That Dr. Bronner’s soap is no joke. You legit can use it for anything. I use it as body wash, it’s one of the only things that actually makes me feel clean after a string of 12h shifts at the hospital as a nurse. I also use it to spot-clean my period underwear before they go in the laundry (I’m weird about the concept of period blood getting on other things in my laundry basket). I’ve used the unscented version for all my tattoos (don’t get me started about antibacterial soap). I’ve used it to clean my hairbrushes, makeup brushes, you name it. In hindsight you can probably do all these things with regular schmegular bar soap too, but I feel like Castile soap is the way to go.
Imo the best thing about Dr Bronners is that it comes in a couple scent options that are made with actual plant oils. The peppermint soap is phenomenal for mopping and laundry if you live somewhere with a lot of bugs. The tea tree soap helps with body acne at a fraction of the price of skincare stuff. Even the rose scent is just lovely in a bath.
@@sarahkinsey5434 personally I don’t use the liquid, but I have in the past. You can mix it with water since it’s a concentrate and use it as a cleaner that way! I find it busts through bathroom grime well, never have used it in the kitchen though!
"Using up what you already have is the most sustainable thing to do!" Absolutely! It's also frustrating to me to be marketed on everything I do online which normalizes buying extras to "stock up" because companies create FOMO (the Fear Of Missing Out). Your "radical" view @18:51 is something I've noticed as well. When I was younger, I never worried about how I was perceived by other people. As an adult now on social media, I feel like I've developed so many more insecurities because of the way things are marketed to a female audience in advertisements, movies, through influencers, etc. Even though I now know that some of my insecurities were artificially created by companies to create a need for their products it doesn't change the anxiety I feel about the way that I am perceived by others. Another great thing about minimalism/sustainable living is that you need to intentionally disregard advertising and really think about whether you need something before you purchase it, which fosters critical thinking and may curb these feelings of inadequacy. I feel encouraged watching your videos! 🥰
As an esthetician and low waster I AGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY. the beauty industry is horrible. They tell you you need these huge comprehensive routines when you don’t. I personally have a 2-5 step routine all depending on if it’s a bad skin day, what day of my cycle it is, if I’m too tired, etc. Really all you need is cleanser, (toner is optional but I prefer it) a serum (if you have any issues to address), moisturizer, and spf. I’ll do the occasional mask. It’s more important to get targeted products than to buy a ton of garbage. I love the brand Shine Skincare Co because they are low waster and package their products in glass, organic and naturally sourced, use actual targeted ingredients like acids and enzymes, not just herbs that a ton of brands use that frankly aren’t Good enough. You can get them through Etsy so they ship carbon neutral. Okay that’s my shpeel. Im just so sick of the beauty industry, its harmful standards, and its waste. It’s appalling from an insider perspective. It’s literal trash.
I just get overwhelmed by it all. There are so many products and I only kind of know my skin type (acne prone so probably combo-oily). Lately my nostrils have been flaking with the slightest touch, and it's not my sunscreen. I shower every other day, sometimes morning, sometimes night. Any ingredient recommendations would be amazing! I use CereVe's SA cleanser but it's getting old and i should toss it

I agree with you about bidets so much!!! Every time I have to use the restroom and I’m not home I wish there was a bidet - like at the office. I always ask people “if your hands were dirty, would you wipe them with a napkin or would you wash them with water?” Bidets all of the way 🚽🚿💦= 😊
I switched to Wild a few months ago when I saw it on sale in Holland & Barrett. Ticks all the boxes. My eldest asked for a bidet about 3 years ago. We connected it to the toilet. We love it and miss it when we are on holiday etc. Really enjoyed the video.
My fumny stories about bidets. I discovered it after living in a place with coloc who were taking their toilet paper rolls with them each time. I had to improvised with a plastic bottle as I was in my week. I liked it. Years later, I learned we could had ones (thanks to you) without touching the plumbging. I buyed a used one for my appartment one month before the toilet paper apocalyse in 2020. I loved it so much. It took a little bit for my husband to trust it. When he finally adopts it, we decided to buy one for Christmash to his parents. They were finding that gift very strange. His mother tried it and loved it instantly. His father said he disn't really love it. They now need a second one because they were figthing to used it at the same time. I found plaine products in a refill store so I grabbed some and it’s SO nice - it’s killing me to finish up shampoo bars before I use it - it’s my reward for using up what I have!
I think there's a difference between having backups/options vs hoarding though. Like obviously only have one of each thing directly in your shower but storing backups/options that you will use isn't necessarily bad.
Yeah. it saves me money buying enough units of my favorite products having enough backups to hold me down until the next sale. Nothing I’m not confident to use within the year or product shelf life
Shelby! Thank you for bringing up your sensory issues. I have ADHD (maybe Autism) and it’s a huge struggle to be sustainable while also finding products that are comfortable and not overstimulating. I feel what you said about using up your favorite things fast!
Love this! I’d love to see content around how you care for your guests or people that come to visit. You shared a little in the window-bathroom and that sparked my interest (along w the wwoofing guests, and your family bringing their own bathroom spray that you mentioned in a prior video… lol wth)! And not limited to the bathroom, but the guest room, when you have people over for a meal or party, food you make or have on hand, how you entertain, etc. Maybe there isn’t a lot to share, but if there is I’d be curious! Sometimes it feels like a lot for me to have people over, I live similarly, and I would love to get some inspo on this!
Shelby!!! You CAN put plants in your bathroom without a window- I have pothos cuttings in water and they grow from my bathroom lights! Not as prolific as my window plants but they still grow!
my bathroom doesnt have windows but it does have a skylight and i keep a plant in the shower and it stays alive (going on month 8) so the skylight is a god send
Your video from 1 year ago about consumerism has been included in the "playlist" on "my page" and a request is made of you taking a very genuine intellectually/emotionally honest journey through it, sharing it, communing with others to find the truth that lay between, and spread peace. Peace and love
I think a nice thing also about a lot of the eco alternatives is that they can be better for people with sensitivities. Personally I can't use makeup wipes because they irritate my skin.. so a towel and washing my face is a lot better for my skin and probably everyone else's too
We also added a Tushy bidet to our home! We big splurged as a gift to ourselves and did the Ace, which is incredible. The only thing I wish was different is the dry function; it’s just a little too weak for me and doesn’t do much aside from warm my bits haha. But we are a TP free home and feeling cleaner than before! A question: we currently use the Kitsch bars, and I really like them but I doubt the company is unlike the other large corps out there. Wild makes refillable shampoos and was wondering if you think they might be a better option?
This was perfect timing (for me) that you made this video! I have some bathroom products that I bought literally years ago before my sustainability enlightening that I am finally almost out of and was dreading the research of finding a sustainable alternative! Lovely video, thank you for always making such amazing content. PS- I've had a shower with a window for a year now, and I am for sure never going back!!
I’ve been wanting to find a toothpaste with less wasteful packaging but all of the ones I’ve found do not contain fluoride. So thank you, I appreciate the tip!
Such great timing! I had been using Peach as my refillable deodorant, but they don’t sell the refills anymore. Grabbed myself a starter set for Wild deodorant with a few scents to see what works for me.
I really loved this video. I'm going to be honest--finding good ways to live sustainably while being on my budget is important to me, and whenever I see videos that speak to this, I get excited to learn about new brands that I can be on the lookout for when it's time for me to replace an emptied bottle or container. And hearing more about how I can promote environmental friendliness and responsibility in my everyday life is really important to me. I found your RUclips channel a couple of years ago, but I had a really hard time watching your videos from start to finish--they seemed somehow disconnected, unfriendly, and unfairly oriented to create a divisive either/or dynamic between people who think one way (your way) and everyone else. And almost every time, I got so frustrated that I would turn off a video. But something has changed--your videos lately have been more inviting, friendlier, and more open to recognize and acknowledge that the products, approaches, etc. you are promoting are moreso YOUR way, not THE way. And that it's good for people to take a one in/one out approach or a "here's a starting point and the research I have done to encourage my shopping habits...you can do some of your own" mentality. It's been nice to feel like I *want* to watch a video from start to finish and get a glimpse into how you make your purchasing decisions and gain some points of consideration for when I need to make my next purchasing decisions.
Yes to having less! I used to have soooooo many products and half of them would just sit in the bathroom and I’d never use them. It’s nice to use everything you own and even better when it’s eco friendly and sustainable.
Hi, have you tried storing the eyepatches-mask-thingy in the fridge maybe? I'm curious if that would help... and I heard that putting colder stuff around the eyes can be beneficial? But I may be wrong though... just curious and if you answered to someone else then sorry, did not see that. Thanks for sharing 🤗
Love this. You inspire me so much. I was going to repurchase my Lush body wash but maybe I'll stick to my soap bar. I also will consider giving the shampoo brand a try. I can't recycle in my complex because they only have one giant bin and nothing else so it makes me sad that all my bottles have to go in there. Does the plaine shampoo brand recycle back their bottles?
Hi so we’ve had a bidet but haven’t installed it yet in the new house. We had a hard time with drying off after, what would you recommend that’s hygienic but also sustainable? Doesn’t make sense to dry off with the toilet paper if the purpose of the bidet is to “eliminate” it. (It also breaks apart when wet) Would love to hear your thoughts or others in the comments!
Recently got some period underwrar from you. Im not menstruating right now since im pregnant but i wanted something for postpartum bleeding since you cant use a cup for that. While i like using my cup for periods, sometimes I dont wanna wear it at night towards the end of my period. So far i've been finding them helpful for the extra discharge towards the end of pregnancy because it makes me itchy (yes my dr confirmed it was just normal pregnancy discharge and i dont have any infections going on)
Hey Shelby, great video as per usual ❤ I know this is out of your wheel house but I’m wondering how you feel about anti-perspirants and aluminum salts. Board-certified derms seem to get annoyed at people who are scared of these. I personally sweat a lot due to my medications so rubbing a perfume stick on my underarms doesn’t do it for me. So unfortunately all the great sustainable and compostable packaged deodorants never work for me :(
I think you’d be really interested in Naked Sprout (an eco toilet paper brand) I’ve been so impressed and they have made me switch from who gives a crap
appreciate this! would be interested how this category became less important to you, as you mentioned at the beginning of the video. also would be interested, if you could please consider a video on silicones in makeup/cosmetics & potential pollutant/environmental harms?
I have that same hairbrush 😅 the paint or whatever on the handle is mostly gone on mine as well. I vaguely recall the packaging saying not to get it wet due to having bamboo either in the handle or a bamboo composite in the bristle part, but never saw them again anywhere to confirm Coola is great sunscreen as well, I got a trial size with something else, but definitely a pricy option
I am most likely going to purchase one of those reusable makeup towels. How long do you use them before washing them? I have never tried them but I’m tired of spending money on those wipes for my face because I don’t even wear makeup every day. It’s literally throwing money away and I can never find ones that aren’t scratchy or don’t burn my eyes from whatever juice they put on there.
can you make a video about the trashie take back bags? they seem like a transparent company and a better option than donating, but idk if it’s greenwashing and i want to know if it’s worth the price before i support them
thank you so much!! It's a daith piercing and I've had that jewelry in for over 10 years LOL I'm not sure of the seller now but I got it on Etsy I remember that!
I just heard about Plant Paper toilet paper. I looked at their website to see if they really are eco friendly and I'm not sure. Can you please let us know about them and what you think? Thank-you!
I've looked at those bamboo toothbrush heads before, but wasn't sure how they were really any better than the plastic ones as assumed given the plastic bristles and (presumably?) Metal/plastic components inside it that makes it actually function as a electric toothbrush, it was just going to be greenwashing. Can you pull them apart effectively? If so, I've been avoiding them for no good reason!!! 😮😭🙈
Yeah, it looks like the point is to choose something that doesn’t use AS MUCH new plastic. Both of the options linked in the description use plastic for the bristles, but I guess you could at least try to break them in half and compost the non-bristle side? I might give them a try since I need to restock my brush heads anyway.
I don’t know about the brands in the US but in Germany we have a brand called hydrophil. The head inside is made out of Starch and doesn’t have a click system (which plastic ones often have). So they are a little bit harder to press on but they are 100% recyclable :) Shelby problably has similar ones
a trik i do with solid soap is to cut them in 1/2s' 1/3' , or even less - if its for the face, this way u use an in-tack chemistry of the product caus its not like the entire150 gr of soap gets wet and dries wet and dries...for travel its best.
I am always gross out by the residual on the plastic curtain liner, but don’t know how to effectively clean it. So I switched to a white polyester shower curtain without a plastic liner. So that I can clean and bleach it in the washing machine. No water spills during shower and I haven’t throw out any curtain or liner ever since (over 3 years now). If you look for affordable skincare, try Cetaphil gentle cleansing bar. For gel cleanser, La Roche Posay just released refill of the Toleriane Purifying Cleanser. I understand they are not the most reputable companies in terms of environmental practices. But they work and are affordable to a lot of people. Also, as a skincare enthusiast, I would like to preach that there’s no skincare products or ingredients worth breaking your bank! Finish the fancy bottles and say the last goodbye, and then be happy with your wallet 👍🏼
If you're looking to replace OSEA's hyaluronic serum, try out Herbivore's Cloud Jelly serum. My skin has a bizarre reaction to their sea serum, it wasn't bad enough to keep me from using the entire 88$ bottle (lol) but the cloud jelly does a good job. I'm not gonna lie, OSEA's products are always gonna be better but the cloud jelly is a good replacement. Plus, the bottle is designed to not waste the serum. I always hated the way OSEA's sea serum would gather at the bottle opening and dry out... like you could just see money being wasted lol. Herbivore's bottles have a catch to clean off the applicator so it doesn't gather around the top of the bottle. Recommend their jelly cleansers too, I've kept all my other OSEA products but replaced the sea serum and cleaners because I run through them so quickly and they're bloody pricey. You can buy BIG bottles of cleanser from Herbivore too, which I love.
21:36 Do you have any recommendations on soap bars that don't dry out your skin? I've been searching for a while now, but regular soap bars aggravate my skin. It's extremely dry as is and the soap bar that I have used don't help with my exma in winter. I also hate the sensory experience of my skin feeling extremely "tacky" when rinsing (I hope you know what I mean by that).
I use the dove beauty bars, found all the types to be basically the same. They've been my face soap for years and will sometimes use on my body - I also have dry skin and can get mild eczema
Not sure if you do company reviews anymore but I am really interested in Trashie Take Back bags. I've used them twice and love how easy it is and their efforts for sustainability but would love to know if it's just greenwashing. It's so hard to tell what to believe.
i feel really ridiculous asking, but do you not need toilet roll if using a bidet? Like surely you still need to dry yourself? Sorry if thats a stupid question :)
I would love a period care video bc that is one thing I haven't switched over to I tried a cup once and it kinda scared me and I just feel like I don't know what to do with reusable underwear after you wear them
what scared you about the cup? I know they're not for everyone but sometimes there's a bit of a learning curve, I love my cup been using the same one for years (technically 2nd one but identical cup in a different colour)
@@alexandra1415 I feel like it's def the learning curve. I just remember when I tried taking it out I felt like I couldn't find it. I think I might have to try again and just practice
Here to encourage you to use just the tret and moisturizer!! (After you finish ip your other products of course) Less is more with your face!! My wiin has nwver been better since doing that
Is there anything you use as for loofah or cloth or brush to clean your body? I don’t see anything and I was on lookout for sustainable replacement of plastic loofah
++++++infinity to bidets and your whole spiel about it. I'd recommend people to "invest" in a nicer one than Tushy if you want nicely heated seats (such a lifesaver in the winter) and warm water hitting your tush.
what about sustainable / clean make up? I have extremely sensitive skin especially around my eyes but trying to find a good company that I can trust and doesn't cost an arm and a leg is soooo hard.
Hey Shelby I was wondering what sunscreens you recommend? skin cancer runs in my family so sunscreen is a must, but I would like to use a more sustainable sunscreen even if it’s packaged in plastic. I know a while back you recommended Coola but I can’t really afford that. Do you have any cheaper but still fairly sustainable sunscreens you use?

my bathroom doesnt have windows but it does have a skylight and i keep a plant in the shower and it stays alive (going on month 8) so the skylight is a god send
13:28 I’ve done that with a moisturizer too but use a gentle cleanser first!
Would be interested to hear more about comprises/adjustments you make for your anxiety triggers when it comes to sustainable living.
I have the pink Kayaness high waisted ❤ I love theeeeeemmmm
yayyy thank you so much!! We are so dedicated to being the most comfy thing while on your cycle, glad to hear it's working out!
So glad to see Prequel! I love almost everything they make 😊 The mineral sunscreen is the only product I can't do. It pills no matter what.
I love K&S underwear! I've been using them for almost 4 months now!
OMG yay thank you so much!!!
I am so excited about this video!!! Thank you so much for your time! Love and hugs from Florida!
OMG Thank you guys for making them pink!!!
Do you find the deoderant is good for those who are allergic to baking soda? I would like to try wild. Also, I would love the period care video.
Would love to see your makeup products 🤗
Hi! Love love love your content. What's the name of your winter face lotion? I've been looking for a more sustainable heavier face lotion. Thanks!!
I’ve been wanting to find a toothpaste with less wasteful packaging but all of the ones I’ve found do not contain fluoride. So thank you, I appreciate the tip!
I love having a bidet too!
What brand of jojoba oil do you use?
I follow a fashion vlogger named Laini Ozark and she had a clip of Shelby in her last video!!
Have you heard of etee? They have refillable skincare, that comes in a concentrate that looks pretty nice
Just Bought your period underwear with the code ! So happy to support you 😊
I want a video on your plants and how you care for them ❤❤❤
Would you try the dew mighty serum bars! I see them at the sustainable shops local to me but I can't find any reviews!
Do you know if those bamboo tooth brush heads compostable? I see that a lot of the bamboo tooth brushes say to remove the bristles before composting
Lovely video ❤ always look forward to them
Hi so we’ve had a bidet but haven’t installed it yet in the new house.
Please share what Skincare brands you use?:)
Recently got some period underwrar from you. Im not menstruating right now since im pregnant but i wanted something for postpartum bleeding since you cant use a cup for that. While i like using my cup for periods, sometimes I dont wanna wear it at night towards the end of my period. So far i've been finding them helpful for the extra discharge towards the end of pregnancy because it makes me itchy (yes my dr confirmed it was just normal pregnancy discharge and i dont have any infections going on)
Hey Shelby, great video as per usual ❤
I know this is out of your wheel house but I’m wondering how you feel about anti-perspirants and aluminum salts.
I've never seen that key for toothpaste before @7:36. Since it's not plastic, it looks like it will last as long as you don't lose it! 😅
I have that same hairbrush 😅 the paint or whatever on the handle is mostly gone on mine as well. I vaguely recall the packaging saying not to get it wet due to having bamboo either in the handle or a bamboo composite in the bristle part, but never saw them again anywhere to confirm
Coola is great sunscreen as well, I got a trial size with something else, but definitely a pricy option
Thank you for this video ❤
update us on your sunblock research!;)❤
Does anyone know where Shelby found those ‘keys’ to help use up tube products?
Always love an update. ❤
I am most likely going to purchase one of those reusable makeup towels. How long do you use them before washing them? I have never tried them but I’m tired of spending money on those wipes for my face because I don’t even wear makeup every day. It’s literally throwing money away and I can never find ones that aren’t scratchy or don’t burn my eyes from whatever juice they put on there.
can you make a video about the trashie take back bags? they seem like a transparent company and a better option than donating, but idk if it’s greenwashing and i want to know if it’s worth the price before i support them
This has nothing to do with the video but where did you get the peace sign cartilage jewelery? It is so stinkin cute ❤
thank you so much!!
Thank-you!
Yess bidets
So they are a little bit harder to press on but they are 100% recyclable :) Shelby problably has similar ones
a trik i do with solid soap is to cut them in 1/2s' 1/3' , or even less - if its for the face, this way u use an in-tack chemistry of the product caus its not like the entire150 gr of soap gets wet and dries wet and dries...for travel its best.
love the video!
Thoughts on what to wear when swimming during your period?
Not sure what Shelby does, but I use period underwear most of the time and a cup when I’m swimming.
I am still hoping that someday wild will make an antiperspirant. Some of us want to be eco-friendly but still use an antiperspirant.
It should be less toilet paper than people use without bidets. Or if someone wants to use none, they could towel dry after they get clean
Do you not use a sponge or rag to wash your body in the shower? Just wondering
I need a skincare routine video
I would love a period care video bc that is one thing I haven't switched over to I tried a cup once and it kinda scared me and I just feel like I don't know what to do with reusable underwear after you wear them
she did one recently
@@piarateking8094thank you pirate king
what scared you about the cup? I know they're not for everyone but sometimes there's a bit of a learning curve, I love my cup been using the same one for years (technically 2nd one but identical cup in a different colour)
@@alexandra1415 I feel like it's def the learning curve. I just remember when I tried taking it out I felt like I couldn't find it. I think I might have to try again and just practice
Try a period disk! So much easier than a cup, same concept. I like the brand Saalt
Have you looked into fluoride and if so why do you still use it?
Yes. Because most of the negatives are pseudoscience and I have extreme dental anxiety & fluoride is essential for teeth health.
Which moisturizer is that?
Here to encourage you to use just the tret and moisturizer!! (After you finish ip your other products of course) Less is more with your face!! My wiin has nwver been better since doing that
❤❤❤❤ love these videos
TWO YEARS? I feel like you moved a couple months ago..... wow how time flies lol
Is there anything you use as for loofah or cloth or brush to clean your body? I don’t see anything and I was on lookout for sustainable replacement of plastic loofah
You know loofahs are natural right? Look for ones that are pale brown and super fiberous
It's not exactly the same thing, but I use washcloths. I have a bunch and wash in the laundry after each use
I have the same problem with things I like! I find them, they disappear. It’s very frustrating!
jojoba oil, yes!
++++++infinity to bidets and your whole spiel about it. I'd recommend people to "invest" in a nicer one than Tushy if you want nicely heated seats (such a lifesaver in the winter) and warm water hitting your tush.
I love Coola too but recently found out that its owned by SC Johnson.
what about sustainable / clean make up? I have extremely sensitive skin especially around my eyes but trying to find a good company that I can trust and doesn't cost an arm and a leg is soooo hard.
but what about how dr bronners uses palm oil?
Hey Shelby I was wondering what sunscreens you recommend? skin cancer runs in my family so sunscreen is a must, but I would like to use a more sustainable sunscreen even if it’s packaged in plastic. I know a while back you recommended Coola but I can’t really afford that. Do you have any cheaper but still fairly sustainable sunscreens you use?
