You can feel this fight because the first time you approach its very atmospheric and there's definitely a sense of doom about this fight. During the fight, the elemental barrier changes are a good mix, and the requirement of the Masamune is a memorable set piece for it. The music was also fucking tops.
This part of the game always felt like a final boss battle, despite not even being halfway into the game! It just has such an emotionally resonant feeling, and after the long corridors and oppressing atmosphere of Magus' Keep this just hits. And I feel like the way the intro to this is constructed really conveys that well - the sound effects starting before melodies gradually pour in, and when the laugh sounds the orchestra starts to go nuts. The cover somehow sounds really fun despite the dramatic tones, and I think that's a testament to how much love was poured into this one singular cover. Then when Frog's Theme and Lavos' Theme come in later, it really adds to that feel of storytelling. There really isn't a bad moment in this cover - and that says a LOT, because there's a countless amount of Magus theme covers which utterly fail at capturing the same atmosphere and tension as the original. I can enjoy a lot of those, sure, but there's maybe only like 5 or 6 versions of this theme which capture the original tone well, and of those versions, yours is the only one to make this song retell the story of the fight so perfectly. Every moment, every blast from the horns, boom from the drums, or drone from the strings sells this as a truly perfect remaster of a nearly untouchably perfect theme. Once again, I really just have to sit back and admire the effort put into these covers. It was 4 years ago when I discovered the magical world of Chrono Trigger remixes, and it's all thanks to your masterful album. I rate this a 600/10 and give this my exclusive golden frog award.
it was intended as such. even in nintendo power magazine they published "complete walk through of chrono trigger" they had the complete strategy guide up to this fight and they even said it was the last boss in the monthly nintendo power... not the newstand one offs... my mind was completely blown once i was in zeal... i was like this is the last boss im killing him . and then everything changed.
I have lost count of how many times I've listened to this song. This rendition is just simply perfect: knows when to be soft and ominous, and it knows when to go big and orchestrated. The inclusion of Frogs theme in the middle of battle is so perfectly timed. It is, hands down, the best track within the album.
Fight against Yakra - satisfying win, fight against Magus - satisfying win , fin against Lavos - extremely satisfying. Fight againt corporate greed and Cease & desist attacks devoid of logic -> unsatisfying, Square Enix lost millions of fans, and dollars by winning against them
Let me tell you something: this is by far, the best thing i've ever heard. Thank you. As soon as I get some money, i'll certainly support your work. This is a masterpiece. Period.
I can only imagine how the fight would look if Square-Enix actually buckled down and did a complete overhaul of the game. Magus with screen-filling attacks, Frog dodging almost everything thrown his way with Masamune in hand, in full HD... So much wasted potential.
We need CHRONO BREAK. we need the end game of Schala, we need Magus/Janus to finally free his sister from time devour be it her death or resurrection, she still needs to be free.
Innocent Bystander that is the parallel universe, they free Lucca's Kid, a persona of Schala but not the actual real Schala, she is still hasnt detached from Time Devour. They close that reality from Serge to protect him, if im correct.
Magus is still whom I consider the most intimidating and awesome character in any video game. The build up begins when we hear of this legendary mage in the distant past. Then, to finally battle to get to him, and be treated to the most unique boss music of all time, was something I’ve never forgotten.
Agreed. My favorite childhood game character. Cool looking, great backstory, awesome music, easily the best presentation of a villain/anti-hero in any RPG.
Epic version of the song! Bravo!!! :-D Nice inclusion of Frog's theme there! The song also plays if you choose to fight Magus the second time, but then Frog has to fight him solo WITHOUT anyone's help. I remember getting that far and choosing to fight initially (after saving the game) to see what happens, knowing that there are things you can do with Magus later. I was able to defeat Magus with Frog and heard him saying that Cyrus was avenged. ... Not only did it not feel right, but I found out that there are Triple Techs that require Magus to be in the party. So, without much further ado, I quit and reloaded the file and chose to not fight Magus. It felt much better hearing Frog say that killing Magus would not bring Cyrus back from the dead.
Se me hace un nudo en la garganta, han pasado más de 20 años que lo jugué y no puedo olvidar lo impactante y emocionante que fue esta pelea, es increíble cómo se siente, gracias por la experiencia
*CHRONO TRIGGER HD REMAKE MAGUS FIGHT:* The whole time, Magus stands in one place, just like in the original... he feels so badass, he doesn't need to move AT ALL, Crono and co. are nothing but pests to him... *Phase 1:* (0:00-0:49 on loop) He literally THROWS his scythe and it whirls around the arena, you have to dodge it... the scythe does this for the ENTIRE fight as well, Magus himself doesn't fly over to your characters at all, YOU have to come TO HIM... on top of that, he is constantly channeling Hell Geyser, creating pools of spirits about to rise up and damage the party... periodically, this also creates ghostly adds you have to focus down, or they will overwhelm... on harder difficulties, the geyser and its effects ALSO lasts the entire fight... the scythe itself will sometimes stop spinning and begin directly attacking the player-controlled characters, which hurts more... it can be damaged to 0 HP but it will just continue to spin again afterward... *Phase 2:* (2:46-4:12 on loop) HERE are the elemental barriers... he will cast one, dealing damage to the whole group... and then periodically, he will cast single targeted spells of the same element, each inflicting different status effects based on their element (Fire will ignite, causing damage over time... Ice has a chance to freeze, halting action like Stop spells... and such)... you also literally CANNOT STAGGER HIM DURING THIS PHASE, basically you can only do damage based on the element to him, he is immune to all other elements, and physical damage is only half as effective... *Phase 3:* (0:50-2:45 on loop) The blue flames from the braziers now wave about intensely, and an eerie distortion begins to appears around the many-armed statue... THIS is where you get THE Nostalgia... after having played a softer remix for the first two phases, the theme of Magus now plays in a full-blown orchestral remix, worthy of a AAA title... he starts off with Howling Black Wind, which literally throws your entire party back to the entrance of his hallway room... you then have to run up and damage him, hoping to Stagger before he can finish casting Dark Matter, otherwise you take HUGE shadow damage... but your movement toward him is constantly slowed, so you have to use gap-closer dashes, ranged attacks, magic, and such... he will recast Howling Black Wind after every Dark Matter... that's right, the Black Wind itself literally YEETS Crono + Co. away, and is constantly literally howling at them for the rest of the fight...
@Lavos Honestly, I always thought instead of sending C&D letters, or even if (and when) Square Enix goes that route... they should just hire at least ONE of the team members behind every such cancelled project... mindless at times they may be, but at least there are SOME talented, creative individuals who still work at various HQs... I HAVE to believe that, I HAVE to look for some positivity in such situations, or I just get depressed and shit... which is why, whether it's a remake (of any kind) or a sequel, I HAVE to look forward to it...
This is a great remix. A lot of other people just change the instruments, but this is really different from the original and honestly surprised me at times :)
A Netflix original series for Chrono Trigger. I mean, Castlevania got one, and it's fuckin incredible. If they got Toriyama to touch up the character designs a tad, and have bring in the animators that did the classic DBZ, and make em flip a coin to pick between Funimation, and Ocean. It'd work in my opinion.
Tone, thats what most seems miss with this theme, however, these people got it right from the Howl The Black Wind -wish there was a bit - to overall grand sound of the track. Bonus points on the laugh at the beginning.
If you show up to fight there is always the chance that the little frog will stay his hand. Depends on your courage and conviction. I have the strengh to take it as far as is needed. And you, coward?
I swear, I imagined a remake with current graphics, this battle, cutscenes... I confess I cried a little. THIS IS A MASTERPIECE!
This is why we need to remake this game... WTF why can I FEEL THIS FIGHT ITS BEEN 22 YEARS
I clearly remember playing it in my room like it was yesterday.... *feels old*
CT is a work of art; it shouldn't be exploitated
@@SamoStudios I just finished buying half your store. Amazing work on these. :D

Oh god, please NO.
>fight your way through the Black Omen
>Magus and Frog in the party
>Fight Zeal with this playing
This describes my childhood very accurately XD
Love the inclusion of Frog's theme and the seamless transition back to Magus' theme. Would be a great track to play in a fight between Frog and Magus.
just adds to magus total domination of glenn(frog)
The throat singing, thunder, wind, chimes, and laughing in the beginning gave me goosebumps. Excellent job.
Frasier: “Oh, Niles, you know damn well their throats are just starting to warm up after two hours!”
Time? 🖐
Transference Interval of Mass and Energy.. 👌
*The Black Winds Begin To Howl Once More*
This is beyond epic. Great production and flawless mixing.
Thanks!

Amen, well said, truly epic remix of ‘Against The Wind’ 😎
it was intended as such. even in nintendo power magazine they published "complete walk through of chrono trigger" they had the complete strategy guide up to this fight and they even said it was the last boss in the monthly nintendo power... not the newstand one offs... my mind was completely blown once i was in zeal... i was like this is the last boss im killing him . and then everything changed.
Everytime I see a fan HD remake of anything chrono trigger related I cry inside a little.
This "time," rightfully so...
Chrono Trigger doesn't need a remake, why would anyone want this classic to be sullied by the soulless video game industry of today.
Blame the bourgeoisie with their visceral response to a woefully bygone era. I’m in concurrence. 🌝
You said it right. A shame I don't have the epoch and some determined friends to go back and change things.
shame all the IP's clash and they are too greedy
Modernity would ruin this game.
Thar era still exists. In the indie scene.
This is hands down the best remix I have heard. My only regret is.....it is to short.
Thank you! Alas, I had to work around the runtime limitations of what a CD can hold when making this album
@@SamoStudios CD! Who uses CD any.... *looks at my random collection of a few CDs on my shelf* Oh right.....
liked this ost for quite long already but this version doesnt simply come close, it even FAR above. insane bro
And including Frogs theme... this is amazing
By far the best version of this song in existence. Captures the epic moment completely.
God I love the inclusion of the thunder and wind. Your work never ceases to astound me. I cannot wait to see what you produce after Chrono Cinematica.
I couldn't have said it any better.
i'm a simple man. I see a video about epic video game music, I push the like button.
I have lost count of how many times I've listened to this song. This rendition is just simply perfect: knows when to be soft and ominous, and it knows when to go big and orchestrated. The day the heroes learn the truth.
" It's a terror knowing what this World is about... "🎶
Including both Lavos and Frog's themes in this song may be one the most amazingly creative things I've heard.
Like, I'm lovin' it-
Magus Cast a Spell!
Magus cast the Strongest Black Shadow Magic: Dark Matter!
Isaiah Rivera dual tech X-slash
[shing!]
Frog: I have something for you.
Magus: FFFFFFUUUUU...
Probably my favorite cover ever of this song. INCREDIBLE.
Thanks! ^_^

Period.
I don't have the proper words to truly articulate how utterly FANTASTIC your work is. Thank you for blessing us with these glorious remasters!
Yasunori Mitsuda knew his shit.
The trumpets/brass section throughout the song were just on point
I never imagined we'd settle our score in this dusty old era...
Very well then, let us end this charade!
I wish, wish, WISH Monty Oum had animated this fight. Can you goddamn IMAGINE that?
RIP mounty Oum T~T yea that would be awesome
it really would have been great. especially given Monty's favorite quote of "keep moving forward".
I was looking for this in the days future past +
Animations and music is top notch, keep it up man
I can only imagine how the fight would look if Square-Enix actually buckled down and did a complete overhaul of the game. Magus with screen-filling attacks, Frog dodging almost everything thrown his way with Masamune in hand, in full HD...

dont need remakes we need new games, turn based rpgs again
We need CHRONO BREAK.
we need the end game of Schala, we need Magus/Janus to finally free his sister from time devour be it her death or resurrection, she still needs to be free.
[@Samantha] Given how far technology has come since the SNES era, I don't think it's inaccurate for me to say we need both. ;)
HerpyDerpyDoo11 shame chrono resurrection got cancelled....

the black wind howls...
You better BELIEVE I'm buying this and putting it in my "Epic" playlist!
Oh my god you're so fucking talented! I loved the inclusion of Frog's theme!
The wind noises gave me chills. Incredible!
Can you feel it?, the black wind is howling yet again.

If you're referring to the seven playable characters of Chrono Trigger, that would also include Magus himself.
@@ryangallagher9723 Pretty sure they meant the (at the time) 7 dislikes on the video.

fantastic as always, I expected nothing less from you sam, in fact I think you're getting better with each album you make, or maybe I'm just bias
This is really brilliant but darn I really wish you made a separate song for Frog's Theme which is also a stellar track.
Thanks, and I did actually it's in the album- in fact it's the track right before this one and leads into it :)
This is so unbelievably good! Everything about it just makes perfect, especially the part with frogs theme.
Oh gosh frog's theme coming in towards the end...AWESOME!
Amazing 💯 didnt expect that . Creativity
MAGUS THE FIRST LOVE OF MY LIFE
As it should be, no one can resist the dark wind
The world will never know the most epic fight I have imagined in my mind thanks to this song
Holy, mother of god, the best of the best right here!
One of the hardest boss fight if it's your first time playing the game, one of my biggest crush!
Okay, damn, man, you sold me. I just bought the whole album and I'm listening to your take on Ayla right now. Damn.
Mammon 🤑 got "You".
Holy shit this is.... I truly didn’t believe you could take originally CT music and actually make it sound this much more amazing
Omg guys, instead of buying your caramel frapuccinos with avocado toast or whatever for just one day, buy this album instead. This is pure genius!

That's Samo for ya!
Well done. This was an excellent orchestration.
Outstanding!
still lovin it after 2020!
Hey man, do you ever thintk to make a "Magus vs Qeen Zeal" from this theme I need It!!!
Matricide...

Straight up chills. This is money.
My favorite boss fight of all time, never forget when I first played it, I legit terrified
This is amazing
battling with magus with this song! god..i cant imagine that
This is my favorite out of the entire Chrono Cinematica. That's saying a lot.
This is incredible...
Amazingly done cinematica. : )
The black bitter wind blows agains… COME, If its death you seek”
...
Sinister orchestral will always be what i crave in music
I love this track. And it's maybe my least favorite on Chrono Cinematica. Keep up the great work! Best in the biz!
Brilliant!
Reminds me of Danny Elfman's work on Sleepy Hollow - Fantastic! Good job! :-)
Magus rules all! They need to make a sequel with Magus finding Schala and them using the Sun Stone to once again raise the islands of Zeal.
If my fate is to be destroyed, I must simply laugh!
Beautiful!!
Epic
I don't care if they give us a remake or sequel. I want to see a chrono trigger anime feature film or 3.
god, magus was so badass!
This needs to be an animated series . Chrono Trigger the series

Got the blaring trumpets right. Though the rest of the "clashing" instruments seem a bit muted.
SO GOOD
Can you do the Medal of Honor Game tunes - like what you did with Star Trek?! So Cool.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh its perfect!

PLEASE do a standalone frog theme!
What a great remix
Square-Enix Should Hires you, this Album is so amazing, it's just like the remake of Chrono Trigger's Soundtracks
The black wind howls.... 10 people shall soon perish!
