just found your channel and I have already listened to two videos, this is my favorite so far, and I got up and was putting away laundry and decluttering while listening. How motivating you are. Everything you said makes sense and I agree that you can accumulate too many small things, or extra, so you can feel like you just have a lot of stuff. But what I ended up with was a lot of cheap things, choosing quantity over quality. Then go into a wealthy person's home and they value quality, not quantity. So they might have fewer nice clothes, but they are such high quality and are actually put into use often, that the price tag might be worth it. I have lived my life ( I first typed in " lie ", maybe a freudian slip there) with poverty mentality. Now I know that if I make a mistake and donate something and then decide later that I need that again ( which I haven't known to happen so far ) then I can just go buy it with the new knowledge that I did need that after all, oh well, no big deal, keep moving and don't let that hinder the process. I'm so glad to be here, thanks for your great videos and I'm chewing away at this small, organized hoard and little at a time.
Thanks for this! The thing that I struggle the most with is attaching memories to objects which I do with almost everything (like holding on to old papers because I remember the time they were from, or other things because it triggers a specific memory that I don’t want to lose) I feel like I’m throwing away previous memories or versions of myself sometimes when decluttering, and so that’s something I’m trying to work on.
Great video! I agree that it is easier for affluent people to sustain a decluttered environment. I sometimes worry that I need to stock up on sale items or hang on to a tool so I don’t have to repurchase. Your recent video about accepting doubt as a part of life has helped me in that regard. Thanks for sharing with us! ❤
however, it is easier to become affluent in a decluttered home which in turn gives you more time to declutter. It is a snowball effect. The more I declutter the richer I get. The richer I get, the more I declutter.
Great video, and it is still hard to declutter, but worth it. My biggest belief is to slow or stop the incoming stuff. if you can stop or at least severely reduce the flow rate in then you can afford to work somewhat more slowly in your decluttering, but if the incoming is on full blast, then you will struggle to just find a place to sit and think about decluttering.
Four types of cluttering I've seen are: 1. My mother-in-law, who grew up in the depression--Save old junk because some day I may use it. (A closet full of plastic grocery bags. Expired food in the freezer. Many containers of putrid bacon grease in the refrigerator.) My Dad--Keep buying items he thinks the kids will want when he someday dies. My Mother--buying different kinds of collectibles (dolls, broaches, dog figurines, etc.) because in her mind, it helps define who she is. Me--I don't want that stuff after they've died but, holding on to some of it because I feel guilty getting rid of it.
Recently experienced the loss of several close relatives & went thru the process of getting rid of " stuff " as you mentioned . Very little of value , personally or monetarily , & the process was extremely time consuming & often difficult finding where / to whom everything should be given / donated / recycled . Advice to myself : write things down , make a will , & as I'm growing older, begin giving things to friends & family now so they have the option to accept or refuse my " stuff " . Then I can move on w/ my sharing / donating to eventually make it easier for those who will some day have to deal w/ what is left . 🥰
You have such a wonderful perspective on minimalism and life (the reality of the good, difficult, and the everyday!Thank you for sharing!!! ❤️❤️❤️ I love your channel so much!
All of this is so true....especially that other people really don't pay that much attention to what we are wearing. Also, that shopping gives us a high. I have bought for other people thinking I'm doing something great for someone else. In reality I think it was to be able to buy something with no guilt attached to it.
I think for me, one of the big blockers around decluttering (after the energy it takes, omg that is true) is where it goes after me. I try to be really mindful about not just throwing things in the trash which means that I need to find a new home for items. But that's hard for somethigns like cords that go to who knows what or projects I never finished
Great points, Elin, and so helpful to have you with your psychology background validate the ones I've been struggling with. It's a deeper take on the usual decluttering advice that some of us (I'm an HSP) can really appreciate. Thank you!💚💞
i recently decluttered and i have on piece that i created using shells from a beach and im connected to it because i created it and the beach is my favorite place in the world. and i live 3 hours away.. however my home decor used to be beach theme and now it’s not
I so love your videos my loveliest Elin🤍🤍 Thank you for everything you share and for the positive vibes of your amazing aura✨✨ You truly make our days brighter☀️🌞
Elin, another thoughtfully curated video. Ive been under a lot of heaviness lately, and today my declutter was simply one drawer in the kitchen. Im inspired to do a bit more after seeing this. Ps: What a beautiful wedding portrait in the background!
Very helpful - I agree that it is easier to part with possessions if you know that you can easily replace them (You can afford to replace them). I also believe ( and have witnessed in others) that if you are not a confident person you can mistakingly believe that possessions can help bolster your confidence. All very deep and complicated 🤯
Thank you so much for being real! I needed to know that the superficial world of fashion i've been caught up in these past few days doesn't require me to purchase more stuff. Praying for you girl!
Once again.. so good. You got me at "purchasing for other.." I had to laugh out loud. Thank YOU for creating this vid and sharing these insights with us struggle to no impulse buy.
There are many reasons (excuses) why people have cluttered homes, but I believe that to avoid clutter, you must have discipline every day of your life. For example, when you get mail, just go through it immediately and toss whatever is not important. It’s little things like that which add up over time.
Your comment about it being easier for the wealthy to declutter was not beside the point at all…I had never thought about it being easier for the wealthy but it is true. Can pay for housekeeping, storage if needed, replace things if needed, makes sense. And they usually have more space

My next major project is to declutter the crawl space in my house. It’s full of things I no longer need or want.

Soooooo true. The desire for new things that we dont need causes so much stress from our shiny new object syndrome

I feel that if I can get to the root emotions on why my mom keeps way too much, might help her. As I get older, I have some of the same tenderness!

Personally I believe happiness comes from our animals, although it can within loving relationships, but not everyone has that constant.

Thank you so much this was a great video as I declutter and cry a little bit but also let go
Side note, I love the way you display your wedding photos on that wall, the 3 hanging framed photos. Love that look!
OMG "Proof!" The BEST point!!! ❤

So welcome!💚
Love your content Aylin. I used to take my afternoon off once a month from work and that was my declutter time. 😊

Your wedding picture is beautiful.
Yes. This is all so true.
Not Decluttering is Harder Long term. 🙂
Hey there, heard Sigur Ros is coming to Minnesota this summer I believe. ❤
Yes I heard that too! 😉
love your videos!!!!!
Lovely video!
I took Instagram off to have one less Avenue of being bombarded by influencer brands and podcasts

I was wondering were you got the coffee table from your living room
My shopping is not for clothes, it's always for wellness items
