot regardless. Just curious Jeff if you ever brought anyone to your property to show examples of what you talked about?
Yes it is a money making season for sure but over the years I have learned so many different things and talked to some very knowledgeable hunters that had some fantastic ideas.Charles Alshiemer,Barry and Gene Windsel,and a couple others.A lot of studies have been done and are still being done.One thing that I really know is when the rut comes around the bucks are very unpredictable.They go nuts.Good video and keep them coming.

I have a pair of lacrosse boots bought a few years ago. Feet never get wet or cold anymore. As far as clothing goes, been using some fleet farm stuff. Kept me warm in -15. Can’t complain with it.
I've averaged about 3 yrs from my Muck boots. One bad thing about rubber boots is that they really start to smell bad! Number 3 is by far the best on the list. I bet everyone either knows of someone who spent all their money on the gun and put crappy optics on or has done it them self! I've ordered up food plot seed from your friend in michigan the last couple yearsand have had good luck with it here in SE MN.

I love everything you say! Except. Don't know what your considering heavy but I personally like my 575 gr. Set up so I don't get hung up in the back of the shoulder on the exit quarter away shot. Sometimes I'm not always in the stand when the shot is placed.. and I rub my hat in the dirt at the bottom of my stand to try to cover up my scent
I have just started getting into archery hunting and spent some money and time using scent lures. Never drew deer in with them. Realize now that I don’t need to waste my money with them. Thanks for covering this topic. I’ll be doing a lot more hiking and scouting in the off season and invest time instead of money.
I love lacrosse alpha burlys, but I recently tried muck and dryshod....thier amazing, super comfortable. Also, wether u buy into the carbon technology or not, scent loc makes really nice clothes!
In the early 70's I had some Indian Buck Lure that was in a plastic bottle .I asked my Mom to smell it and she squeezed my hand as she pulled it to her nose and shot it up her nose .She ran into the bathroom and was trying to wash the scent out at the sink while I was telling her I was sorry over and over .
My one and only advisor on the screen for the past 3 years .. I've grown as a hunter and been way more successful at "hiding and manipulating " my bigger bucks from the orange army on the public hunting land
I have a bushnell on my 30.06 that I’ve had since a kid and I was hunting in the Pennsylvania snow and snow got on my lenses and I got so much moisture in the scope it was unusable. Took my dads 30.06 out that hasn’t been shot in a few years and missed two giant bucks. 😑
Jeff, I hit a buck earlier this season with an expandable broadhead that should have been a pass through but ended up getting minimal penetration. This resulted in no blood trail and no recovery of that buck. I now feel myself drawn towards getting a “fancy” heavy arrow setup for next season to ensure in the future that I will always get pass throughs. Wouldn’t the money spent for a heavier arrow setup be worth the gain of confidence and overall lethality of your bow?

In south MS and plot I’m hunting today last year was pure gulf rye grass seeing 8-10 deer wasn’t a problem. Killed 1 buck. Swapped to wheat and oats mix this year. I’ve seen 2 deer in this plot all season

I manage 3 leases in upstate SC. Total 850 ac. These are timber company leases that get harvested at different times. We use food plots n feeders. Access is the issue n of course pressure. Long season. Hard to relate to many of your strategies here. Yes we have a doe factory. Yes deer are mostly nocturnal. Please do a video on our environment. It is very different. Thank you 🙏 🦌🇺🇸

I bought 2 stands last season from jack after watching your videos.. are they comfy...yes, are they heavy built...yes....but they are loud. They make a horrible creaking noise where the seat frame makes contact to the upright frame. Jack made it right on one of them by sending me new one that was better, but left me hanging on the other one. I don’t even use them anymore because of the noise.
Jeff, you made another interesting video. However you tend to be talking ideal conditions (i.e. your own decent size property with terrain that dictates deer travel routes). Although our comments about Family Tradition’s Treestands are true and they’re really great people, I won’t use high end comfortable stands like they make for one reason - thieves. On one eighty acre property I had hunted on, I had three stands pilfered. I’m not going to buy a super nice stand for poachers and crooks. Additionally in the flat wooded crop lands where I hunt, deer travel is often altered annually by crop rotation so we do things and use certain products to guide/funnel deer directions. We have had success with simple items like lemon ammonia, real vanilla and apple juice concentrate do the job of adjusting deer movement. Do you use winter peas in your brassica blend plots?
Jeff, You may have a video out already on this , but , in your opinion , what’s the best camera for the buck ? Are the cellular cameras a good investment ? Not looking to spend a fortune , but would like the best quality for the best price . Great videos , Brian
I have an old scent blocker coat that is still kicking strong. Its about 20 years old or so. Edit: im not saying the scent blocker tech actually works just that it is still a functional coat it keeps ya warm for mild winter weather above 20 degrees and It has only one little tear in it

Talking about mickys, aka bunny boots i still wear the white ones on the ice every year. Great point on the optics. I aquired a set of used sworovsky. 10x42 and not even on the same planted as any other 10x42.
I agree with everything you’ve said besides the arrow set up, to me penetration is good thing for someone to worry about. And yes obviously practice but to say not to worry about that I disagree
He isn’t saying just throw ur arrow set up out the window and “don’t worry about it” he is saying if you are a good hunter, then focus more on the right arrows for your bow and draw weight and length, instead of wasting money and time on very fancy arrow setups that some people think are just going to make them accurate if they have a fancy arrow, but if you are a good hunter and a good shot then regardless of the arrow you are going to kill deer or whatever else that is what he is saying
WWO so literally what you just said was if you’re a good shot, regardless of your arrow you will kill stuff which is completed false, I’m not saying by any means it has to be a fancy arrow set up but you should be focusing on making sure what you are shooting to kill an animal, isn’t going to fail you in anyway, I’m not here to argue all I said was I disagree with that statement. @@purerushoutdoors7624 no that’s not what I said actually, I said what Jeff was trying to say which was focus more on accuracy and hunting skill rather than thinking a fancy arrow setup is going to make you kill deer, because there is a lot of stuff that you can buy such as 300$ arrows that you do not need to kill deer and they really aren’t going to help you it’s just preference, but some people believe that if you buy very fancy stuff that it is going to make you kill deer and that is not true if you are a bad hunter
Penetration is a good thing, we need it, I don’t think anyone should be overly worried it about, regardless of draw weight, if your using a compound, don’t worry about it, just practice, if your using a #35 pound longbow, then start building your arrow with “bad penetration” in mind. That’s my opinion, and was my grandpas... we both use/used low poundage longbows. Of course there is nothing wrong with tinkering setups, it’s good fun, I think what Jeff is saying is doing tinkering to a point of bad returns on your actual shooting! I know guys that fall into that category for sure. Take care.
I’m 48 and I’ve hunted with a longbow exclusively for 20 years and killed at least two deer every year with it. If your arrow set up is not right you will not kill as many deer with it no matter how good you shoot. That is a fact

Curious though,, at the end of this video you’re spraying down your clothing with some sort of scent cover (killer) Do you put much credence in them? Hi Wayne, I love the scent killer sprays for reducing or eliminating our entrance and exit trail scent that we leave. We use ElimiShield and the science behind it makes a lot of sense. I just don't believe anything really helps you when on stand and a nature deer is downwind!
I agree on most of the ways hunters wastes money, however I disagree with the scent contraption idea. Yes if u r positioned correctly down wind and a deer comes out in front great, but what about when they come behind u and get ur sent. I have used ozonics for the past 5 years. I received it as a gift and I thought it was just a gimmick, but it actually works. Not to mention when ur hunting and the wind changes direction. I have shot many bucks and alot of them r due to the ozonics. So yes I agrees on the other wasteful items but as far as the scent contraption, don't go hunting without it.
As usual agree with most of what you teach. I would say that I don’t use scents but I have a buddy that does and his logic is he doesn’t believe that it will change his hunt but it does give him confidence to sit longer and go more and some people need that. 🤷♂️ to each his own.
Used scopes don't last long around here. Especially if there is a warranty . I've known a few guys that buy old scopes smash them and send them back in for warranty and they get the latest and greatest as that old scope is discontinued.
I need some new hunting clothes but more skill is a must as far as guns go you r right on I have a buddy that told me u should spend double on optics and he isn't even a hunter but a very smart guy I enjoy and look forward to your videos I usually go back in your channel and rewatch to make sure I didn't miss anything or if I have a question You've already answered in a different video I've used doe estrus sent before and the buck was waiting in the early morning 40 yards from my stand when I started climbing up he started running off never to return it only cost me 5 dollars to ruin my morning hunt
In New Jersey we cant leave treestands in the woods, let alone expensive ones. Here an expensive one lasts 1/4 as long as a cheap one, but both will be ripped before the season is over.
Weather definitely Trump's the moon by a long shot.. But my hunting buddies and I have always had some fun thinking about the moon phases in preparation for a scheduled hunt which at the end of the day we were hunting the same week every year.. just some food for thought Thanks for the best info!
Hi Jeff, Can you do a video on overpressuring your land whether private or public? I know you mention it alot. Example: if the weather is perfect for my best morning stand on Wednesday and Friday, and I hunt both days, and practiceing scent control and have a good plan for entry/exit did I over pressure my spot? Did I spook deer whether i saw deer or not?

I don’t see how you can put prefabricated blinds (regardless of brand) you can built a much better blind for a quarter or the cost that will last forever I’ve built welded frame with fiberglass panel that are so much better than the prefab my dads is all wood (it’s 30 years old) built like a house he did have to replace the roof shingles a few years ago. Prefab is a huge waist of money.
Ouch! Rebuke accepted lol. Guilty of a few of these but I do see your side of it. I use Evercalm on my boots walking into the stand and also use Scentlok to help with swirly winds. BUT, I don't rely on these as a cure all because there's no such thing with a whitetail nose. There's no substitute for having the right entry/exit, stand location and wind direction that's for sure
🙂 The carbon clothes gets me the most...I've wasted a lot of dollars in the past on various brands. If folks hunt well then not only do hunters not need this stuff but they won't want to use it. I enjoy not using any of it and consistently finding a high success level....and that's with people willing to pay me to use it 😬
There are some really high quality gear options out there when you eliminate the carbon 🙂 I appreciate you and respect you greatly Jim...just stopped using the carbon clothes 12-15 years ago and will never look back. Used it for a while tho! Ended up just treating it and washing it as normal hunting clothes.

My work boots ran $200+ and would only last a year at most. So spending $200 for good hunting boot makes sense. But it still hurts to spend $450 on a rifle and then have to spend another $500 for optics. I have a friend that has a $1000.00 scope on an $800 308. Don't get me wrong, you can shoot a clay pigeon hanging in a tree at 300 yards with it, but it still hurts.
Slightly disagree about the scopes sometimes you can find great deals on vortex and other brands for less than 400 with a lifetime warranty. Scope quality has improved while price has dropped. Sure an 800 dollar scope will likely be better than the 3-400 dollar one but for most hunters they won’t even notice.

Just wanted to say Thank you for all of the information over the years. I'm a public land stalk n still hunter in the UP. Over the last two years I've seen more large bucks than any other time in my life- now I just have to get them into that 35 yard range more consistently. I bought 1 bottle of Tinks 69 in 1986, that's the last and only scent I've ever bought. I was wearing rubber boots and clearing a path to my stands since the 80's. Finally someone to validate my theories. Thank you so much for your common sense approach to hunting.

Downloaded your app this season Jeff. Took my father in law out last weekend on a 86% night and saw the second most deer in a single hunt ever on our property. He was able to shoot his first buck and it was an amazing experience. Appreciate all the videos man thank you !

Great video!! I found myself agreeing out loud a few times throughout it, lol! I employ the very same tactics to hunting, and you are right that some deer will inevitably end up downwind of you- it’s just going to happen. But, one thing I would add is this- HUNT THE DOES like you would hunt for that big buck! If you get careless with the does in your hunting plot then I guarantee you your hunting success will drastically diminish! Once the does know you’re there, they will most likely avoid the area all together or simply wait for you to leave before they get on their feet. When the rut hits and you wonder why you’re not seeing any bucks, maybe it’s because the does don’t want another encounter with you and subsequently have lead the bucks far and away from your stand. Believe me- there’s just as much caution (if not more) that should be used with the does on your property as those big bucks that we all love to pursue!
Hey I just wanted to say thank you for all the great advice! I’ve been hunting deer since I was 12 and I’m almost 21 now but with in the last two years I’ve gotten into deer hunting a lot more. My dad thought me how to hunt and never truly hunted. Meaning he just said go out whenever u can and never taught me about winds or stand placement. Well this year was my big year I have been taken all of your advice and even purchased the HuntWise app and started grinding this spring summer and fall to improve whatever I could. I hunt in southeast Pennsylvania and was able to shoot a quality buck and 3 does. I could have shoot deer every time I went out but listened to your advice and I paid off!!! I have one doe tag left but I’m gonna need to hunt public land to fill it given the fact I don’t have any private land for it. But once again THANK YOU for passing along your knowledge and helping me grow and as a hunter and I will continue to grow every year. Please keep up the great videos!!
Last year I sold ALL of my old clothing and purchased all new high quality clothing. What a difference in comfort and usability in the field.

Nice to watch videos and get honest information. I have definitely fallen into commercial traps and wasted money over the years and found what you said, skill is most important, if your stand is in the right location you don’t need anything else. The deer will come.
I'm 27 years old and this is my first year hunting. I've experienced a huge learning curve as I have only seen 2 deer this year and both didn't give me a shot. It's discouraging at times but I know I'll get one one day. -Greenville, SC
Your advice is so true. My first hunting boots were store brand and they literally fell apart in a couple years and name brand boot you mentioned I bought and only $50 more and they are great still solid

Love the videos, live in maine. My father in law had a 20 year old bushnell scope that started to fog up. He contacted them and sent it out and they sent him a brand new scope, no questions asked. 20 years old and they thought he still deserved to get his money worth. When it comes to warmth or comfort, I'll spend a little more gradly.

Where you buy is HUGE. The gear doesn't have to be new either. I usually focus on the products that were rated high but are now "inferior" to the new and improved shiny new box unit.

I wear flannel shirts that are over 30 years old. Wear more like a jacket but they are warm and I love them. We’re my PawPaw’s back in the late 70s and I wear them now
I love the tips with everything you provide. This was my best hunting year yet and I would have to say it is due to your videos. Despite not shooting a buck yet, this was my first time in my 4 years of hunting that I was actually able to get an opportunity to actually pass a buck. Usually I just hunted and never saw a buck. This was definitely my most successful year but a mature buck just never crossed paths with me just young ones. I only hunt small permission parcels so I just have to work with what I have and that means I won’t always get an opportunity at a mature buck. Last year I had several shooters on of my properties but I just hunted poorly.
I do use a scent contraption. I don’t use it to cover my bad planning or mistakes I use it as an extra to maybe buy me a few more moments to get a shot off or have a deer not bust out that catches a bit of my wind. I do absolutely think it helps but as you say it will not cover up for poor planning.

Taking care of the gear that takes care of you (boots, clothes) is one of the biggest money savers. I have some Irish Setters I've had for over 10 years and are in great shape strictly because I take care of them. Same for some of the camo I own. If I'm going to invest $200+ into a layered jacket to keep me warm in the winter I'm more inclined to treat it with care so it'll last.

I add HuntWise/huntcast to list. Low/high pressures, cold fronts, barometric pressure changes can be found at any reputable weather app. I paid for premium huntwise app to test. My experience in my woods ended up being the exact opposite to huntcast predictions. Had I sat on the couch on days predicted to be low, I would have experienced a real crappy season. Albeit, this was a seasonally warm season.

Really sorry to hear that Todd...it is the exact way I have hunted for nearly 30 years and the #1 reason I have found more success than anyone else anywhere i have hunted. Including all 9 bucks for my family this season 😉 The proof is in the pudding, as they say...for 3 decades. One of the problems is that you have to do everything else right...HuntCast just shows you the best day to hunt.
I whole heartedly believe your an ethical hunter and all 9 of your deer are put to use. I only kill one a year because that’s all the deer I can eat in 4 months time without wasting meat, so my one to your nine doesn’t bother me. I did everything right on a day the app gave me a 20% chance a first light. Zero deer “stars” that day. 3:45pm brought an 11 point in on grunt call and arrowed him at 15 yards. Days prior App had 4 and 4.5 deer “stars” with times range almost all day. Saw little to no activity. I agree with a significant amount of your knowledge that you share and don’t question your abilities. Just don’t assume others abilities are poor because we disagree with your product

Thank you Jeff for touching on the arrow set up. Ignore the fade and practice what works for you. Use to be smallest and quick arrow set up and now it’s heavy as possible. Some how deer still get shot regardless.

Yes it is a money making season for sure but over the years I have learned so many different things and talked to some very knowledgeable hunters that had some fantastic ideas.Charles Alshiemer,Barry and Gene Windsel,and a couple others.A lot of studies have been done and are still being done.One thing that I really know is when the rut comes around the bucks are very unpredictable.They go nuts.Good video and keep them coming.

I have a pair of lacrosse boots bought a few years ago. Feet never get wet or cold anymore. As far as clothing goes, been using some fleet farm stuff. Kept me warm in -15. Can’t complain with it.

I've averaged about 3 yrs from my Muck boots. One bad thing about rubber boots is that they really start to smell bad! Number 3 is by far the best on the list. I bet everyone either knows of someone who spent all their money on the gun and put crappy optics on or has done it them self! I've ordered up food plot seed from your friend in michigan the last couple yearsand have had good luck with it here in SE MN.

I love everything you say! Except. Don't know what your considering heavy but I personally like my 575 gr. Set up so I don't get hung up in the back of the shoulder on the exit quarter away shot. Sometimes I'm not always in the stand when the shot is placed.. and I rub my hat in the dirt at the bottom of my stand to try to cover up my scent
I have just started getting into archery hunting and spent some money and time using scent lures. Never drew deer in with them. Realize now that I don’t need to waste my money with them. Thanks for covering this topic. I’ll be doing a lot more hiking and scouting in the off season and invest time instead of money.
I love lacrosse alpha burlys, but I recently tried muck and dryshod....thier amazing, super comfortable. Also, wether u buy into the carbon technology or not, scent loc makes really nice clothes!
In the early 70's I had some Indian Buck Lure that was in a plastic bottle .I asked my Mom to smell it and she squeezed my hand as she pulled it to her nose and shot it up her nose .She ran into the bathroom and was trying to wash the scent out at the sink while I was telling her I was sorry over and over .

I have a bushnell on my 30.06 that I’ve had since a kid and I was hunting in the Pennsylvania snow and snow got on my lenses and I got so much moisture in the scope it was unusable. Took my dads 30.06 out that hasn’t been shot in a few years and missed two giant bucks. 😑

Jeff, I hit a buck earlier this season with an expandable broadhead that should have been a pass through but ended up getting minimal penetration. This resulted in no blood trail and no recovery of that buck. I now feel myself drawn towards getting a “fancy” heavy arrow setup for next season to ensure in the future that I will always get pass throughs. Wouldn’t the money spent for a heavier arrow setup be worth the gain of confidence and overall lethality of your bow?

In south MS and plot I’m hunting today last year was pure gulf rye grass seeing 8-10 deer wasn’t a problem. Killed 1 buck. Swapped to wheat and oats mix this year. I’ve seen 2 deer in this plot all season

I manage 3 leases in upstate SC. Total 850 ac. These are timber company leases that get harvested at different times. We use food plots n feeders. Access is the issue n of course pressure. Long season. Hard to relate to many of your strategies here. Yes we have a doe factory. Yes deer are mostly nocturnal. Please do a video on our environment. It is very different. Thank you 🙏 🦌🇺🇸
The list on how to waste $$$ is spot on. Everything on that list is made to "catch hunters" and will not improve your deer hunting odds.

I bought 2 stands last season from jack after watching your videos.. are they comfy...yes, are they heavy built...yes....but they are loud. They make a horrible creaking noise where the seat frame makes contact to the upright frame. Jack made it right on one of them by sending me new one that was better, but left me hanging on the other one. I don’t even use them anymore because of the noise.
Jeff, you made another interesting video. However you tend to be talking ideal conditions (i.e. your own decent size property with terrain that dictates deer travel routes). Although our comments about Family Tradition’s Treestands are true and they’re really great people, I won’t use high end comfortable stands like they make for one reason - thieves. On one eighty acre property I had hunted on, I had three stands pilfered. I’m not going to buy a super nice stand for poachers and crooks. Additionally in the flat wooded crop lands where I hunt, deer travel is often altered annually by crop rotation so we do things and use certain products to guide/funnel deer directions. We have had success with simple items like lemon ammonia, real vanilla and apple juice concentrate do the job of adjusting deer movement.

I have an old scent blocker coat that is still kicking strong. Its about 20 years old or so.
Edit: im not saying the scent blocker tech actually works just that it is still a functional coat it keeps ya warm for mild winter weather above 20 degrees and It has only one little tear in it

Talking about mickys, aka bunny boots i still wear the white ones on the ice every year. Great point on the optics. I aquired a set of used sworovsky. 10x42 and not even on the same planted as any other 10x42.

He isn’t saying just throw ur arrow set up out the window and “don’t worry about it” he is saying if you are a good hunter, then focus more on the right arrows for your bow and draw weight and length, instead of wasting money and time on very fancy arrow setups that some people think are just going to make them accurate if they have a fancy arrow, but if you are a good hunter and a good shot then regardless of the arrow you are going to kill deer or whatever else that is what he is saying

@@purerushoutdoors7624 no that’s not what I said actually, I said what Jeff was trying to say which was focus more on accuracy and hunting skill rather than thinking a fancy arrow setup is going to make you kill deer, because there is a lot of stuff that you can buy such as 300$ arrows that you do not need to kill deer and they really aren’t going to help you it’s just preference, but some people believe that if you buy very fancy stuff that it is going to make you kill deer and that is not true if you are a bad hunter
Penetration is a good thing, we need it, I don’t think anyone should be overly worried it about, regardless of draw weight, if your using a compound, don’t worry about it, just practice,
if your using a #35 pound longbow, then start building your arrow with “bad penetration” in mind. That’s my opinion, and was my grandpas... we both use/used low poundage longbows. Of course there is nothing wrong with tinkering setups, it’s good fun, I think what Jeff is saying is doing tinkering to a point of bad returns on your actual shooting! I know guys that fall into that category for sure. Take care.
I’m 48 and I’ve hunted with a longbow exclusively for 20 years and killed at least two deer every year with it. If your arrow set up is not right you will not kill as many deer with it no matter how good you shoot. That is a fact

Hi Wayne, I love the scent killer sprays for reducing or eliminating our entrance and exit trail scent that we leave. We use ElimiShield and the science behind it makes a lot of sense. I just don't believe anything really helps you when on stand and a nature deer is downwind!
I agree on most of the ways hunters wastes money, however I disagree with the scent contraption idea. Yes if u r positioned correctly down wind and a deer comes out in front great, but what about when they come behind u and get ur sent. I have used ozonics for the past 5 years. I received it as a gift and I thought it was just a gimmick, but it actually works. Not to mention when ur hunting and the wind changes direction. I have shot many bucks and alot of them r due to the ozonics. So yes I agrees on the other wasteful items but as far as the scent contraption, don't go hunting without it.
As usual agree with most of what you teach. I would say that I don’t use scents but I have a buddy that does and his logic is he doesn’t believe that it will change his hunt but it does give him confidence to sit longer and go more and some people need that. 🤷♂️ to each his own.
You’re right on with optics. You can always sell a rifle to upgrade but it’s hard to sell a used scope
Used scopes don't last long around here. Especially if there is a warranty . I've known a few guys that buy old scopes smash them and send them back in for warranty and they get the latest and greatest as that old scope is discontinued.

How do you differentiate immature buck sign from mature buck sign? Hunting on public ground in Missouri where game cameras aren't allowed
It's very hard to tell a difference between the two but if there is a lot of signs it usually means more mature deer
I need some new hunting clothes but more skill is a must as far as guns go you r right on I have a buddy that told me u should spend double on optics and he isn't even a hunter but a very smart guy I enjoy and look forward to your videos I usually go back in your channel and rewatch to make sure I didn't miss anything or if I have a question You've already answered in a different video I've used doe estrus sent before and the buck was waiting in the early morning 40 yards from my stand when I started climbing up he started running off never to return it only cost me 5 dollars to ruin my morning hunt
In New Jersey we cant leave treestands in the woods, let alone expensive ones. Here an expensive one lasts 1/4 as long as a cheap one, but both will be ripped before the season is over.
Really too bad! Fortunately that isn't typical of most hunting areas across the country!

Hi Jeff, Can you do a video on overpressuring your land whether private or public? I know you mention it alot. Example: if the weather is perfect for my best morning stand on Wednesday and Friday, and I hunt both days, and practiceing scent control and have a good plan for entry/exit did I over pressure my spot? Did I spook deer whether i saw deer or not?

I don’t see how you can put prefabricated blinds (regardless of brand) you can built a much better blind for a quarter or the cost that will last forever I’ve built welded frame with fiberglass panel that are so much better than the prefab my dads is all wood (it’s 30 years old) built like a house he did have to replace the roof shingles a few years ago. Prefab is a huge waist of money.

Ouch! Rebuke accepted lol. Guilty of a few of these but I do see your side of it. I use Evercalm on my boots walking into the stand and also use Scentlok to help with swirly winds. BUT, I don't rely on these as a cure all because there's no such thing with a whitetail nose. There's no substitute for having the right entry/exit, stand location and wind direction that's for sure
🙂 The carbon clothes gets me the most...I've wasted a lot of dollars in the past on various brands. If folks hunt well then not only do hunters not need this stuff but they won't want to use it. I enjoy not using any of it and consistently finding a high success level....and that's with people willing to pay me to use it 😬

There are some really high quality gear options out there when you eliminate the carbon 🙂 I appreciate you and respect you greatly Jim...just stopped using the carbon clothes 12-15 years ago and will never look back. Used it for a while tho! Ended up just treating it and washing it as normal hunting clothes.

My work boots ran $200+ and would only last a year at most. So spending $200 for good hunting boot makes sense. But it still hurts to spend $450 on a rifle and then have to spend another $500 for optics.
I have a friend that has a $1000.00 scope on an $800 308. Don't get me wrong, you can shoot a clay pigeon hanging in a tree at 300 yards with it, but it still hurts.
Slightly disagree about the scopes sometimes you can find great deals on vortex and other brands for less than 400 with a lifetime warranty. Scope quality has improved while price has dropped. Sure an 800 dollar scope will likely be better than the 3-400 dollar one but for most hunters they won’t even notice.
I am still using the same LaCrosse boots and liners from 20 years ago and they are just now beginning to show cracks in the soles.
