"How long their run was" -- the band existed for a long time but their glory years were 1974-1983, when they had the "classic lineup" of Davies, Hodgson, Helliwell, Siebenberg, and Thompson. They put out 5 studio albums and one astounding live album in that period. Hodgson left the group in 1983 and it was never the same.

Why aren't they in many people's top five? Well, I've been a long time fan of Supertramp, going back to their early albums and I mean at the time they came out. For instance, I wore out "Crisis What Crisis* back in the day ...a much underrated album. You're quite right, Biz. Catchy songs, meaningful lyrics, great instrumentation and yes, they can play. They weren't seen as a cool band ...they weren't hard or tough, they looked like geography teachers and they didn't have sex appeal, thus didn't attract a female following. Plus they didn't really fit into any particular genre. None of the aforementioned issues bothered me any, but they are issues that bother many people. For me, it's all about their music ...and it's stood the test of time, for sure.

Rockin' the Klezmer! Breakfast in America was a massive record back when it was new. I was in eighth grade. I remember that we reacted to "The Logical Song" in our social studies class. Our teacher was cool. At any rate, one of the benefits of getting old is losing track of new artists and being completely unaware of the various covers they record for better or worse.

Hi BizMatik, I suggest you look at all Supertramp's songs live. The Live in Paris concert is available on RUclips and there are several singles pulled from that concert are also available. I saw them in 1979 in Seattle. I've been following Roger Hodgson for years, since he left the band in 1983.
My favorite now is "Another Man's Woman" (Live), Rick Davies on piano and Roger Hodgson on guitar. TOO GOOD!

I think ( although I love so many of their songs too) the last time I have heard someone say that their favorite band was Supertramp was Julia Louis Dreyfus on her show New Adventures of Old Christine. The way it was written into the sitcom, her friends/family were ribbing her for liking Supertramp. This is one of those bands that was saving a lot of us from having to hear disco all the freaking time in that era.

The whole album is fire - as are their previous albums "Crisis What Crisis" and "Crime of the Century". All three albums are worth full-album reviews. The "Even in the Quietest Moments" album isn't far behind them either. On this song, I always love the use of trombone and tuba to fill out the sound and add that bass horns feel. And yup, Gym Class Heroes used the basis of this song, and their song is credited to McCoy/Hodgson/Davies :)

@@watchbizmatik The album cover is a parody of the view you might see from an airplane window seat while on approach to a New York airport. 🙂 The diner waitress is posed like the Statue of Liberty, holding a menu and a glass of orange juice in place of the statue's tablet and torch, and the New York cityscape behind it is built out of cups, saucers, silverware, condiment bottles, napkin dispensers... It was a lot more obvious back in the 70s when we bought the album on vinyl, since you got to see it as a 12"x12" piece of art rather than a postage-stamp-sized thumbnail image.
