I'm using pugai ilai for almost 3yrs. This actually works against rats.
Recently i faced this rat issue, one of my frnd advised that park my car daily in differnet places/positions may protect.. idhu try panni pathan 100% result irukku but indha process easy illa, daily car eduthu maathi maathi vidanum.. time cnsuming ah iruku and park panna nalla place um find pannanum.. kashtam than.. just my experience im sharing.. thanks🙂

Just a point to note. Anything combustible should be avoided placing in the engine area. Like the ‘pugaillai’ you mentioned. Trying to avoid rats shouldn’t end up with your car on fire. 😊

you can use Naphthalene balls . Using mesh (which we use for house windows to avoid mosquitoes ) create diamond shape you can add 2 to 4 Naphthalene balls will be effective for more than 1 month you can remove whenever you wanted to drive and fix it back when you park the vehicle.
The vapours from naphthalene balls can catch fire. Not advisable

There are many cost effective products to prevent the pests in the engine compartment. There is a flammable risk with the naphthalene balls if it is placed near the engine compartment. Generally, advisable to keep inside the car such as glove compartment and trunk, etc
Thank you. We can also try having a cat in our home. It will safe guard to the maximum extent. Just an idea. We are saving our home with country dog and cat (they are part of our family and cost effective) to stay away from thief and rats.

I have tried using pepper mint oil dipped in cotton balls and placed inside the car or spraying the pepper mint oil mixed with water in the engine bay every week worked better.

Me too this is very effective, pure pepermint extract. Also on four tyres and inside rims. 40 to 50 drops per half litter water, spray daily hardly takes 2 mins. Routine Tyres daily, engine bay once in few days avoiding battery and electrical wires. If you have spray can or garden water pump, it takes less then minute for the routine. Additionally, idle the car for at least 5 mins if not taken out for couple of days.
Thanks for sharing very useful information. I would like to share my experience on preventing rats from our car / Motor vehicle. Yes, as you said i tried almost eveything except the spray, as i don want to kill rats. Anyway, Phenoyle is giving us a very good result, preferably Black Phenoyle (which will generally using in Hospitals) which costs Rs 65/- for 450 ml and we have to mix it with water as 1:9 and i am getting better result.

I leave my car often in India for few months and go abroad for work. I leave my bonnet open with my car parked in an open porch parking area. If security is not a problem and if the car was left in this manner, I never had a problem with rats.
Best and Cheap Remedy worked for me.. buy one or two wooden rat trap (100 rupees each) and one packet of dry fish (10 rupees).. place the trap near your front wheels.. place it every night until you get rid of them..
Hi Birla, Recently I installed rat mesh in my car. So what they do is they install stainless steel mesh into the bonnet where there is a way for a rat to enter into the AC cabin. Mainly this is to avoid rat to enter into AC duct. Its really helpful now...cost is 1500..place Bangalore..

This will prevent only from Rats entering the car cabin.. (Inside of the car) available in all the authorized show rooms..it won't prevent Rats from entering bonnet(Engine area) and bitting wirings..

One of my friend keeps a clock of small size inside the bay by tagging it, he had a good result. The sound from the clock irritate the rat and not hiding in the engine bay for too long time..

Now I am using rat trap boxes near the each front wheel . Two days once I change the trap food like tomato or coconut piece. It is effective method 80% okay. But fully closed parking space the best.

Pepermint and phenol works best. Also, try to minimize food or snack spillage inside car. Clean the food particles from inside the car as soon as possible. Also, remove any food particles around the car. Protecting tyres and under the bonnet is imp. Put rat mesh inside car bonnet.

Had used pugai ilai for a few years. Then switched it by keeping Hamam soap inside the compartment and took it out every time I drove the car. Some rats tolerate pugai ilai too. Evolution...

I too faced this issue. I tried all those stuffs u mentioned, am sure it will prevent the car but temporarily. Permanent solution is make a iron mesh and place it before the AC inlet / AC filter. Usually rats comes through this way. After implemented this iron mesh, no issues.

What about current situation
Use tobacco's which are available in packets. Just pour some water inside the packet and drop a naphthalene ball also in the packet and hang the packet in the bonnet( atleast in 2 to 3 places). This water pouring method increases the efficiency and lifetime of that tobacco leaves.

I tried tobacco, napthaleen balls, pepper, mint leaves, Repellent spray after cleaning engine bay but nothing was useful for me, Rat and mouse keep on coming inside passenger cell too after fixing Rat mess at inlet passages of the cabin. Finally I found a solution spraying Diesel it will work for a week, soak cotton balls on castor oil and put it on small plastic tray (sweet box ) 10 days once put few castor oil drops on cotton balls that will eliminate Rat. Please don't use any poison cakes if that die inside fenders or running board passage it is not feasible to remove it. For safety mouse pads (gum)also good.

There is one more simple way that I have been practicing for the past 10 years. That's you can install a light a few inches from the floor level in your parking space. And make sure you have the lights turned on at night times. Because, usually rodents are active only at night times. This has been working so well so far. It may not be practically possible on all parking spaces. But, if you have a proper parking space in your house with wall at least on one side, you can try it.

I saw a TED talk by an African boy. His cattle were hunted by lions frequently. After much thought he installed a torch on a pole to circle around the pen slowly. Amazingly it stopped the menace. In this concept nowadays they are installing blinking led lights inside the engine area and they claim it uses very minimal current.

Lot of rats near my house..Rats bitted my car wirings..luckily no major damage.. Only horn wire fully damaged..I have now kept/tied 4 to 5 - (10 Rs) Hamam Soaps inside bonnet and two soaps under the car front side.. As suggested by maruti service person.. This is little bit cost effective..as the soaps will long last.. It is been a month.. So far Good...

Regarding to keep the rate away from entering I have been using Cigars (Surutu) on both the sides but now I learnt from you where all that has to be kept and by what way it has to be done. One Kowli (Packet) we can buy and stock it. Apart from that Odomos also works to drive the rats away and every 15 days it has to be changed. I use both at the same time.

Bro, after trying most of these rat repellent treatments both organic & commercial sprays still I had the rats camping in the car's engine bay, no matter what. Like said after trying different methods, I settled on using Rat trap gluepads eventually which is most effective way to trap rats before they enter your vehicle (what you do when you find a rat trapped is up to you) and helps stop rat infestation around the car parking area once and forever. I mean this way you won't find the same rat returning back once its trapped and killed/released back into other non-residential areas. The usage of one gluepad lasts months protecting your car from rats until there's a rat/mouse trapped in it, or is exposed to rain/water/leaves/dirt/oil.
I recommend to get a big size gluepad & place it next to the front tyres from under the car( in a way it covers more area near the tyres), check once a week and replace the gluepad with new one if required. In case you find any other unintended reptiles or rodents like squirrels, garden lizard trapped you use oil to release them (note this gluepad will be useless after use of oil as it may breakdown the adhesive & make it non-sticky).

None of these options worked. Even 3m rat spray. Within two weeks of spray I have trapped 3 rats using glue pad. I keep this pad after parking inside the engine compartment and take it out before starting. It's a boring and cruel task but so far 3 rats were stuck. The best way I think it's to surround the car with mesh. There are many RUclips videos you can watch the this mesh.
