  • New York City, 1960s. In the Golden Age of advertising, everyone is selling something and nothing is what it seems.
Rachel Menken enters the first season of Mad Men as an ambitious and modern Jewish American businesswoman, looking to transform Menken’s department store into something contemporary, stylish, and innovative. She employs Sterling Cooper, an esteemed ad agency dominated by white men in designer suits, to bring her vision for Menken’s department store into fruition.
Don Draper and Roger Sterling meet with Rachel Menken for a consultation. In an attempt to make Rachel more positively-inclined towards the agency, Roger enlists the only Jew in the company, a young man from the mailroom, to attend the meeting disguised as a member of the art department. Don mistakes the man for the owner due to his assumption that it will always be a man. Rachel, looking to attract refined and wealthy customers, is disappointed by the agency's suggestions of coupons to attract housewives as well as their questioning of why she did not select a Jewish agency, to which she replies that she was under the impression that Sterling Cooper was innovative. Don, having never being spoken to by a woman like that, reacts violatively and leaves.
    - How do I put this? Have we ever hired any Jews?
    - Not on my watch.
    - That's very funny. It's not what I meant.
    - We've got an Italian. Salvatore, my art director.
    - That won't work.
    - Sorry.
    - Most of the Jewish guys work for the Jewish firms.
    - Yeah, I know. Selling Jewish products to Jewish people.
    - That's very good.
    - It's just that our 11:00 is with Menken's Department Store and I wish we had someone
    to make them feel... comfortable.
    - You want me to run down to the deli and grab somebody?
    - You missed a button.
    - You know Pete Campbell, of course, your account executive if you choose to do business with us. And this handsome fellow is Don Draper, the best creative director in New York.
    - Well, at least the building. Pleasure to meet you. Oops, sorry about that.
    - I'm Rachel Menken.
    - Oh. Uh, sorry. I was expecting...
    - You were expecting me to be a man. My father was, too.
    - And you are?
    - Why, Don, you remember David Cohen from the art department.
    - Of course! David. One of the rising stars here at Sterling Cooper.
    - Well, why don't we make ourselves comfortable? And, Miss Menken, you can tell us
    what you have in mind.
    - Wonderful.
    - That's very subtle. Isn't that your shirt?
    - Had to go all the way to the mailroom, but I found one.
    - Then, a 10% off coupon in select ladies' magazines will increase your first-time visitors.
Once we get them into the store, the rest... is kind of up to you.
    - Mr. Draper, our store is 60 years old. We share a wall with Tiffany's. Honestly, a coupon?
    - Miss Menken, coupons work. I think your father would agree with the strategy.
    - He might, but he's not here because we just had our lowest sales year ever. So I suppose what I think matters most right now.
    - It's not just research, Miss Menken. Housewives love coupons.
    - I'm not interested in housewives.
    - What kind of people do you want?
    - I want your kind of people, Mr. Draper: People who don't care about coupons, whether or not they can afford it. People who are coming to the store because it is expensive.
    - We obviously have very different ideas.
    - Yes, like the customer is always right? Gentlemen, I really thought you could do better than this. Sterling Cooper has a reputation for being innovative.
    - Miss, you are way out of line.
    - Don, please. Let's not get emotional here. There's no reason we can't talk this out.
    - Talk out what? This silly idea that people are gonna come to some store they've never been to because it's more expensive?
    - It works for Chanel.
    - Menken's is not Chanel.
    - That's a vote of confidence.
    - What Don's saying is, Chanel is a very different kind of place. It's French, it's continental, it's...
    - Not just another Jewish department store?
    - Exactly.
    - You were right, Roger. This place really runs on charm.
    - This is ridiculous.
    - Don.
    - I'm not gonna let a woman talk to me like this. This meeting is over. Good luck, Miss Menken.
    - Any way you can be as charming as I said you were?
    - Haven't you had enough of my magic for one day?
    - She's worth $3 million.
    - You're a whore

For Jews, shrimp isn't Kosher, and yet they served Rachel Menken cocktail shrimp. All the fuss they did to find a Jew in the building, and they overlooked the shrimp.

Many Jews don’t keep Kosher though, in my experience living in NYC, the only Jews I’ve learned to assume always keep it are the Hasidics and other Orthodox which Rachel’s character clearly is not. This isn’t to say other Secular Jews like her don’t keep Kosher at all, it’s just more common that those like her do not.

@@Concrete-xe5uc I would assume that Jewish culture in America drifted and grow over time. It's 70 years since what happened. Perhaps things changed

@@linhhoang1725 the dietary laws about keeping Kosher have been in the Torah since it was written specifically Leviticus 11,3 and Deuternomy 14,6. I am of the impression more Jews actually keep Kosher now than did in previous generations. Many who first came to America did not do so as a means of assimilating, the same kind who anglicized their surnames. I am of the impression more Jews keep Kosher now on the fact the Hasidic population is larger, more Kosher food businesses have started and other such factors. Point being yes I agree things change over 60 years but at the time this took place, I am of the impression Jews like Rachel did not keep Kosher as those who did appeared much more religious and in my experience those who keep Kosher now are more likely to state it outright.

I also love that this is a 1950s woman running the meeting, and Roger at I guess 2:52 has to tell Don not to get emotional.

This episode takes place in 1960, yes the 1950s feel is still in the room but at this point it’s officially the 1960s.

It definitely was not setup at this point (this is literally the pilot) but Roger did have the exact same experience with a previous client with a female head; the dog food company which got public scrutiny for using horsemeat like every other dog food company. Similar to Don, Roger also had a relationship with her.

Ha ha ... I don't know how I didn't notice this huge detail before ... but they're trying to get the business of a Jewish owned department store, so they decide it's a good idea to serve shrimp (and sit there happily gorging on it 1:38).

It's really not a good comeback by Don, Rachel is correct that people will shop at stores that are seen as expensive specifically because of that brand image. And she is correct that offering those 10% coupons will impede that viewpoint of an expensive store.
What Rachel is wrong about/overlooking is that Jewish department stores had to overcome antisemitism (even post-WW2) and it would be an uphill battle to be viewed that way. We do see later on that Menkens is able to court that success but it is ultimately with another advertising firm (which evidently is more tailored to Jewish companies by happening to be primarily Jewish).

Men who criticize women's looks are usually bald and obese. Handsome men are too secure in themselves to bother.
