It`s a dangerous show. Product placements that brainwash people into doing stupid shit. In 2019 i was in Tokyo on holliday alone, and i was sitting at the bar at the hotel wanting to socialise with people. So what did i do?. I bumed a cigarette from a guest at the hotell, and we started to talk... But the point of my story was that i hadn`t smoked a cigarette in 15 years. But what got me started was that i was watching " House of Cards", where Kevin Spacy is smoking a ciggarete with his smoking hot wife... A brilliant product placement same as in this show.
My point is that it`s easy to be seduced into thinking that smoking is cool because these fictions tells us it is cool. But reality is that it is not. It`s going to make you addicted fast and then make you feel like a loser. Not masculin and sexy as the show makes it look like.

The people putting on a show of just how much they want you to see them. The actual ceremony takes minutes, the state changes your status so they can take more of your money and then you spend all day drifting between people you barely like under necessary circumstances, everyone trying to get drunk or leave. Even funerals are better.

A note of authenticity. During the time in which this was set Old Overholt was about the only rye commonly available.
Till Prohibition and through WWII, rye was basically *the* American whiskey, except in the South, where bourbon ruled.
By the '60s bourbon had eclipsed rye, and not much rye was seen.
Old Overholt was one of the whiskies that was allowed to be made through Prohibition because it was used by the Army, among others, as medicinal spirits, available to the public by doctors' prescription.

It's one of the best cocktails ever invented because it's so 'no nonsense' it almost isn't even a cocktail. Basically high quality whiskey, slightly sweetened, with ibitters, an orange peel and ice. You can't go wrong with it.

You're right but there are a couple of explanations. The drink he makes is pretty similar to a Wisconsin Old Fashioned, and he says when he hops over the bar that he "doesnt have a lot of time" so you can assume that he is throwing together a quick cocktail with what he has (he definitely did not stir it enough either). But yea, its definitely not the standard Old Fashioned but it's a cool variant

Looks like a garbage old fashioned. The bourbon has been sitting in ice. It doesn't need more water. Muddled fruit is gross too. I want to taste the bourbon and bitters.

While it might be a bit odd the way he made it here, it's totally common for bartenders to add soda water, the difference is they usually add it over the sugar cube and bitters to help dissolve and add a touch of dilution. So not as sacrilegious as it might seem.

This clip and show is not about bartending, idiots. Let’s try and focus on the purpose here.

I was drinking Old-Fashioneds in the 90s onward before they came surging back in popularity. Went to bartending school and worked in 3 different places: night club, piano bar (quiet most nights with weekend show tunes singalongs) and an upscale restaurant. Rye is what you want but sometimes a sweeter profile suits me just fine like Makers with a splash of 7 vs club and extra bitters. Dont forget to flame the orange peel and break out the Luxardo.
