The ARES in wings was on one mission and was a helping tool that was timed life and only appeared twice, it's from the secret mission 'piercing the shroud'. The reason you can't customize them in coop is because they're timed life, and direct strike does mostly take the exact stuff they have in coop, besides making certain timed life stuff permanent, obviously.

How do you create control groups for non-hero units?

when the units spawn in the field, select them as theyre walking and add them to a hotkey group. sadly you cant put them in auto hotkey grouping like heroic units :(
