Oct. 21, 2019 | Felix Contreras -- Something happens for me when I hear jazz mixing it up with Brazilian rhythms. In the right hands it falls into the realm of magic.
Pianist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Jovino Santos Neto certainly cast a spell over those who gathered for this joyful turn behind the Tiny Desk.
His trio rushed right out of the gate with the samba-influenced "Pantopé" that introduces the concept of the trio: seamless interaction between the musicians that make the band sound like one big, melodic rhythm machine.
"Sempre Sim" starts with percussionist Jeff Busch riffing on the traditional percussion instrument called berimbau, its ethereal sound creating the perfect intro to the dreamy melody and solo from Santos Neto on piano, while bassist Tim Carey echoes the double beat on the bass drum that drives Brazilian music.
Santos Neto says Erê represents the spirits of children in the Brazilian Umbanda tradition, which makes "festa de Erê" an appropriate title for the intensely whimsical tune that weaves in and out of the different traditional rhythms performed by all three musicians.
Jovino Santos Neto played for many years with Hermeto Pascoal, widely considered to be Brazil's greatest living musician. Pascoal can play practically anything he lays his hands on and some of that must have rubbed off on Jovino Santos Neto. You can see it when he picks up his flute mid song, then eventually plays both piano and flute at the same time.
Like the sometimes frenetic engery of the music they play, Jovino Santos Neto and his trio are perfect examples of musicians who have so much music coming from within, sometimes one instrument is just not enough.

Tiny Desk has definitely gotten bigger britches over the years, but for all the hype of the higher profile artists (like the concert posted before this one) I still prefer the showcases for jazz, classical, and off-the-beaten path artists whose musicality speaks for itself.
Good on NPR for not abandoning this mission.
Heck yeah! It's bout time we had a badass piano player shred the keys 🤘🤘💯 🎹
@@MusicRevolution1992 Check out Alfredo Rodriguez at Tiny Desk if you like piano shredders.
same
@@mateuschwarz yes dude! That's one of my favorites. That performance is flawless. Definitely legendary performance on tiny desk.
Maybe you have a music preference and it has nothing to do with Tiny Desk? Just a thought.
Eu que sou brasileiro e nunca ouvi falar desse cara, obrigado NPR ♥
veja hermeto em montreux
Idem, excelente
Meu amigo, vc nunca ouviu Hermeto? Onde vc estava escondido? Hahaha
Cria do Hermeto. Fera!
Ele tocava com Hermeto Pascoal antigamente, muito louco!
the problem with Tiny Desk videos is that I try just to listen to them, but I can't help to take a look, and when I realize I've stopped doing everything to watch these amazing musicians!
haha i hear you on that
Dear lord I’m so happy I clicked on this video.
Oh yeah! That's a greatfull design of a Brazilian musician. Disciple of Hermeto Pascoal. This legacy never die.
This is so awesome! The way Brazilian rhythms fit so organically with jazz or blues (it's all Africa!) is not new to us Brazilians, but it's always surprising to hear.
It's all Africa indeed!
That bassist looks so pleased. I love it
probs the best engineered Tiny Desk! you wouldn't think you could get such a full sound of vibrancy and expression from three maestros
I am desperately in love with this!
Não sei o que é mais difícil: chupar cana e assobiar ou tocar flauta e piano ao mesmo tempo. Que espetáculo! Jovino, Jeff e Tim são artistas de primeiríssima categoria, um deleite para os ouvidos.
It’s cool to first hear Tim Carey’s bass playing in a Tiny Desk Contest submission a few years ago and then to see him on here now.
Amo quando tem Br representando e arrasando.
Seattle represent! Seen them many times in small clubs in Seattle. So happy to see them showcased here.
Plantaseed wake up... Brazil represent 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
🇧🇷
I like the variety tiny desk showcases - from big established musicians to those lesser known artists. It shows support for all stages of musical talent. Thank you NPR for being bold enough to expand the sound and generation gap to be inclusive.
Great Music indeed ! Bits of Hermeto here and there of course which is also great! ❤️🇧🇷
Caramba, Jovino no npr, O cara é pika 😎
Skeeter on the bass!
I'm really glad I came across this video.
00:00 - Pontapé
05:45 - Sempre Sim
10:26 - Festa de Erê
Wow. They were really cooking at the start and then the last one was gorgeous.
Tight!!!! One of the very best I've seen and I've gone back to 2010 -still got a ways to go...Bob Beilen saved my life. Over and over again.
What an excellent group!! If this is modern jazz, I'm all for it. I have never seen the flute and piano played at the same time. Thanks so much for hosting this group.
I love the expressions they make. you truly tell they're passionate about music
What wonderful music, and to hear it again brings back fantastic memories of playing it in Tampa and Denver with you (Jovino), Chuck, Mark, and Jeff. Felicidades!
Wow.. I never do jazz. I don't get it. But I give at least 1 minute of my time to watch all your artists, and this comes up and I love it.. Three huge talents come together to make happy feeling music, I am smiling all over.. Thank you :0)
The first song is a baião, they have jazz influence, but its a brazillian rythm.
I'd love to take lessons from Jovino. I bet he's an absolutely amazing teacher!
He teaches at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle! And I think he sometimes teaches private lessons too.
There is a workshop from Jovino somewhere here on RUclips from Berkley. Happy studying!
What a great performance... I couldnt help but notice the perfectly placed jar jar binks though... well played NPR
I am a jazz fan , but I hadn't known this trio.
So amazing , fantastic !
Wow! They are all so great! That drummer...whoah 😅
Listening they;re playing is my today’s highlight of the day. Thank you x
Ah, Brasil... 💛
not quite yet, but we hope someday :)
Wow that is a superb sounding upright piano it sounds like a mid size grand piano. Needless to say the trio is excellent.
NPR sound engineers are demi gods, that's the only explanation
For a bit there it even sounded like a melodica...
Youd be suprised what a room full of books does for the sound of an upright
Let's hear it for the piano technicians that really make pianos play and sound amazing :)
Love NPR ITS LIKE IM GETTING MY OWN PERSONAL CONCERT
Eu que sou brasileiro e nunca ouvi falar desse cara, obrigado NPR (2)

Immediate pleasure to hear a wonderful trio embarqued for a groovy number played with happiness and great musicianship NPR is The best channel for discovering wonderful artists
Man,they are awesome!!
What a pride and great pleasure to see such a talented countryman, congratulations!
It's cool to think about the different roles these musicians take on at different times in the pieces. Like in the first song, when the pianist picks up the melodica he's now only playing a single line melody, so the bassist starts playing all this chordal tapping stuff to fill out the soundscape, then switches back to conventional bass as soon as the piano returns to take over that role.
While people put sheet music, he puts a flute. And that's a master of its own rights.
wish i could find these versions of these songs on spotify they are incredile!!
Awesome. This music really made my day. Thank you.
