I've been watching your videos for the last few weeks, and I have to say you have changed the way I see silat. Awesome awesome job, keep it up!!
Peter Marron if you learned about Philippines' history, you will realize that many of these traditions were shared and as any separation of groups happen some revisions or improvements are made. The Indonesians and Malayans were the early ancestors of the modern day Filipinos.
That's because Kali and Silat both use a lot of similar moves Silat and Kali both utilise the most simplest of all weapons the humble stick and then both eventually branch into knife fighting Kali will usually use a knife in the standard grip where as Silat will mainly use the reverse grip both arts are just as deadly as each other honestly I wouldn't want to go up against a Silat OR a Kali Warrior
This teacher is freakin awesone .. i wish i was able go to bruni to learn this art from him.. this art is excellent & the most effective that ive seen in all the years ive been studying martial arts.

Ray Ward thank you for the feedback. The reason for the prolonged movement is that because this a seminar attended by experienced and skilled instructors. They know how to finish a fight. The aim of the seminar is to give options and follow ups beyond what is obvious by using baits, breaking structure and correct body mechanics found in silat. As clearly mentioned in the video “because its a seminar, we prolong the fight” for the sake of learning.
It is a question. Is it technique of silat which can move without take back to move after putting up a foot? There is a great person impressed by horror of the excessive movement

Sir, Very efficient and effortless action. An absolute joy just to watch. Do you have a specific program/set of training for military where we have to take into account body armour, battle belt, helmet, goggles, weapons etc.? I'm asking this because many of the vital targets are protected/covered with gear on modern soldier's ''hardware platform''. I was fortunate to participate on one of your seminars here in F-land. Thank you. All the best to you Sir!
There are two styles using karambit, first style is karambit this style for defend your self and movement kill only in critical point, and other one is kurambit style, is playing enemy so brutal and wild until your enemy ia death. As example merantau movie use karambiy style, in the raid 2 movie use kurambit style.
TheSilatiger there we go with the mma crap. Someone always wants to think that mma is the know all be all. This guy would destroy those a mma fucks you ignorant fuck.
I don't think anyone from MMA would want to fight someone wielding a kerambit with skill to use it like the guy in the video. They'll bleed in the first strike and die in the second or third. Weapon arts are meant to kill originally, not for sports.
I got a question, at approx. 1:50 why is that guy throwing a punch about 1 foot to the right of the Instructors head? Who aims for an empty space and then attacks it?
Yeah, the setup - which is really the hardest part - is generally always a given during demo's or training seminars, etc. Rarely have I personally seen an instructor actually, earnestly fight for position & then apply attack sequence.
Me encanta la técnica de jalar el cinturón o correa, desequilibras a tu oponente y te vuelves dominante en el combate cuerpo a cuerpo. Excelente vídeo, recibe un fuerte abrazo.
If your looking to take there life yes lol this is why i prefer Kung fu and Muay Thai for unarmed fighting but if you want to kill someone quick then definitely Silat or Kali

One worry I have with this art, allot of the demonstrations seem to involve an incredibly lengthy series of strikes and movements. Stuff that I would think is too complex for someone to remember, do, or plan when in the heat of a fight. Anyone have contact sparring experience with Silat able to attest to how likely it is to be able to do all of that? Is it one of those things that just after so much drilling and training, it's muscle memory and easy to flow between steps. Or is it something you have to really operate on a high cognitive level to pull off, brain power that could be better used on other elements of a fight.
when your adversary is in pain on the first hit he won't have ample time to respond because he's/she's too busy succumbing to his/her pain, so you have plenty of time to inflict greater damage to him/her while he's/she's in pain! Just execute the move in quick succession! Actually the moves in Silat are natural and dynamic, it follows the flows of your opponent body! That's I believe the BASIC PRINCIPLE of Silat!
I watched more videos on the fundamental movement and flow of Silat and can see that. It looks like majority of your time in it is spent just understanding bio mechanics and building a strong core of basic movements, so allot of these combinations are looking more and more plausible as I understand it, really cool stuff.
What kind of martial art is this exactly? Is it Silat? And if anybody knows, is it possible to learn this in Japan (Tokyo)? I appreciate any help! Thanks a lot!
Maul565 Hi I noticed that some kerambits have a more significant curve than others. From what I observed, kerambits with a more pronounced curve are used more by silat practitioners, and kerambits with a straighter "hawksbill" style blade are more in favour with FMA practioners. Am I making a sweeping generalization here?
Samuel Lim Karambit has 3 kind of form, One with more stright blade, one with `L` blade, the point of the blade point forward, and one that has an arc curve or the standard karambit. all of these 3 are used by Silat practicioners.
+Samuel Lim Hmmm... Maybe... My take on that would be kinda yes and no... Movement of a knife with a more or less in-line point is basically identical to the movement of a stick, which is what Filipino martial artists tend to have the most experience with - so that undoubtedly plays some role in the selection process. But the Filipino martial arts are highly individualized, so the selection of a blade is more a matter of personal taste and availability. Filipino stylists are taught to adapt to the characteristics of whatever potential weapon happens to be at hand, so I think the real driving force behind that phenomenon might be that it’s tough to find a properly made, high-quality karambit. The Pentjak Silat guys seem to have a better infrastructure for getting traditional blades out of Indonesia, than their Filipino counterparts do. Too, the karambit seems to be more common in Indonesia than the Philippines (its country of origin is commonly believed to be Sumatra, and it's still common in places like Java, as an agricultural tool). There are zillions of western-made "karambits" on the market , but most of those manufacturers seem to cater to western tastes; which basically means that they turn a karambit into a folding knife with a standard “hawkbill” blade and add a ring on the pommel - losing the unusual, radical angle of the traditional blade, and the double edge; as well as providing a lock that is fine for utility purposes, but is typically not engineered to withstand the rigors of combat - a lock can break or jar loose, and if it does, that very sharp blade can close on tender, unprotected fingers like a bear trap. All of that is unfortunate, because it eliminates about 50% of the karambit's technical vocabulary, and pretty much ruins it as a personal defense weapon, IMHO. They're still fine for solo training, though, so a lot of Filipino stylists make do with them. Too, a karambit is a surprisingly excellent utility knife. The radically angled blade will out-cut the finest serrated hawkbill in mediums like tough, slick nylon weedeater line and fishing net; and the ring helps keep your fingers away from the edge, helps secure the knife against being dropped - say, down a mountainside, into an ocean or a river or heavy brush, etc.; and it also allows you to use your fingers without having to put the knife down - all of which are superior utility features.
the karambit is a little knife with no other function but in martial arts fighting and they are super hard to sharpen which is the #1 thing that keeps me from using them .
peter Moron , you are wrong.Kali is not related with silat.Silat had many differet styles ada names..Filipino originated from Brunei malays and they have their styles of martial arts. South East Asia is the best martial arts.I say Maul is best trainer here .good video..

+Maul565 I don't think he meant disrespect. I think he meant he's very good for the demo. Also I'm surprised he's not twitching proving he's tough! :)
how in the world can this person survive as a training dummy. I thought he wouldn't be able to have children for 2 sec.
It's a good experience though.
Right? The only guy privy to every single one of Bela Diri's awesome techniques.
the karambit is a little knife with no other function but in martial arts fighting and they are super hard to sharpen which is the #1 thing that keeps me from using them .
Well it's definitely not made to chiffonade or julienne but you will be the Gordon Ramsay of Death
Practice practice if you need tape on blade no shame
