The reason behind the discovery of pink as an ideal desert camo colour was originally shortly after WW2. The story is that during WW2 a plane was shot down over the Sahara and crashed more or less intact. Over the years the plane was used as a navigation marker by other aircraft flying over the region. Then it was noticed that the plane was starting to disappear with everyone thinking that the local Bedouin were taking parts for whatever reason. A desert expedition used the plane as a waypoint and when it got there it found the plane totally intact in the same condition as it had crashed. However, back then, in WW2, some planes were skinned with plywood and not aluminium and over the years the blowing sands and sand storms had attacked the surface of the plywood like a sand blaster. The sand blasting effect had stripped away the paint and top layer of some of the plywood, the glue used to glue the laminate layers of plywood was a pink colour and it was this pinkness that was hiding the aircraft from aerial detection. So the SAS experimented with pink as a desert camouflage and once conviced they used it on the Pinkie's. You are welcome.
That came out really good. Thanks for the video
+dalton vickers You're welcome :)
"The pink color was thought the best color to hide the vehicles at the most dangerous times of the day (sunrise and sunset) and help the vehicle to disappear in the hazy horizon when seen at a distance."
+jow watanabe Cool
as always another great job qdc loved the pink panther
+boltuss2006 You're welcome. Pink Panther movies are a classic.
QDC is a man of upmost class. He never asks you to like or subscribe, he just wants you to enjoy his art and encourage more to join the hobby. You will forever be one of the men I respect the most.
Brendan W he says he's not a pro but he clearly is!
During Desert Storm we acquired some paint from the Navy that appeared to be pink in color. We painted our cami nets with it and while the paint was still wet we scattered sand from the local area on it. It blended in perfectly.
you don't need subtitles, your English is great.
another great build qdc! looks great!
+iTzDeV Thanks
great kit!
+That guy you know I like it too :)
Very nice it would make a good diarama
Royal Air Force Supermarine Spitfire reconnaissance aircraft were also painted a light shade of pink for high-altitide flights over Germany in WW2. Some sources would have you believe it was the same shade of bright pink used here, but it was actually much more subtle, and fainter, but the point was that in certain skies - especially in dawn or evening skies - the Spitfires were harder to spot by an enemy that didn't really have much radar capability, and so had a better chance of sneaking in over the target without being seen.
Thank for this information. I didn't know that.
Damned now i realized i got one of them too, time too put iton a RC Crawler chassis for test.
Well done!
+Rons Lens :)
Nice job QDC 👍
+ludo florent You're welcome
Just picked this kit up after seeing you build it and hearing you tell the history of it. It's really interesting.
👍 Thanks man.
You're very welcome! I hope you enjoy your kit. 😀
I was a little skeptical in the beginning but the finished model looks quite good. Well done sir!
Thanks. If you like that, watch my latest video.

+modar You're welcome.
I always enjoy these videos, and they actually encouraged me to start building these kits again a few months back. Thanks for putting out great content!
The Pink Panther is such a classic Cartoon. and I love the Rover. Keep up the great work!!!
Great build up of a classic kit Colin! Love the music to!!
+bob ahnert :)

VERY NICELY BUILD !!!
Really cool model, and a lot of detail for the size. Good job.
Excellent mate well done, i started this a year ago, got bored with it and gave up, my kids have seen this and shamed me into finishing it this weekend
+Andy Smith Well, I hope you enjoy this kit. I like it :)
Cool nice job
+mohawksniper79 Thanks
Sweet awesome! I have one partially built, gotta finish it up now!
+Tim Bryant That's cool to know.
model is very interesting and informative!
Very cool! I discovered last year during my LRDG build while doing research, they discovered the pink added into the desert camo paint gave them better concealment at night, how cool its that. Another great build Colin take care!
+Ian E (That 1 35th Scale Show) I would never has guessed that pink would be the best color for a camo. Thanks.
As a matter of fact, there were pink spitfires! They were used for photo reconnaissance at dawn and dusk, and if flying just under the clouds, they were practically invisible.
I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing this insight here on RUclips.
Looks good. Like the history of it and the music at the end.
+Terry McDade You're welcome
+qdc748a are you from philipines? Plz answer :)
Peter Sellers was a unique and hilarious comedic actor. I remember laughing my ass off at the old Pink Panther movies as a kid
really nice work:) i might get this kit
+Colton Caldwell Cool
For a classic kit that has a lot of detail. Great job and I look forward to your next build! Peters Sellers was great as Chief Inspector Clouseau.
+Tom Zahler Thanks. I think so too.
Wow! New model! Nice ;)
Hi that was very helpful as I have only just bought that particular kit and now after watching your video I’m looking forward to doing my own build , keep posting these very helpful videos...
Thanks. My next video should be next week 😁
Great build QDC, nice to see you changing things up a bit. Oh yeah, the Peter Sellers Pink Panther movies are the greatest, if you can find them, take a look at them.
+webslinger67 I haven't seen the original Pink Panther movies in years but I can still remember some of the funnier scenes where Canto tries to attack the detective. You can see it on RUclips ruclips.net/video/OC5Ldo1DjGk/видео.html
That's a great kit. As a matter of fact I have built 4 of those and have created one really cool desert diorama with them and using camels as well. The 1/35 camels were difficult to find but they are out there. As usual my friend, another great video!
Hey good job.
+weegeeslayer123 :)
You've really brought that old kit to life Colin. Well done on the colour too. I know when I did mine I got it way too pink.
+Armour Empire Thanks. Pink is a funny color and somewhat challenging.
The British army and the regiment still call the 110 desert landrovers pinkies in honour of its 1970s
namesake even though they are sand coloured now a days. Great video!
+Nick Greaves Thanks. I never knew that.
Another great video and build
+Robert voss Thanks :)
wow! amazing details!!!!!
+Andrew Yang For an old kit, it's amazing.
Nice model. If you want more pink models you should build RAF reconnaissance Spitfire, some of them had pink camouflage.
nice job,and its truht that model is wow from tamiya wow...i whait for the next one...
tanks ...
top model making video mate.
Very nice work
Outstanding as always I really think you did really good because pink is a pretty hard and bright color so thats hard and you did it really good mindblowing work again Qdc!
Pink is a hard color to make. I based my color on this video ruclips.net/video/5KqWSFORrDg/видео.html I highly recommend you watching it. It gives you a good idea of the vehicle close up.
great work QDC
very nice build mate!
A great job qdc
The Royal Navy also experimented with a shade of pink to camouflage some ships in the Mediterranean during WW2. The colour was called Mountbatten Pink after Lord Mountbatten who had noted that under some circumstances a pinkish mauve colour was harder to spot at sea. The experiment was discontinued when the Admiralty judged there to be no great advantage to the pink overall. In fact, on occasion it could make the ship more obvious.
Interesting 😀. Thanks for sharing this with me 😊
Love your videos!
Nice build. Will be trying it myself, Look forward to your next one. Keep up the good work
+garryg69 Thanks
The movie series was naned for the rumors of "pink panther" secret opperatives.
Thank you for this information. And thank you for watching my video. 😀😀
Hello QDC, again a great video. I'm thrilled. Keep it up! Very nice model of a Pinkie. Great details and very skillful workmanship. Very good work. I think I'm gonna try a pinkie, too.
nice done
+Brabo Painter Thank you :)
Great looking build and video. I recently bought the same kit and your video will help me with my build. Thanks for all your great videos. Really enjoy your builds and videos.
+GLUESBROTHERS You're welcome. I'm glad this video helped.
Very nice, I think you have nailed the pink tone perfectly, I can't help but wonder what David Stirling would think of SAS troops in a pink vehicle 😱
+Halidon Mr Stirling would have thought this was a brilliant vehicle.
Awesome job Q ;-)
really good interesting camo
Great video keep up the good work. You should try building a Cromwell or a British tank of sorts.
+Warriorcats423 Gaming Thanks
Nice.. have always wanted to buy and build this kit.. it is on my purchase list to get at some point in the not too distant future I hope.. having seen your great looking model sure has encouraged me to get one done.. :) Thanks for showing the build, very interesting to follow, as always.. :) 8:05 Good to see you still master the traditional way off painting as well.. ;) And yes, I'm a fan of Peter Sellers and the Pink Panther movies, I have a box set of them all.. :) :)
Rob BasicModelling the Pink Panther movies were disappointing in my opinion (maybe because I'm young), but the cartoons were great
I hope you do the SAS commando jeep as well. It would compliment this model greatly.
+Murderermarv Maybe
awesome model! like always! :D
+NOOB# You are welcome :)
I just bought it today haha guess how much? £10 GBP crazy so building the new Hobbyboss jackels 1 and 2 and the new TSV coyote so why not do a Pinky next!
Seems to be missing the ground infantry radio onnthe left back pannal only has the ground to air radio in the middle so we shall have to dig one out the RFM 3D mrap spares or the spares in hobbyboss's jackels there the same used today in this it's amazing! Clansman in middle and the the Harris or bowman systems! Looks amazing nice build!
I'm thinking about making this model myself and was wonder what colors you used. And great work as usual
another great build n awesome video keep they coming bro love the music nice touch
+Gilbert Lathlin You're welcome :)
That looks like a pretty decent kit, keep on seeing this in a local hobby shop. I might have to get it now! I like your videos, you make it look easy, but maybe a bit of ambient background music would be an idea... Im sure I can hear you blinking lol
Really liked the music at the end, haha :P Great work again, QDC!
+AtomPilz Fresser You're welcome :)
Peter sellers was amazing in those films!
Thanks for uploading qdc. Your videos always inspire me :D
+FineKits You're welcome
Besonders ist natürlich die Musik am Schluß, Danke !!
I was wondering if this would be the kit that you were next building when you posted a video asking about the theme to the Pink Panther......hands down one of your best videos yet!
+Adventures in Scale Modeling You're welcome :)
For April 1st, you should build a Lego model and critique it as if it were a highly detailed 1/35th scale kit complete with airbrushing and stuff. In the same format as all of your vids.
+Kickasso Cute. I might do that.
Qdc man! Why do you seem so nervous? I know you say you are not an expert but its your hobby! You are very familiar with the subject! You know it well be relaxed and confident! You have been doing this for years man! You know your stuff! And while you might not be an expert but you are very good at what you do! You rock no matter what qdc! Good luck man! Keep the great content rolling man!
+Roberts Briņecs Psychological projection
Great build !. I was in a AH-1T Cobra Squadron. One day were told to get four Aircraft ready to get repainted at Naval Airstation Nirth Island in San Diego. They wanted to experiment with Desert camouflage. One of the Cobras Came back pink !. I did get pictures. I just cant remember where I stashed them.
+steven romero Cool. I didn't know we tried using pink too.
It was just an experiment. The other Cobras came back with the usual tan, brown, black what you would expect. The pink really threw us. It lasteed about a month. Then it went back to the standard Green. Great build though.
Great model, but can you show the paint you use and the airbrush you use as well. Also the products you use for all the weathering, such as how and what you mix for the dust, and how to paint the tracks. Thank you, great model
this is one of the first kits i ever built :)
+captainkavi :)
I love your videos can I just add reference pink , in the 2nd world war spitfires and other aircraft were painted pink ! my name is Steve and I'm using my mum's computer, I've just started modelling serious and I'm soon going to build a diorama I just want to build a little more experience to give me a little more confidence but you have learned me a lot, keep making your videos please , thank you
qdc I can tell you're kinda awkward when you're face to face with the camera, but when you're behind the camera building the model kit you change. You turn fearless and the awkwardness goes away to me it's because I think you're confident because you're an expert and you know what you're doing when you build these kits. I don't know why I said this it just came to my mind lol but I'm a long time subscriber keep doing what you're doing I like your videos a lot they're so cool
I know that you say you're not expert, but you're REALLY good at making models. I tried building a 1961 Chevrolet Impala Convertible I FAILED terribly): it was so hard. You're so good I like that you put yourself out there making these videos
+Jeffrey Vidal ?
wow, it was even molded in pink! lol....Great video and as always Great build! You always do such an amazing job painting and weathering your kits. I'm curious did you build model kits when you were a kid also? I've learned so much from your videos by the way. Keep up the great work and videos! :)
Very nice indeed
Good model @qdc748a !
+Toms' Dunde Thanks
Wish someone wou bring out the Irish armour SAS land rover with all the armour and grills over the windows n lights there so cool! Accurate armour do one in resin but resins not really my thing!
lots of vehicles in North Africa during ww2 were pink, some of the rocks are pink in some areas, the movies and cartoon came after the war.
Good job as usual QD! :) I am building Land Rover Defender Wolf WMIK from Hobby Boss (will do it in desert). I am highly reccomend it for you to build too. Very good "dry fit", ruber tires and photo etched part included! ;) QD why don't you use simple circle ruler (with a lot circles of different diameter)? it will you more accuracy in painting of wheels. And asseble a model partially so you have more convinience in painting it and than put all the parts of the model together. By doing so you will bring your skills level of modeling and model outlook to the new level! :)
+shaddyRT Thanks for the tip. I do have circle ruler but I never used it before. I'll try it on my next kit.
A wonderful looking kit. I love what you did with it. :)
What brand and shade of pink did you use, BTW?
+Roxy Katt I mixed my own paints. Sorry.
