- Dr Kathryn Murphy, Associate Professor in the Faculty of English and Fellow and Tutor, Oriel College Oxford, introduces Robert Burton and his book the Anatomy of Melancholy.
Published in 1621, the Anatomy of Melancholy was a huge and innovative encyclopaedia of mental and emotional disorder, as understood in the late Renaissance. The book examines the causes and symptoms of melancholy.
Part of the Bodleian Libraries' exhibition Melancholy: A New Anatomy reflecting on ideas of mental illness and its cure in the Renaissance and the present day.
