  • Hi! Welcome to my accepted portfolio video for RISD, CCA, and CalArts! I will be attending RISD for graphic design. When I was applying, I barely had people to go to for guidance with the application process, so I turned to videos like this for help! I want to give back, and help those who need it next. :) I hope that you enjoy!!
Also! I skipped a vital tip and trick. CONFIDENCE! Your art does not hold up if you aren't confident in what you're presenting. This one took me awhile to learn, but it has tremendously helped me and presenting my art in situations like this.
    Love,

Congratulations on getting accepted!! You so clearly put in the work and deserved to get that spot at RISD! Your work is both technically executed well but also crafted with so much heart and meaning, and that’s truly what makes an artist! It’s why we always reference the creative mind, over the more physical aspect of creating. Anyways, I just wanted to say, after graduating with my Bachelors in graphic design, going into it I wish I would have had the mindset that those assignments were really just there for me to enhance my abilities. It sounds self explanatory, but really while you are getting grades, the reason you are there isn’t for the grades, like you’re there because you want to explore and enhance your talents. So really just don’t let the assignment aspect suck the life and the creativity out of you, you’re going to college for you and your skills to grow, now is the time you can try new things and “mess up” it’s not a career yet, and yes grades matter but if you do the work with enough heart and that creative mind I know you’ll do great! So, I hope some of what I said can help you in the fall!! Best of luck!

Thank you! I would say that it's always better to start early so you aren't cut for time, however RISD likes to see recent work as well. Keep continuing to create pieces throughout your high school career, but def start soon! No pressure-- you got this :)

Should I have a formal tone in my portfolio? Or can I just keep it casual and colloquial? (No slang)

What if you went to a conservative christian school your whole life that was outdated by about 25 years and had no opportunities for extra curricular activities? And no clubs or anything? Can I get accepted based on my artwork alone?

I'd think you'd put your situation in the "additional information" section because colleges want to understand why. Yes, I'd think you can get accepted on your artwork alone based on what I've heard and what's logical. I mean if you're a naturally talented artist that couldn't take art classes because of how you were raised and you still have a good portfolio, that basically means that you're really good and with some classes you'd be better! I mean, even if you weren't in this situation, art schools mostly only look at your portfolio anyway. I heard, and take this with a GRAIN OF SALT BECAUSE I ONLY *HEARD* this, that art schools don't even care about your art awards because they want to judge you based on their standards and not someone else's. Again, just what I heard. I still *strongly recommend* sending your art to contests. They still want high achieving students.
However, the thing I'd be worried about is getting a letter of rec from a person who knows your art. Do you have anyone outside of school that knows? A mentor? A counselor that you could show your art to?
Edit: have you tried taking online classes?
