    Great explanation DD.
    For all you beginners in the North or Northeast, from the Great Lakes and connecting waterways. Give 16"- 20" a try (hook to weight length). Adjust as necessary from there. I rarely see a need to go below 10" or above 24". Another tip... base your DS weight size on 3 things- water depth, current, and wind. For example, when I fish the Detroit River for smb, and the depth is 12 ft with a 3 mph current and the wind speed is 10 mph, I'm going to use a heavier DS weight (1/2 - 3/4oz). I do NOT base my DS weight on the bait that I'm throwing.

    I am 65 years old and when I started fishing, I didn’t have much money. I use to use rusty nuts and washers I found around Pappy’s work bench for sinkers. I used an old casting rod, tied a hook on the line, and tied a rust nut on a foot or so below the hook. I sure didn’t know I was fishing with a drop-shot rig. I saw a young angler doing the same thing during a bass derby ten or more years ago. I get a laugh every time someone talks about a new way to catch fish. I’ll tell you what; you want to save money try using rust-nuts, they work fine and you can break a ton of them off and not have to spend a dime to buy more. If you tie, a little ball swivel on above the hook and use a big flat washer as a weight it makes the worm or fluke dart all over the place as it falls. The secret is to catching fish is letting it sit still long enough for lazy inactive bass to eat it. Any good little worm will wiggle without being jerked or jiggled. When Mr. Big Head Bass comes, swimming over to check it out he makes the worm wiggle himself, and that makes him eat it. I fished in some real clear water lakes in Canada and saw both large and smallmouth bass do it.

      Drop shot is not new. I'm 64 and used to fish this way when I fished for surf perch off the rocks along the beach. I used old sparkpugs as sinkers. I tied on 6lb line to the sinkers so if I hung up on the rocks it'd break off easy without losing my bait.

    I caught a 6.5 lber on drop shot off a dock. I think it might of been on a bed. My brother-in-law caught a 6lber on one. Got it on RUclips video. I stopped fishing for 20 years. Then I slowly started to get back into it. A friend told me to watch MLF so I did. The last fishign show I watched was Bill Dance back in the '80s so MLF just blew my mind. Anyway I see Aaron Martens on MLF set a single day record drop shotting in Michigan or Minnesota perhaps. It looked so awesome. I went to Dick's and bought what I needed including braid, everything for drop shotting. The hardest part was figuring out the leader to braid knot. A few weeks later my buddy who has been fishing in tournaments his whole life asked me to go fishing on his freaking Ranger boat. I was so excited. We get to the lake, it's September and he's flipping a senko but he can't get a bite. I break out the drop shot and catch 3 include 2 2lbers in 4-5 mins. He was shocked. I'm in the back of the boat too. I've been a fan of the drop shot every since.

  • @neilandevette

    Leader length is also dependent on whether you are fishing vertically or casting the rig. If casting the dropshot you have to account for depth and distance of the cast because of the angle it creates. Longer leader is needed to achieve the desired bait height than if vertical fishing the bait.

  • @zachgingrich1736
    @zachgingrich1736 4 года назад

    Everything you said is true, but I think the main reason it puts fish in the boat is that it's a compact, natural looking presentation on light tackle. You get 10 times the bites on 6 or 8lb flouro than you would on heavier line regardless of the bait.

  • @seanmccolpin18
    @seanmccolpin18 4 года назад

    The drop shot is also super effective on suspended fish. This has quickly become my favorite method to put fish in the boat. I prefer a slightly heavier weight in current or windy conditions. I also use a 20lb braided main line with 6ft of 8 to 12lb fluorocarbon leader. The heavier weight and use of braid really helps provide more sensitivity. Dudley, you're the man! Keep it up and good luck this year!

    I always run 2 baits on my drop shot rig, usually a smaller bait on top about, a foot apart. It's a good way to determine how far off the bottom the fish want it. I've tried as many as 5 lol but that loses all sensitivity. 2 baits is perfect for me :-)

    Great vid! Im Japanese-American so i love that you mentioned the Japanese co-angler that introduced the drop-shot to the US. I'm assuming he wasn't on Tak's boat (ha!). As we know, most of the best finesse techniques and tackle come from Japan because they have such pressurized fishing conditions. If I'm fishing in rocks with an 8" or less leader I use a Tokyo rig with thin wire. Or a neko rig with a light weight which I let sink to the rocks and then I slowly hop it up and down. Drop shots seem to get hung up on the rocks quite often. I'm not arguing with you since I love your insights but I know you appreciate input from others. Thanks and keep up the good work!!!

    I throw this when I see bass stacking up along the bottom, not so much when they are suspended. I am just assuming that I will not be able to attract them down 8 or 10 feet to a drop shot.How far down do you believe that you can attract a bass to a drop shot ?

    What size rod would you recommend for drop shot fishing and is it more of an vertical fishing technique or can you also cast out and slowly drag and retrieve ?

      You can use either technique although casting it out and dragging it may work better unless you are directly over the fish. Plus casting it and dragging can act as a search bait.

    Won my clubs classic first year tourney fishing on guess what? Trump that DD. Lol My 2 cents...leader length a little longer for me when casting, not vertical dropping
