    ROLEX DAYTONA 6263 “BIG RED”
The Rolex Daytona. It’s an absolute icon and easily one of the most recognizable and sought-after chronographs in the world. Even if you are a novice luxury watch collector, chances are you’ve heard of the Daytona.
It was developed for the race track, featuring stopwatch functions and a Tachymeter bezel. It has since become a highly prized collector’s item among collectors of all walks of life and professions, not just racing enthusiasts and professional drivers.
In this video, we’ll give you an in-depth look at the ref. 6263, the very same model worn by famous Daytona owner Paul Newman. Many collectors consider it to be one of the most coveted vintage Daytona models. Let’s find out what makes it so exceptional.
    ROLEX 6263 FEATURES
Rolex introduced ref. 6263 in the early 1970s, producing it until 1987. It is distinguished by second-generation screw-down pushers - replacing the pump pushers used on its predecessors, improving the watch’s water resistance, and giving it a unique aesthetic.
Ref. 6263 also features a waterproof Oyster case, complete with a screw-down case back and screw-down crown, thus, the distinction “Oyster” on the dial.
The acrylic crystal and matching multi-link bracelet are just the icing on top of the vintage Rolex cake.
The hand-wound Valjoux cal. 727 movement powers this watch. However, this movement was replaced in the late 1980s with the introduction of the 5-digit generation and the outsourced Zenith El Primero automatic movement.
An older-style bezel surrounds the case with an aluminum insert and a Tachymeter scale. This is a significant departure from the typical metal bezels produced before ref. 6263 hit the market.
The most notable feature of the 6263, and what makes it so insanely collectible and fun to hunt for on the used Rolex market, is its large selection of dial variations, each of which ranges in degree of rarity and brings its own character to the collection.
Stainless steel examples were outfitted with a black, silver, or exotic dial, and gold Daytona 6263s were often given black or matching champagne dials.
THE BIG RED ROLEX 6263 DAYTONA
The topic of this episode of Vintage of the Week displays the time on a “Big Red” dial, which is characterized by either a black or silver dial, contrasting chronograph registers, and a large red Daytona logo just below the centrally-mounted hands.
Depending on the year produced, not all ref. 6263s have a red Daytona logo. In fact, some don’t even have the Daytona logo on them at all, just the distinction “Cosmograph.” The Daytona logo didn’t appear on the dial until around 1975.
Additionally, the actual font size may vary and are categorized as either “Big Red” or “Small Red” dials. From there, the actual placement of the text is also slightly different on some examples. One such example is the “Big Red Floating Dial,” which places the logo father away from the sub-dial at 6 o’clock.
HOW TO BUY THE ROLEX 6263 DAYTONA BIG RED
As a discontinued Rolex, the resale market is your only option if you wish to buy the Daytona ref. 6263. Depending on the actual watch, the price can vary dramatically. However, the Daytona 6263 tends to trade hands for at least $50k and well over $100k.
We’ve had a few examples of this watch come through our doors through the years, each 100% certified authentic and competitively priced. If you’re in the market for a vintage Daytona, shop with a reseller you can trust. Contact us at Bob’s Watches today to get started: (800) 494-3708

This series should just be called Daytona of the week. There are other watches other than Rolex. and even within Rolex there are other models than the Daytona.

I want to thank you for making this video series as it is very for good learning about vintage watch. I know your goal at Bobs is to sell these watches each week but this is also a great from an educational standpoint. My only complaint is that in the 8 episodes so far the only watches you have featured are vintage Rolex . Which is not a bad thing Rolex is my favorite brand but I would like to see some other brands and famous vintage watches featured. So ideas would be 1.Omega Pre moon watch Speedmaster , 2 Breitling Navitimer, 3 Cartier Tank, 4 Tudor Sub or Chrono , 5 Heuer Chronograph, 6 Anything vintage Patek Philippe especially a calendar watch, and maybe even a Grand Seiko or King Seiko. Thank you great video series keep the good work.
    Thanks
    William

    Paul Newman's 2nd Daytona ...
This was given to Paul by his wife, Joanne... Having a new watch, Paul decided to give his famous 6239 to James Cox..
Big Red replaced Paul Newman's Paul Newman on the wrist and thats when the great mystery began as to the 6263's whereabouts
