How I Almost Went to Prison for Running a Moving Business

  • Would you ever think that you could go to prison for running a moving business? Neither did I, but it was a reality that I was recently faced with. I want to share with you the story of how I almost went to prison for running my moving business.
    After 10 years of owning and operating multiple nationwide local and long distance moving and storage companies, I decided to open a moving broker division. At the time I already had a call center set up to handle the sales for all my locations. I sold my long distance fleet and started brokering out my interstate shipments.
    Running a broker business had a whole new set of challenges that were completely different than running my own long distance moves with my own trucks. It took about a year to get new processes and standard operating procedures ironed out for the brokerage business.
    Then one day I received a call from my office manager telling me that the FBI was at my office with a search warrant. That was the day I learned about an active investigation on my company that went on for four years. In the video on this page, I explain exactly how everything happened and what the outcome was. Make sure to watch the video.
    There is currently an active federal investigation happening on moving companies called “Operation Boxed Up”.

    ABOUT LOUIS
    ………………….
    I’m Louis Massaro, author of 10 Rules of a Profitable Moving Company and founder of Moving Mastery, a mentoring, coaching, and education company dedicated to helping entrepreneurs in the moving industry increase profits by implementing proven strategies in marketing, sales, and operations.
    I help entrepreneurs and business owners unlock their company’s full potential so that they can not only make more money but live a more balanced, fun and fulfilling life.
    When I opened my first moving company in 2000, I was a 19-year-old kid that started by placing an ad in the yellow pages and renting a couple of trucks. At first, my office was the parking lot of the truck rental yard where I dispatched the crews out of my car. I was struggling to operate on a shoestring budget and maxed out credit cards. It was not a professional set up. When drivers and helpers came for an interview they thought it was a joke.
    Although it wasn’t an easy start, every obstacle and setback were opportunities to learn. It took me a few years of making a ton of mistakes and constantly saying to myself “there’s got to be a better way to do this” before I really developed a solid process and system.
    I finally mastered a system for running a very profitable moving & storage company, while also discovering how to have balance in my life and not work crazy hours. I took that system and started opening up several offices in cities throughout the US where we sold over $20 Million per year in moves.
    I’ve also taught and continue to teach my system to others. My students have gone on to build their own multi-million dollar moving companies. They continue to thrive and profit while they are able to spend more time with family and doing the things they love in life.
    I’m blessed to have had some tremendous success in the moving industry, building a nationwide company from scratch that provided a great service to tens of thousands customers each year. After 16 years in business, I’m fortunate to be able to have sold my companies and enjoy the fruits of my labor.
    Unfortunately, I’ve also experienced some major setbacks due to my poor decision to open a moving broker division for a brief period of time. I hope to be able to use my experience of becoming a moving broker, and the legal trouble that it caused me to help companies make wiser choices when it comes to outsourcing moves.
    I’m passionate about helping entrepreneurs avoid unnecessary struggles and stresses while becoming more profitable in their business and happier in their lives! I hope that the free information on this site provides you with great value and look forward to meeting you some day.

    This is why we stay small and local, things can still happen though.. but, it’s a little more manageable and we think the public like to deal with one person and know that when they call, they’ll actually speak to the person ‘in charge’. Yup, a lot of responsibility doing business. I do appreciate all your tips and that you’re sharing your experience! Thank you!

    My mother was robbed by brokers, she was reassured that they were her movers, in fact they were brokers or in transition. It's a MESS, they have changed their name and are gone but somehow the credit card company talked to them during dispute. These things are a nightmare, when you take people's entire lives into a truck you need to pay attention to what you are doing

      @@LouisMassaro Thank you for that. My poor mom, robbed of 3200.00 by United Relocation aka Silver Star Moving Group. No on site estimate, just spying her Scottsdale condo on Zillow when they increased her "deposit" which was really a broker fee. Then they changed their business name and blocked her calls!!! I have a stack thick as a bible of complaints for them. By the time I chew these bastards up they will be sitting in prison

    So... they were "defrauded" simply because you didn't tell them that you were just a broker?

    • @LouisMassaro
      @LouisMassaro  6 лет назад +4

      And also because their price was increased by the carrier (not my company) when they showed up to perform the move. But yes, a broker must disclose to the customer they are a broker. At the time, we were a broker AND a mover as well. So there were pictures of our trucks on our site for our local moves which created confusion for the customers. We corrected the issue by creating a new website for our broker business, but it was too late. I'll shoot a video and put it up in the next few weeks with a more detailed explanation. I'll call it "Is brokering moves illegal?"

      Louis Massaro hey im 20 years old, im about to get a truck and equipment soon. Im interested in starting a business (very small) i have the physical capability to lift, the cooperation that I would need to make certain moves happen. And i also have the business marketing and bossing capabilities. However I've never worked for a moving company and i dont know what is entailed. Such as do you charge to pack things for people? Or do you just transport things from one place to the next?

    • @kyletobin7160
      @kyletobin7160 6 лет назад

      So my question is what would you suggest me to do to gain the experience? Find a moving company and work for them? Or take on some jobs and learn through experience?

    • @LouisMassaro
      @LouisMassaro  6 лет назад +1

      Here are two options... go work for a moving company and get an understanding of how things work. Even if it is for a few months it will help you understand the fundamentals. OR hire two experienced movers to work for you and have them train you on how to move furniture. Then you can call moving companies in your area to see how they are charging for different services. After that, you just have to know that you are going to make mistakes along the way. That's ok, just make sure you learn each time by asking yourself "how can I prevent that from happening again?" or "how can we this better?" I started my first moving company at your age, just take it one step at a time. If you need help feel free to email me louis@louismassaro.com. I wish you much success!
