I always thought she was stunning and I was so surprised to hear from Korean friends that she is not considered beautiful in Korea - doesn't meet their beauty standard - seriously WTF !!! I love that she has a healthy appetite too ! Hwasa will always be beautiful and talented to me !
Yeah, there was at least one real idiot out there who left some dumbass comment somewhere, saying that 'Hwasa thinks she has a good body', but then the idiot complains about how 'she doesn't take care of it'.

Being a Vocalist REQUIRES her to be in at least 'decent' physical shape! AND she DANCES! She's likely in better shape than the idiot who sent that comment! What a joke some Koreans are!

Those who body shame others need to be shamed themselves (no matter who they are and no matter who they are trying to shame). They need to go back to school and not be allowed to graduate until they can learn to play well with others. They need reminded of the meaning of the word 'civilization' so they get the idea that their stupid negativity is not cool and is actually more than just 'unhelpful'. Trolling is not 'the cool thing' to do and neither is bullying.

Here's some of the backstory to Maria. We look at Ahn Hyejin and see a beautiful, charismatic, ridiculously talented woman, someone who's got it all and shines brightly, which is what her stage name Hwasa means. In real life when she tried to sign with kpop agencies she was rejected at auditions and bluntly told she was fat and ugly. Fortunately RBW co-CEO Kim Dohoon had the novel idea of assembling and promoting a girl group based on their talent as singers and performers rather than the usual formula of choosing girls based primarily on how their looks fit a pre-conceived marketing concept such as cute, innocent, sexy or girl crush. KDH plucked the members of Mamamoo from the pile of audition rejects and retreads from other companies and gambled on their vocal talent and creativity despite warnings from industry insiders that Mamamoo would fail miserably. When Mamamoo debuted petitions were circulated to have Hwasa removed from the group because people said she didn't fit kpop beauty and body standards. Controversies repeatedly erupted over her choice of sexy stage outfits and even what she wore when going to the airport. Mamamoo has always been one of kpop's biggest shit magnets because they've never fit into the prevailing standards regarding beauty, fashion, gender, sexuality, or proper behavior by polite female idols in general. They're strong, powerful women who stand up for themselves and their beliefs but they've never cultivated a bad girl image and instead their music often carries messages of self-love, empowerment, and acceptance of others for their uniqueness and individuality.
Maria was the name Hwasa chose when she was baptized as a Catholic and as the comment stated Maria is a song she wrote to comfort herself. It's the title track on her Maria EP, which ends with a bookend song called LMM (Lost My Mind) that also deals with the irrational and unjustified hate she receives just for being herself. Both songs are deeply personal and they were two of the most powerful and impactful kpop songs of 2020. Maria, LMM and Mamamoo's song Hip (which was co-written by Hwasa) are three of most prominent kpop songs addressing internet bullying and malicious sm comments. As the saying goes, in these songs they're attempting to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
Btw, LMM is a gorgeous ballad with an equally gorgeous cinematic MV and I highly recommend it. LMM was my personal pick for 2020 song of the year.

We all think she's beautiful and sexy BUT can you believe Entertainment companies rejected her over and over saying her looks and skin tone were not to Korean beauty standards. She has confidently said that she told herself that if she wasn't up to Korean beauty standards, she was going to make her own standards. *MARIA* comes from that statement.

How she is challenging Korean beauty standards and kicking them in the face is my favorite thing. Queen Hwasa always. She showed them what real adult sexy is and owned it.
Maria is so catchy but more importantly it’s such a great self love anthem !! Hwasa is actually one of the most hated kpop idols ever and is critiqued for everything she does (eg not wearing a bra to the airport), and has always been told she’d never succeed because she’s too ugly. The kpop industry is v toxic but I think hwasa is definitely one of the idols that get treated worse and she says it got so bad she contemplated suicide, which is why there’s a scene where she’s playing with scissors. This is such an important song for anyone suffering from toxic beauty standards, but especially for Koreans which has arguably the most toxic beauty standards ever.

When I first stumbled across Mamamoo, I was IMMEDIATELY DRAWN TO HWASA, and I don't know much of the group but I do know some of the controversy surrounding them and when I heard HWASA was not considered the goddess she is, I was APPALLED 😱 It's nice to see where they are now and I love to see how this song was a letter to herself ❤

"Maria" is such a powerful song, especially as a message for herself. She's been bashed and battered by haters constantly since her debut most notably for being curvy (knetz seem to think women should be 40 pounds) and for daring to dress like she does. She's not even the only one in her group who is attacked for wearing what she wants, either. In Hwasa's song "LMM" you can see her expression of people attacking her, but at the end of the day it's not them that matters. What matters is that she loves herself and has the affection of her friends, family, and fans. Hwasa is such a strong woman and an inspiration. That's why she's been my bias for 7 years now.
I very HIGHLY recommend her two songs "LMM" and "Be Calm". They are slower paced than "Maria" but showcase her as she is - as Ahn Hyejin who is beautiful and shining.

I am a BTS Army. I recently found Hwasa/Mamamoo and Bibi. They are amazingly talented women and so refreshing from the normal kpop girls most of us know. Like Bangtan, they are not afraid to speak their mind and unpretentious too. I hope they get to collaborate or feature when the boys are all finished with the enlistment.

When Hwasa first auditioned she was told that was "too fat abd not pretty" so she should give up trying to be a start and choose s different career.
She went home and cried her eyes out, but felt compelled to comfort herself by watching recordings of her favorite artists (including Beyonce and Rihanna). At first it made her even day knowing she could never do what they do, but she kept watching anyway.
At some point she stood up, left the tears and the judgement behind and made a promise to herself and the world:

Although Hwasa is not my favourite Mamamoo lady, in my view, she has the best solo songs.

I can't remember which film is referred to with the many lighters being offered to light the cigarette. It could be Malena but that seems to recent of a movie. You or someone may know?
The song and the visuals are insane but Maria has such a deep meaning is almost a crime don't analyze the lyrics and the mv.
Hwasa said Maria is the crystallized tears and sweat that she shed.
The MV starts with a crime scene, Hwasa is dead and people are still trying to take some shots of her. A red hair Maria (an alter ego after Hwasa baptismal name) is watching the scene careless. Hwasa funeral, only empty chairs with invitation on it and with its back turned, nobody cares like she says in the lyrics.
Here an homage to the most beautiful and powerful scene in Malena movie, with all those men offering their lighter to her. Malena is the most beautiful woman of a SMALL village (it can be a comparison to South Korea restricted mentality), because of her looks and her solitary state, she is an object of lust for all the town's men and of hatred for its women…after many vicissitudes and a very hard time she understood that her beauty is her salvation. So she cuts her black hair and dyes by red her hair, changing her attitude as well. We can clearly see a difference among Hwasa and Maria, both in outfits and attitude.
In the table scene we can see a bloodstained Maria with rubber boots and a pretty simple outfit at a table with people all dressed up, they're keyboard warriors.
Again lyrics "You all worked hard hating. If you knock me down. Does that feed you?" She's serving them with all sort of things. The table is full with jewels, trove of tapes, mics, cds, diamonds…but they're just looking at those picky. Maria with a bored face is watching them and then she starts happily eating a brain. The difference among Maria and those people is so strong and impactful. I've also read that eat someone's brain means pester someone.
The triangular tub is also interesting, she's bathing in milk and rose petals like a Queen and her skin is so white, but once again she looks bored and then she starts to make 'no' gesture with her finger with a smirking face. Like 'I don't need to be pale, I'm beautiful like this'… probably a references to all hateful comments she gets about her bronze skin since ages.
We're back to Hwasa, she's trapped like in a mental hospital with a straitjacket, all her body is constrained by laces…this once again can be interpreted as the restricted South Korea mentality. They're monitoring her, pencils (comments) are pointed at her and she is trying to escape from this kind of net (network) until she finds a crown with diamonds and nails (representing the double faces of success). Ink-stained hands Hwasa decides to wear the crown, She got ink on her hands while fighting malicious comments, in fact we can see her beating her fists on the ground and shouting.
The triangular tub is back but this time we can see Maria and Hwasa looking at each other through a bloody water. A triangle is a figure linked to different trinities like mind, body & spirit; past, present & future; thought, feeling & emotion and creation, preservation and destruction. And, personally, all those fit this MV perfectly.
And now we discover Hwasa was not dead at all. Like it was all a dream, in fact she's on a coach with scissor in her hands, she is alone with her thoughts when suddenly Mamamoo members appear with big smiles. She said many times Mamamoo are her strength and she was able to face difficulties since trainee period only because they were together.
The whole lyrics are beautiful and powerful but sad at the same time. She said this is an exciting yet sad song, she likes those kind of songs because they resemble life.
With this album Hwasa became the FIRST Korean female solo artist to reach #1 on iTunes US Album chart and ranked 1st on the WORLDWIDE album chart as well. She co-wrote and co-composed 4 songs out of 6 of this album…an amazing album with powerful collaborations, a Queen like always.
