I am a longtime admirer as well. Yes, his music and humor, his "legacy," will go on. We're lucky to have had him out on the stage for so long, and to have so many recordings and videos of live performances. Congratulation, Mr. Redbone, on a fine career and a unique contribution to music.
Saw him live at P.B. Scott’s in Blowing Rock, NC, when I was a senior at ASU…I met him after the show backstage, and his gloved hand shook mine very gingerly, being sure to protect those famous fingers…never removed his dark glasses or hat…a tremendous talent and an unforgettable evening with him and his tuba player.
from a time when we were rather young, and we would listen to other versions of this song(even the Isao Tomita version), we would sing along in our Bestest Leon Redbone Voice... It's so good to know, that there really IS a Leon Redbone Version...
Just saw him on Season 1 of Saturday Night (Live) from 1976. Two timeless and priceless performances. (They had so many great musical guests in the 1970s. No in ear monitors. Mostly analog instruments [not that I don't appreciate and have non- analog instruments]... so pure.) Leon was perfect for their first Season. Wry humor in his delivery. But heartfelt and true performances.
He performed this on SNL season 8 episode 15, host was Bruce Dern. My copy looks and sounds awful but allegedly NBC is rereleasing the original masters of all their episodes.
In 2010 Woody Allen wrote and directed "You will meet a tall dark stranger". It's a forgettable movie by Woody's standards. But, it is notable because LR's "When you wish..." is playing throughout and it's a perfect fit for the flick's theme.

The sweetest songs are those that come from the heart. Leon had that wonderful gift of bringing to a song the beauty that the author intended.
