    On a serious note: I know the person most likely meant well when they got you Razor as a gift but there is a reason they say not to get people pets as gifts, just because it works for your life doesn't mean it would work for their life. That was really responsible of you to go to a Rescue instead of just giving him to someone.

      I was thinking the same thing when he was first given the lizard. Giving pets as gifts isn’t a good idea. But I’m glad Cody took the time to buy Razor a good enclosure and whatnot and I respect him for giving him to that lizard rescue when he realized it was too much for him!

    The only way to give someone a pet as a gift, is if the person is planning on getting the pet anyway and instead of them paying for it when the time comes, you tell them you’re going to buy it for them instead as a gift. The pet itself shouldn’t be a surprise, but who is financing it could be.

    As someone who owns and loves bearded dragons, I really appreciate you taking the time to get your little guy to a rescue. HOWEVER your story should absolutely serve as a learning moment for others. I have seen so many people take on exotic animals, (either as a gift or on impulse) and they end up either having to give up their animal or they unintentionally mistreat it. Lizards, especially beardies, require really specific care. They also thrive best in homes that can give them ample socialization time and time to explore outside of their tank. They have extremely sensitive systems and can deteriorate extremely quickly if husbandry isn’t 100%. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do your research before getting any kind of pet, and PLEASE do not get people pets as gifts, especially exotic pets that require particular husbandry.

She may have actually kicked the bucket by now because I don't keep in too much touch but I remember going and feeding them crickets at the age of 7. Yeah, you really shouldn’t give pets as gifts. I don't know anyone who would want someone else to pick the specific pet for them anyway. We met like 10 dogs and saw probably 50 in their kennels at the shelter before we brought our dog home. It's selfish to make that decision for someone else

    • @dawnriddler
      @dawnriddler 2 года назад

      Or time wise. I would love to have a dog, but there are days I don't even have the time to leave the house and I couldn't do that if I had a dog. Pets require high maintenance, and also care. I had a lemming a few years ago and in the beginning I had a lot of time and would play with him daily but after a while, because I was so busy, I just ended up giving him food and water, and that was it. And he completely grew apart, he started biting me every time I tried to clean the cage. Also traveling when you have pets is a pain. You need to leave it somewhere or have someone come over. While I had that lemming, I was going somewhere in January and I had to carry him through snow to my friend's grandma in the middle of nowhere, cause that was the only place I could leave him. 🤦‍♀️

    It’s better to give your pet away to someone that is capable of giving it the care it needs rather than keeping it and potentially resenting and not wanting to take care of it or even releasing it into the wild where it cannot survive. So it’s a good thing that you knew he didn’t fit into your life and responsibly handled it! I don’t think a lot of people realize that exotic pets like lizards are VERY different in terms of care than a cat or dog for example. It’s very sweet that the person who took him in still sends you updates too.

      I had to do that with my pair of rats that I kept. They were wonderful and I loved them but they were a lot more upkeep than I was capable of at the time. I found a local couple who adore rats and had a few other pairs that they took wonderful care of, they picked up my two boys and were so excited, I'm sure they lived out the rest of their lives in luxury. Amun and Khepri, you were very good boys

  • @veryvivid

    psa: DONT BUY PEOPLE PETS AS A SURPRISE GIFT!!!
    any pet is an incredible financial burden on a person, and that person is put in such an awful position of either having to spend a shit ton of money (that they weren't planning on spending and had no time to budget for) just to START caring for this animal OR having to give the animal away (which gets harder the more "exotic" an animal is) and then explain to you why they had to give away that expensive present you gave them.
    Animals are not fun decorations for your house, they are a 24/7 commitment and money drain that lasts for that animal's (hopefully entire) lifespan. To care for an animal you have to be 100% sure that you want to spend all of that time researching how to properly look after them, cleaning up after them, taking them to the vet (again, which gets harder the more exotic an animal is), and then dealing with all of the bills by yourself, without any help for the person who saddled you with all of that responsibility in the first place. Shit like this is how animals get neglected, mistreated and abandoned, it pisses me the fuck off.
    Don't EVER buy someone a pet unless you have discussed it THOROUGHLY with them beforehand, and they give you the okay to do so. It's literally like giving someone a free baby for their birthday. Like yeah you paid to adopt the baby but now that person is fully responsible for EVERYTHING ELSE, and maybe they didn't even want to be a goddamn parent in the first place, and now they're totally lost in the weeds because you just peaced the fuck out. Asshole.

My sister decided to surprise me with a cat for christmas and while I've had cats before and knew how to take care of her, I just wasn't prepared to have another animal in the house. It took forever to find a good enough place to rehome her to. What really pissed me off though was that anytime I asked my sister if she knew anyone who was willing to take in the cat while I found a place for her, she'd say "she's not my cat so it's not my problem." 🙄

    Dude as a reptile breeder, bearded dragons are one of the most difficult reptiles to keep that are generally considered a “beginner reptile” they have a MASSIVE minimum size tank, need expensive heating and lighting that needs to be changed every six months but tend to actually burn out before then, they need hundreds of dollars a month in vegetables and live food, and everything at the grocery store comes in huge portion sizes so half the vegetables you get go bad before they even eat them. They need expensive and complicated supplements (calcium with D3, multivitamins, calcium without D3) they tend to be either picky eaters or absolute vacuums (there is no in-between,) and they shit constantly as babies and as adults they make massive shits. They are large, active lizards so they knock everything in their tank over regularly, they poop in their water, and it’s a nightmare cleaning up after them. I have many species of reptiles in my home and I have the hardest time with my beardies because I’m just constantly cleaning up after them. Good on you Cody for doing what was best for the lizard and recognizing that they weren’t the right species for you
