  • NOTE: Virgin Trains launched legal action after the video was made against DfT and the franchise bidding was scrapped and Virgin was awarded a temp 2 year contract.
A Very sad day for Virgin Rail and me as Virgin have lost the WCML franchise to First group who will take over on December the 9th 2012. This now means virgin trains will no longer exist because they are not planning to put in anymore franchise bids. R.I.P Virgin Trains the best TOC and always will be!

FirstGroup have been desperate for the WCML. However, if they put too much focus on the West Coast, they'll forget about GWR, and hopefully Virgin will run instead in 2020.

I'm really not sorry to see the back of Virgin Trains. Not only the uncomfortably hot train with awfully small seats, but the fact that the parent company is based in the British Virgin Islands and therefore a sizeable chunk of profit is not subject to UK tax.

  • @ageinggingernut

I'll clear this up, the CEO is an American but it is definitely a scottish (British) company. There are also lots of other British rail companies left: stagecoach group who operate trains all over Britain including east midlands trains and south west trains, go ahead group also have widespread rail services. There are loads of small companies too.

First were to lease more trains, not buy them. The banks own all of the trains via Rolling stock operating companies. The railway isn't privatised. The train operating companies bid for franchises on sections of the network. They operate the trains on behalf of HM Government, instead of British Rail. It was designed to cut the cost of running the network. The problem is that it costs the taxpayer a lot more in subsidies than British Rail ever did.

I am sick of everybody banging on about virgin and FYI Diesel trains are 100x better than electrified trains that are slow with those useless automatic doors being a train enthusiast myself I know an HST is a lot more powerful than a o quality class 390, 220,221,180, 450 or 350 and if anybody on here thinks that diesel trains are bad for the environment BUT YOU EAT MEAT YOU NEED TO CHECK YOUR PRIORITIES FIRST. ELECTRIFIED TRAINS ARE NOT PROGRESS AND I DON'T EVER WANT TO SEE THAT VILE LIVERY ON A BEAUTIFUL BR TRAIN AND I HATE THIS NEW USELESS GENERATION IF CHILDREN WERE DISCIPLINED THEY MIGHT NOT BE USELESS CHAVS I HATE HOW ABNORMAL SOCIETY IS AND THAT WHEN I RETALIATE TO SOMETHING EVERYBODY GETS ANNOYED I CANT ALWAYS BE WRONG AND IF YOU CAN TAKE CRITICISM DON'T GIVE IT AT ALL.

Although First Great Western (Now GWR) run near me & first Worcester (buses) and they are both rubbish always late running into smaller stations (such as Ashchurch for Tewkesbury and Pershore). Yes, GWR has a nice livery and interior but the thing is with companies like First, Ryanair, etc. For cheap fares, you loose timelessness (meaning trains / planes are mostly late) basically, Ee have lost Virgin's quality for cheap prices from First.
